Doctor Who: the companion "should be female", says Moffat

Rob Leane Nov 17, 2016

Steven Moffat has been chatting about Doctor Who companions, saying it would be "damaging" to lose the female companion viewpoint...

Steven Moffat wrote the first script to feature John Barrowman's Captain Jack, and he provided a wonderful arc for Arthur Darvill's Rory, but, notably, he's never based an entire series of Doctor Who around a male main companion.

In issue 506 of Doctor Who Magazine (on shelves now, folks!), a reader asked the Moff, "do you think a young female companion is always the best choice for the Doctor’s best friend?"

Here's what the incumbent Who showrunner said in response:

TV’s Strong Female Leads Gain Ground With Women Running Shows on Both Sides of the Atlantic

17 October 2016 9:00 AM, PDT | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Scripted shows featuring strong female leads have never been more prominent in TV schedules on both sides of the Atlantic.

The trend is evident in such acclaimed serials as “Girls,” “Unreal,” and “Transparent” in the U.S. Meanwhile in the U.K., period pieces “Call the Midwife” and “Victoria,” Blighty’s biggest new drama this fall, have put women to the fore in two different centuries.

The fashion for female leads is just as clear in comedy. A show as radical as “Fleabag” suggests what is creatively possible on internet services that don’t have to please advertisers; “Fleabag” is seen on Amazon in the U.S. and BBC3 in the U.K.

Fleabag,” created by its star, buzzy newcomer Phoebe Waller-Bridge, began as a fringe production on stage at the Edinburgh Festival. The show’s roots can also be traced to such raunchy groundbreakers as “Sex and the City,” “Girls »

'Some things are best left in the imagination' says Jenna Coleman on 'Doctor Who' spinoff

14 October 2016 1:04 PM, PDT | Hitfix | See recent Hitfix news »

While the Doctor Who spinoff Class is ready to debut there's another story fans are hoping the BBC will explore - the adventures of Clara and Ashildr. But will it ever see the light of day? Past companion Jenna Coleman has some thoughts. Doctor Who introduced us to Maisie Williams's Ashildr in Season 9's "The Girl Who Died." What appeared to be a cool, Viking story with an awesome guest-star turned into a lot more. Ashildr went on to become immortal due to the Doctor's interference, eventually leading many lives and calling herself Me. Coleman and William's character arcs came to an "end" it the episode "Hell Bent," but the door for both their stories continuing was left wide open. The Radio Times got to speak with Coleman recently and asked her what the odds were of a spinoff. She mentioned she'd been asked that question "a lot." “Yeah, »

Modern tribes: the period drama pedant

The Lord Melbourne thing, I’ve checked, he looked literally nothing like Rufus Sewell, he was fat, he had grey hair, he wasn’t a global sex symbol

They go on about accuracy, but if they want it to be accurate, why cast someone who looks literally nothing like Victoria? Ok Jenna Coleman is short, but have you seen the portraits, Victoria was hideous, podgy, bulging eyes and this rabbity little mouth – that’s what people want to see – and they’ve had to put her in blue contact lenses? When contact lenses weren’t even invented. They’d have been blue spectacles.

Mind you her eyebrows are worse, the Victorians wouldn’t have had threading, and the Lord Melbourne thing, I’ve checked, he looked literally nothing like Rufus Sewell, he was fat, he had grey hair, he wasn’t a global sex symbol, I think they invented the »

‘Doctor Who’ Christmas Special Sneak Peek Reveals First Look At Justin Chatwin’s New Hero — Watch

For fans of “Doctor Who,” this year’s annual Christmas Special is poised to be very special one indeed, as the beloved BBC America series hasn’t aired a new episode since last year‘s Christmas Special. This year’s holiday ep will hopefully be a more cheerful entry, too, as the 2015 edition of the annual special was all about Peter Capaldi’s The Doctor mourning the death of his companion Clara (Jenna Coleman), not a very perky theme for a generally fun ep.

Victoria had blue eyes – and spoke German | Letters

30 September 2016 10:47 AM, PDT | The Guardian - TV News | See recent The Guardian - TV News news »

The producer of ITV’s rather Mills & Boon drama, Victoria, was so particular about historical accuracy that the actress had to wear blue contact lenses and staff were tormented with post-production digital corrections (How producer’s eye for detail cost Victoria, 27 September).

Ignoring the fact that Jenna Coleman is also ridiculously pretty to portray Victoria, what about her accent and the language spoken in court? Of German heritage, Victoria was brought up by a German nanny, speaking only German until age three. German was also said to be the preferred language in court. But perhaps the blended European royal family makes less good TV in the Brexit era?

Actor Jenna Coleman tried lots of contact lenses to turn her brown eyes blue, says Damien Timmer, but none worked

As the executive producer of not one but two current hit period dramas, Damien Timmer knows the importance of being historically accurate, down to the tiniest detail.

The man behind the Sunday night dramas Victoria and Poldark has now revealed quite how important – including spending three weeks and “a lot of money” getting the coloured contact lenses of the young queen exactly right.

Victoria: ITV renews for series 2

Rob Leane Sep 23, 2016

Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes will return for a second series of Victoria on ITV...

ITV has opted to renew their monarch-based drama Victoria for a second series. Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes are both lined up to return, as is the show's writing team consisted of Daisy Goodwin, Damien Timmer and Kate McKerrell.

The first run of the crown-stuffed series earned both critical plaudits and high ratings, making ITV's decision what Kevin Bacon would term a 'no brainer'. In fact, as the official press bumf tells us, Victoria series 1 achieved an average of "7.7 million viewers and [a] 29.7% share of viewing, based on consolidated overnights", making it "the top rated ITV drama of the year so far."

Daisy Goodwin released this statement, teasing a little of what to expect from series 2:

“Even though she reigned in the 19th Century, Victoria is a heroine for our times. In »

Mindy Newell: On Star Trek And Other Thoughts of Space & Time

5 September 2016 10:00 AM, PDT | Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news »

As my fellow opiners Ed Catto and John Ostrander have, uh, well, opined on these pages, this year marks the 50th anniversary of Star Trek. You would think that there would be a lot more hoopla about it, but even though CBS has announced the premiere of a new St show and even though, as Ed reminds us, the United States Post Office is issuing a special commemorative stamp – which I am absolutely positively buying – it’s been amazingly quiet on the P.R. front, especially when you consider that the franchise is legendary not only here, but around this world.

Consider, if you will, the build-up to the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who in 2013. Not only was there a reminder of the looming date on BBCAmerica seemingly every single commercial break, but any little bit of news – rumors – was all over the Internet, on television, on radio, and in the newspapers. »
