American Express Announces $1 Million Grant to Restore Historic Lockkeeper’s House

The American Express Foundation is enabling the Trust for the National Mall to give new life to the oldest structure on the National Mall – the historic Lockkeeper’s House – with a $1 million gift announced in December 2014. The grant funding will support the Trust’s work to lift and move the Lockkeeper’s House approximately 32 feet in order to protect it from the heavily trafficked corner of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW. News of the grant and the Trust’s plans to restore this historic home garnered unprecedented coverage, totaling an estimated 384 million media impressions.

"'So many people have driven by it, and they don’t know what it is or what it was or what it will be,' said Timothy McClimon, the president of the American Express Foundation, which donated $1 million of the $7 million being spent on the effort. 'It’s a fun, quirky little project, where we can restore some history.'" -- The New York Times

"Renovations, funded by a $1 million grant from the American Express Foundation, will be completed by August 2016, says Kristine Fitton, a spokeswoman for the Trust for the National Mall." -- The Washington Post
