Constitution Gardens

Phase II of the Rehabilitation of Constitution Gardens

"The revitalization of Constitution Gardens has practical, tourist-oriented purposes... But it’s also an attempt to give a part of the Mall its own character, to make Constitution Gardens a destination without a monument to act as a draw." - The Washington Post

The reimagined Constitution Gardens will retain its original purpose as a pastoral setting, but offer sustainable space for education and entertainment throughout the year, day and night. The restored space will serve as a much-needed gateway onto America’s Front Yard, orienting visitors with a welcome center and inviting spaces to relax, revive, or learn.

The Constitution Gardens site plan, designed by Rogers Partners Architects + Urban Designers and PWP Landscape Architecture, was chosen through a national, juried design competition. The winning designs provide state-of-the-art environmental, functional, and operational sustainability.

Recognizing the historic context of the site, the designs also offer exciting educational opportunities for students and families. Visitors will be able to reflect upon their experiences while enjoying breathtaking views of the new Constitution Gardens lake and surrounding monuments and memorials.

On October 1st, 2015, the National Capital Planning Commission approved preliminary and final site and building plans for Phase I of the Constitution Gardens project.
