Box Office: ‘The Dark Tower’ Looms Over $19 Million Opening, ‘Kidnap’ Lost

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Dark Tower” should have had no problem easily winning its opening weekend due to its name recognition, star power, and next-to-zero competition from the other major studios. However, a box office win for the Stephen King adaptation is proving more difficult than imagined, as “Dunkirk” could potentially upset the sci-fi epic for its third straight No. 1 spot.

Sony and Mrc’s ambitious actioner starring Matthew McConaughey, Idris Elba, and newcomer Tom Taylor took in $7.8 million from 3,451 locations on Friday, including Thursday night previews. That number will translate to an unimpressive $19 million opening off a $60 million budget by weekend’s end. “Dark Tower” had been plagued by reshoots, which in turn brought along loads of negative reviews — it currently has an 18 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Whoopi Goldberg to Return for ‘The View’ Season 21 (Exclusive)

22 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Whoopi Goldberg is ready to ring in her 10th anniversary at “The View.” The Oscar-winning actress will return as the moderator for the show’s 21st season this fall, Variety has learned.

Her contract renewal is an important one for ABC, as Goldberg has been the glue that’s kept “The View” together since creator Barbara Walters retired in 2014.

By focusing on political stories under Trump’s presidency, ratings for “The View” this season are at its highest in three years. The show averaged 2.6 million viewers last week, beating “The Talk,” which tends to veer away from politics in favor of pop culture. And “The View” has landed big guests over the last year, such as Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice.

A spokesperson for ABC declined to comment.

Locarno: 6 Things Many Up-and-Coming Producers Around the World Have in Common

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Locarno, Switzerland — The producers hail from far-flung places such as Tel Aviv, Santiago de Chile, Warsaw, Rome, Mexico City and Sao Paulo. But, however disparate their origins, in film industry terms, increasingly, young production companies from Latin America, Europe and the Middle East speak very much the same language.

That much is clear at Locarno’s 3rd Match Me!, the festival’s backbone networking initiative which hosting 19 producers from often young production houses in Brazil, Chile, Israel, Italy, Mexico and Poland, all with “some international experience and interesting line-ups in development,” said Match Me! project manager Markus Duffner.

Since Friday, they have plunged into tailor-made one-to-one meetings with potential co-producers, funds heads, distributors or sales agents at Locarno, talking up their production slates, and engaging in lengthy conversations about their company ambitions which would simply be impossible at far more-pressured events such as Cannes.

“What links Match Me! participants is their vision,” said Duffner. »

In a perfect worldThe Dark Tower would exist as the beginning of a well-deserved blockbuster run for Idris Elba. Elba plays the gruffly heroic Roland Deschain in the Nikolaj Arcel film, adapted from the series of novels by Stephen King. Roland is the last in the line of Gunslingers, making him an expert with any kind of gun, and Elba is more than able to communicate this kind of weighty power with few words. The good news about The Dark Tower is that Elba is the best thing in the film. The bad news about The Dark Tower is that Elba is the only good thing in »

Should White Filmmakers Be Telling the Story of ‘Detroit’?

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Do white filmmakers have the right to make a movie like “Detroit”? The moral right, that is? Set during the Detroit riots of 1967, the movie tells an essential true story about the brutalization of African-Americans. The fact that the issue of the filmmakers’ race is out there at all — and will be even more so now that the critically acclaimed drama has finally opened wide — tells you how far we’ve travelled as a society from just a few years ago: toward a heightened sensitivity about who controls the levers of expression in America, and toward rigorous new codes of conduct built around issues of race, gender, and sexual identity.

The reason I ask whether white filmmakers have the right is that if we’re going to discuss the topic at all, we shouldn’t kid ourselves: The flavor of absolutism is in the air. The fact that some have questioned whether Kathryn Bigelow, the »
