‘Top of the Lake: China Girl’: Elisabeth Moss and Nicole Kidman Champion Women in TV and Preview a Season on Motherhood

“It’s wonderful to be a Campion woman,” Nicole Kidman said during the Television Critics Association press tour panel for “Top of the Lake: China Girl.”

Joining co-stars Elisabeth Moss, Gwendoline Christie, and Alice Englert, Kidman praised the director and co-writer of the new season, and joined her cast-mates in praising women’s growing presence in television.

“I’ve known Jane since I was 14, so I had incredible trust in her,” Kidman said about Campion, who she first worked with in the director’s graduate film. “Since I met her as a teenager, she encountered me with all my insecurities, hopes, and desires, so she really knows me. I feel unbelievably safe. I’ve shared my deepest and most intimate secrets with her.”

‘The Simpsons Movie 2’ Is in ‘Earliest Stages of Development,’ According to Director David Silverman

It’s been 10 years since “The Simpsons Movie” arrived in theaters and pink donuts arrived in 7-11. Given how successful the film was — it made some $527 million and earned positive reviews — many have naturally wondered if and when we might see a sequel. According to David Silverman, who directed the 2007 film, a silver-screen return to Springfield might be in the cards after all — though it’s still in “the very earliest stages” of development.

“I certainly am cautious about a couple things. I wouldn’t want it to be risky in terms of budget, and I would not want it to be anything that we did purely for the money,” he tells Entertainment Weekly while marking the film’s 10th anniversary. “I would want it to be a really great movie. »

‘Dietland’: Weight Loss-Meets-‘Fight Club’ Series From Marti Noxon Gets AMC Pickup

AMC has ordered a 10-episode adaptation of “Dietland,” the 2015 novel about weight loss and beauty, from executive producer Marti Noxon (“UnReal,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer”).

The novel, written by Sarai Walker and released in 2015, takes place in the beauty industry and mixes character drama and revenge fantasy to explore society’s obsession with weight loss and beauty. Kirkus Reviews called the book “part ‘Fight Club,’ part feminist manifesto, an offbeat and genre-bending novel that aims high.”

Noxon, who will direct the first several episodes of the series, elaborated more about the show on Saturday at AMC’s portion of the Television Critics Association press tour. Noxon said she was concerned at first that she wouldn’t find a home for “Dietland,” which she noted features a “funny and poignant” story that “you can’t quantify.”

But it’s also dark: The main character is morbidly obese, and finds herself being pulled between two feminist cults. »

Sean Spicer’s recent departure as White House Press Secretary means we may never see Melissa McCarthy play ol’ Spicey on “Saturday Night Live” again, but fret not: Mario Cantone is here to impersonate Anthony Scaramucci. The new White House Communications Director — who, contrary to what you might have heard, isn’t like Steve Bannon and definitely isn’t trying to suck his own cock — has instantly emerged as one of the administration’s most outrageous figures, which is saying a lot.

Two Authors Improvised a Slasher Film on Twitter and Spooky Hilarity Ensued

Twitter isn’t always terrible. The most recent example of the micro-blogging platform actually being kinda cool once in awhile came courtesy of genre authors Sam Sykes and Chuck Wendig, who improvised a slasher movie in 140 characters or fewer (at a time, at least) yesterday. Taking place in real time and lasting a little more than an hour, their back-and-forth might be the genre’s most original offering in years.

Trump News: Late Night Show Writers Talk About the Challenges of Keeping Audiences Laughing As The World Burns

Perhaps you’ve heard: There’s been plenty of news out of Washington, D.C. lately.

Under ordinary circumstances, this would make the jobs of late-night comedy writers that much easier. But over the past year, these headlines are causing much more anxiety than laughs, even for the people whose job it is keep people entertained. A panel of late-night staffers spoke to the Television Critics Association on Saturday about the new challenges that have come with their job descriptions as things change in the White House.

“My first thought is always, ‘Were all going to die,’” said Christine Nangle, head writer for Comedy Central’s “The President Show. “Then you have to remember, is there anything for us to pull from?”

‘Underground’: Director Anthony Hemingway Remains Hopeful, But Fate to Be Determined Soon

The final decision on whether “Underground” can be revived should be known by the end of August.

That’s the word from executive producer and director Anthony Hemingway, who said Saturday that the show hasn’t yet been officially canceled. Wgn America opted not to renew the show for a third season this spring, along with “Outsiders,” and wiped its development slate as it shifted direction away from premium scripted series.

“We’re still waiting,” he said. “I think we have until the end of August to have the definitive answer on whether we find a new home or not. I stay hopeful until the last moment.”

‘All Dogs Go to Heaven’ Has a Deleted Scene in Hell, and It’s Here to Ruin Your Childhood — Watch

I don’t remember what happens in “All Dogs Go to Heaven” and don’t plan to find out anytime soon because I’m worried it’ll just make me sad. That said, I certainly don’t recall a scene in which one of the gone-too-soon pooches descends into the fiery belly of hell and narrowly escapes taking up permanent residence among the other condemned souls — apparently for good reason, as the sequence in question was cut. It’s made its way online, as all such things eventually do, and is now available to retroactively ruin your childhood on YouTube. Watch below if you dare.

‘Jack Ryan’: Amazon’s TV Series Is Inspired by the Harrison Ford Movies, Debuts March 2018

Even though the new Amazon adaptation, “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan,” uses the author’s name in the title, it’s more of a symbolic gesture than denoting strict adherence to the past. After all, the eight-episode series isn’t based on any of Clancy’s books. But it is inspired by the franchise’s impressive past.

“It’s an original story, so it’s not an adaptation of any of the novels,” director and executive producer Daniel Sackheim told IndieWire. “But I think it’s inspired in the same way as the Harrison Ford movies.”

Speaking after the Director’s Guild of America panel at Saturday’s Television Critics Association press tour, Sackheim confirmed that the series, starring John Krasinski as the titular hero, will premiere in March 2018 on Amazon.

Jerry Seinfeld Tells Norm Macdonald ‘The Greatest Jew Joke I’ve Ever Heard’ — Watch

They weren’t in cars getting coffee, but last night Jerry Seinfeld and Norm Macdonald had a funny — and somewhat puzzling — exchange on the latter’s show. Though best known for his “What’s the deal with…” style of observational humor, Seinfeld is no stranger to more heady fare. ‘Room 104’ Director Breaks Down the Mind-Boggling Ending to Episode 1 — Spoilers

28 July 2017 8:59 PM, PDT

[Editor’s Note: The below interview and analysis includes spoilers for “Room 104,” Episode 1, “Ralphie.”]

Room 104” welcomed guests with an absolutely wild first episode, setting a high bar for the season to come (but one they do meet).

In “Ralphie,” a single father (Ross Partridge) leaves his adolescent son, Ralph (Ethan Kent), with a babysitter, Meg (Melonie Diaz), while he goes out on a date. The job seems simple enough: Feed the kid, get him in bed at a reasonable hour, and expect the dad to return relatively early. Granted, Meg wasn’t explicitly instructed not to strangle Ralph to death, but she also wasn’t warned of an evil, identical twin brother named Ralphie who terrorizes them both.

…if that’s what happened. Thanks to a few well-placed clues as to Meg’s mental state, including a lack of references, as well as the creepy vibes of the room itself, it’s plausible she might have imagined the whole thing. Ralph could have »

After one season on the air, “The Girlfriend Experience” has already established itself as one of the most innovative limited series on TV.
