14 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

A “Mad Men” reunion of sorts is in the works at Amazon.

Christina Hendricks and John Slattery will reunite with “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner as cast members of Weiner’s upcoming Amazon anthology series “The Romanoffs,” Variety has learned.

The new series will consist of eight hourlong episodes, each of which will tell a standalone story with no recurring plot elements or actors. Each episode will tell the stories of people in contemporary times who believe they are descendants of the imperial family that ruled Russia from 1613 until the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917. In addition to Hendricks and Slattery, the series has also cast Academy Award nominee Isabelle Huppert, “Boardwalk Empire” alum Jack Huston, “Togetherness” alum Amanda Peet, and Golden Globe nominee Marthe Keller.

The castings of Slattery and Hendricks come just over 10 years after the series premiere of “Mad Men,” which launched on AMC on July 19, 2007. The series would go on to garner 116 Emmy nominations »

Whoopi Goldberg to Return for ‘The View’ Season 21 (Exclusive)

14 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Whoopi Goldberg is ready to ring in her 10th anniversary at “The View.” The Oscar-winning actress will return as the moderator for the show’s 21st season this fall, Variety has learned.

Her contract renewal is an important one for ABC, as Goldberg has been the glue that’s kept “The View” together since creator Barbara Walters retired in 2014.

By focusing on political stories under Trump’s presidency, ratings for “The View” this season are at its highest in three years. The show averaged 2.6 million viewers last week, beating “The Talk,” which tends to veer away from politics in favor of pop culture. And “The View” has landed big guests over the last year, such as Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and former secretary of state Condoleezza Rice.

A spokesperson for ABC declined to comment.

This Sunday’s episode of “Game of Thrones” has been stolen and posted on the internet — but the leak isn’t related to the massive hack of HBO’s systems disclosed earlier this week.

Links to the fourth episode of “Game of Thrones” season 7, set to premiere Aug. 6 on HBO, appeared on a discussion board on Reddit, as first reported by the Verge. The pirated copy of the episode, titled “The Spoils of War,” was available via Google Drive, according to the report.

Shortly after the link to the “Game of Thrones” episode was posted on Reddit at 8:12 Am Et Friday, the post was updated with this message. “The file has been taken down for violating GoogleDrive’s [terms of service]. You can no longer view it.” However, according to reports, the episode has since begun circulating on torrent-based file-sharing piracy sites including the Pirate Bay.

20 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The Dark Tower” shot to $1.8 million at 2,770 North American locations on Thursday night.

Sony and MRC’s adaptation is projected to win the weekend with about $20 million to $25 million at 3,449 locations. The studio is being slightly more conservative with a $19 million forecast for the action fantasy, based on Stephen King’s series of eight novels.

The Thursday night previews started at 7:19 p.m.,  in keeping with King’s use of the time “19:19” and the number 19  in his works. The $1.8 million total is equivalent to Paramount’s “Ghost in the Shell,” which opened with $18.7 million on the March 31-April 2 weekend.

The Dark Tower,” which cost $60 million to make, stars Idris Elba as the Gunslinger — a sort of supernatural law enforcement officer protecting the Dark Tower. Matthew McConaughey portrays the Man in Black, who’s on a mission of total destruction.

Film Review: ‘Brave New Jersey’

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Long before Trump coined the term “fake news,” there was Orson Welles’ legendary 1938 radio dramatization of H.G. Wells’ “The War of the Worlds,” which convinced thousands (if not millions) of listeners they were hearing actual news bulletins about a Martian invasion. Several books and films (most notably, “The Night That Panicked America,” Joseph Sargent’s terrific 1975 TV movie, and “War of the Worlds,” Cathleen O’Connell’s shrewdly constructed 2013 PBS documentary) have emphasized the infectious terror that the broadcast inadvertently sparked among gullible folks who tuned in late and missed the introduction that clearly identified it as a presentation of Welles’ “Mercury Theatre on the Air.” But in the world according to “Brave New Jersey,” Jody Lambert’s uneven but ultimately winning comedy about small-town channel surfers who missed the intro and assumed the worst on the evening of Oct. 30, 1938, a little bit of terror might not be such a bad thing.

Al Gore and Bill Maher Talk Climate Change and ‘Losing Florida’ – in Both Senses

Voters who lived through it might still be bitter, but as it turns out former Vice President and Presidential candidate Al Gore has a pretty good sense of humor about losing the 2000 election despite capturing the majority of the popular vote. And 17 years later, he’s even willing to note that he (probably) won in the state that decided the election when its recount was halted by the United States Supreme Court. A cautiously optimistic Gore appeared as the top of the show guest on tonight’s episode of “Real Time With Bill Maher,” the first after the show took. »

Yes, Jeff Sessions Can Jail Reporters

8 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

When Attorney General Jeff Sessions proclaimed that he might jail reporters who refuse to divulge their sources, it was no empty threat: A 1972 Supreme Court decision backs him up. The court ruled in Branzberg v. Hayes that reporters are just like anyone else when subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury, and the First Amendment gives them no special rights to refuse. That’s why New York Times reporter Judith Miller was jailed during President George W. Bush’s administration. Fox NewsEric Bolling sent pictures of male genitalia to at least three female colleagues, according the Huffington Post. The website cited 14 unnamed sources in its report, including the women who allegedly received the lewd text messages.

Fox News has been besieged by accusations of misconduct at the highest level since last year, when top executive Roger Ailes was forced to resign amid multiple sexual harassment claims. Primetime host Bill O’Reilly stepped down earlier this year as advertisers mounted a boycott of the network over sexual harassment claims against him. Bill Shine, who rose to the position of co-president of the network after Ailes’ departure, stepped down in May. Fox News is currently fighting multiple lawsuits alleging racial and sexual harassment at the 21st Century Fox-owned cable news channel.
