Villordsutch reviews Doctor Who Series 10 Episode 8: The Lie of the Land

Directed by: Wayne Yip

Written by: Toby Whithouse

Missy – “Awkward”

At the close of The Pyramid at the End of the World, Bill made the ultimate decision to save the Doctor by giving consent to the Zombie Monks, who were residing within a “new” ancient Pyramid.  What consent grants the Monks, or what it will bring to the people of Earth is unknown, but here in part three of this Doctor Who invasion story, The Lie of the Land, we will soon find out.

Written by Toby Whithouse (Being Human), The Lie of the Land begins with us already six months into the occupation of the planet Earth, though this isn’t how the residents of the planet see it.  Numerous statues across the globe honour the robed saviours of the planet, who have been with us humans »

Doctor Who series 10 episode 8 sees the world in deep trouble. Here's our The Lie Of The Land spoiler-free review...

10.8 The Lie Of The Land

Lots going on here, in an episode of Doctor Who that does, as expected, ramp up the threat of the meddling Monks we’ve seen over the past two weeks. At the end of The Pyramid At The End Of The World last time, we saw Bill giving consent to the Monks to invade the Earth. It would be correct to assume we quickly see the consequences of that as The Lie Of The Land takes up the story, and we see what happens when that permission is given to take over. No spoilers here, of course, save for the fact that there are global consequences that reach far beyond the quarries of Wales.

The story this time comes from the pen of Toby Whithouse, »

Updated: Per Zosia Mamet’s team, the actress is no longer attached to this project due to scheduling conflicts. Our original story has been updated to reflect this new information.

The Robert Mapplethorpe biopic “Mapplethorpe” starring Matt Smith is heading into production in July, according to Interloper Films. An intimate portrait of one of the most controversial photographers in American history, the film stars Smith as Mapplethorpe.

Documentary filmmaker Ondi Timoner will direct the film, which she co-wrote with Bruce Goodrich. The movie follows Mapplethorpe from his rise to fame in the 1970s to his untimely death in 1989 due to complications from AIDS. Boston Diva Productions will produce alongside Timoner’s Interloper Films.

‘Doctor Who 10×07: The Pyramid at the End of the World’ Review

29 May 2017 6:01 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

Last week’s Doctor Who set up a new big bad for season 10, but left The Doctor knowing that they would be coming to Earth soon. In this week’s episode, the sudden appearance of a pyramid made it clear that they had arrived, and were ready to put their plans into action.

When a 5,000-year-old pyramid suddenly appears on earth, The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) is called on to deal with it. When the occupiers of the pyramid turn out to the be monks from who have simulated how to take over Earth, can the The Doctor stop them?

I’ll admit I was worried about this episode, as I didn’t see how it could follow on from last week’s impressive set-up. Thankfully, what we have with The Pyramid at the End of the World is a Doctor Who episode that is anything but formulaic and dull.

Five Things You Didn’t Know About Pearl Mackie

Often, it is the introduction of a new film or show that addresses problems like under-representation of visible minorities or LGBT individuals. Sometimes, however, long-running productions are able to adapt and become increasingly inclusive. Such is the case of the highly popular Doctor Who series, which has just this year introduced the Doctor’s first openly gay traveling companion. This character is played by the emerging star Pearl Mackie. Mackie’s first major role on television, Bill Potts, is a character which has received a great deal of attention. Mackie herself has expressed her pride in portraying a character with which marginalized

Doctor Who Series 10 Episode 7 Review – ‘The Pyramid At The End Of The World’

Villordsutch reviews Doctor Who Series 10 Episode 7: The Pyramid At The End Of The World…

Directed by: Daniel Nettheim

Written by: Peter Harness & Steven Moffat

Doctor – “What do you depend on?”

Nardole – “Air, Water, Food, Beer.”

Following on from last week’s rather excellent Extremis – in which we discovered that not only was virtually the entire episode a simulation for an upcoming invasion of Earth, but also what occupied the Vault under Bristol University – this week’s episode, written by both Steven Moffat and Peter Harness (The Zygon Invasion/Inversion), marks the initial step over ‘the line in the sand’ for the corpse-like Monks.

It’s ‘take-two’ with Bill and Penny, and as they sit discussing in Bills flat the supposed goings on that happened during their last “date” – and the failed evening of romance due to the rude injection of his Holiness the Pope – they are again interrupted but »

With spoilers, our review of Doctor Who series 10 episode 7, The Pyramid At The End Of The World...

This review contains spoilers. Our spoiler-free review is here.

10.7 The Pyramid At The End Of The World

This is an episode, I’d suggest, where the bulk of conversation is going to be centered on the ending. But we’ll get there. Because it’s also one that demonstrates it’s the small things that matter. In the case of the world ending this time around, it’s miniscule details that can kickstart the process. A dropped glass after a few drinks the night before. A pair of spectacles getting smashed in an innocent accident, in turn limiting the eyesight of Rachel Denning's otherwise super-efficient scientist. A Time Lord losing his sight – save for the ability to read some emails in his glasses - by trying to save his companion. »

Picking up from last week's Extremis, Doctor Who series 10 moves on to The Pyramid At The End Of The World. Here are our thoughts...

10.7 The Pyramid At The End Of The World

Interesting. Not without a few problems, but interesting, and plenty in this one to make you want the gap between this and the next episode to be less than seven days.

Picking up in the aftermath of last week’s Extremis, The Pyramid At The End Of The World is an episode of Doctor Who that continues to ramp things up, as the threat to the world escalates. It’s the kind of episode, in fact, that you could imagine fitting a few episodes later in a run, with a growing threat and some other stuff I'm not going to talk about here.

To give you a flavour of what you get, though, it comes »

Doctor Who Four Doctor Crossover Coming This August From Titan Comics

24 May 2017 8:31 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

With a new Doctor Who on the horizon – as incumbent actor Peter Capaldi will exit the show this Christmas – what better time is there to celebrate the different incarnations of the time-travelling hero that the hit BBC sci-fi series has brought us over the past ten years? That’s the thinking from Titans Comics, as they’re about to deliver a four-way crossover featuring the union of Doctors Nine through Twelve.

The crossover will be titled Doctor Who: The Lost Dimension and, according to Comic Book Resources, is “set to tell its story in eight chapters over the course of three months.” It kicks off with an Alpha Issue to be released in August, ahead of Titan’s “Doctor Who Comics Day” global event on Saturday September 2nd. The series will come from the creators of the various Doctor Who books out there: writers Nick Abadzis (Tenth Doctor), George Mann »

In a new trailer for the series’ fifth and final season, the so-called ditzy sestra declares, “I’m getting into a dress, and then I am going to get down to the truth.” (Considering how close she got to it last season, I wouldn’t be surprised if Krystal is the one holding all the answers at the show’s end.)

‘Doctor Who 10×06: Extremis’ Review

22 May 2017 6:01 AM, PDT | Blogomatic3000 | See recent Blogomatic3000 news »

If there is one problem with Doctor Who it is that things tend to stay the same, and we see nothing really that new. What we’ve needed is something to shake up the status quo. Extremis was promised to be a big episode, but the result was something of a refreshing surprise that many won’t have seen coming.

When The Doctor (Peter Capaldi) is called on to read the Veritas, Bill (Pearl Mackie) and Nardole (Matt Lucas) accompany him to the Vatican. With the legend that anybody who reads the book commits suicide, the news that a translation has spread online is causing much worry, but can The Doctor discover the truth of the book?

The little you read about what goes on in the episode, the better. This is why I won’t be discussing much about the plot, but what works in the episode. I promise »

Hugh Grant Returns to British TV for First Time in Nearly 25 Years

Hugh Grant is set to play a disgraced British politician in true-story drama “A Very English Scandal,” the BBC said Monday. The project will reunite Grant with director Stephen Frears following the actor’s acclaimed performance in last year’s “Florence Foster Jenkins,” which earned him Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for best supporting actor.

In “A Very English Scandal,” Grant will play Jeremy Thorpe, the first British politician in modern times to stand trial for murder. In 1979, Thorpe, then leader of the Liberal party and the youngest leader of any British political party in a hundred years, was accused of conspiring to murder his ex-lover, Norman Scott. The film is based on a book by British journalist John Preston.

The three-part drama for flagship channel BBC One marks Grant’s return to British television for the first time in nearly 25 years, when he starred in “The Changeling,” an episode of the BBC’s anthology drama series »
