11 hours ago | IMDb News

During a Facebook Live with Kevin Smith aboard the #IMDboat at Comic-Con 2017, comic-book creator Todd McFarlane dropped an exclusive: He's working with producer Jason Blum on a new Spawn movie. What's better: McFarlane has a draft of the script ready to go, he'll be making his directorial debut on the project, which will certainly be a hard-R vision of his former mercenary turned reluctant soldier of the devil.

Venice: New Films by George Clooney, Guillermo Del Toro, Stephen Frears Expected to World Premiere (Exclusive)

20 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Rome – George Clooney’s “Suburbicon,” Guillermo Del Toro’s “The Shape of Water,” Stephen Frears’ “Victoria and Abdul,” and Paolo Virzi’s “Ella and John,” starring Helen Mirren and Donald Sutherland, are among the titles strongly tipped to world premiere at the upcoming 74th Venice Film Festival.

Also expected to make their worldwide bows on the Lido are Paul Schrader’s “First Reformed,” Andrew Haigh’s “Lean on Pete,” and Lucrecia Martel’s “Zama.”

Less than a week before the official announcement, the buzz on the Venice lineup remains somewhat muted, though some locked-in titles have surfaced, including Alexander Payne’s “Downsizing,” which will open the fest. There’s also certainty over the absence of some titles – especially “Blade Runner 2049” and Darren Aronofsky’s “Mother!”, both high-profile movies that had been considered as possibilities.

Suburbicon,” starring Matt Damon, Julianne Moore, Josh Brolin, and Oscar Isaac, looks set to be the second Paramount picture to launch from »

16 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

Ben Affleck is heading to Comic-Con this weekend to promote Warner Bros.’ upcoming Justice League movie, set for a Nov. 17 release. But how many more times is he likely to put on the Batsuit? Probably not many, if ever again.

Yes, Warners’ film studio chief Toby Emmerich tells The Hollywood Reporter, "Ben is our Batman. We love him as Batman. We want to keep him in the cowl as long as we can." And Matt Reeves, who will direct the studio’s still-undated (and unwritten) The Batman, has said that he means to keep Affleck in the »

Fox Reportedly “Reassessing” Future of the ‘Alien’ Franchise in Wake of ‘Alien: Covenant’

18 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

It appears the future of the Alien franchise is once again uncertain. Anticipation was mighty high for director Ridley Scott’s return with 2012’s Prometheus, and indeed despite some mixed reviews, the sci-fi pic grossed a hearty $403.3 million worldwide. Scott intended for Prometheus to relaunch the franchise in an intriguing way, but while he was busy making Exodus: Gods and Kings and The Martian, filmmaker Neill Blomkamp convinced Fox to give his own separate idea for an Alien movie a go. However, as soon as Scott got wind of this, he forged ahead with Prometheus 2, … »

Kevin Spacey Playing Author Gore Vidal in Netflix Original Biopic (Exclusive)

19 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Rome – Oscar winner Kevin Spacey is playing writer Gore Vidal in a new Netflix original biopic, “Gore,” which is in production in Italy.

U.S. director Michael Hoffman (“The Last Station”) is helming the 1980s-set film about the late American author, playwright, and occasional political candidate. “Gore” is currently shooting in Rome but will move next month to Vidal’s longtime villa in Ravello, a village on the Amalfi Coast, sources tell Variety.

British producer Andy Paterson (“Girl with a Pearl Earring”) is producing “Gore” for Netflix.

Netflix was not available for comment.

Vidal’s beloved gravity-defying villa La Rondinaia, nestled on a craggy cliff in Ravello a thousand feet above the Tyrrhenian Sea, will feature prominently in the movie, according to the president of the Ravello Foundation, Sebastiano Maffettone, local media reported. At La Rondinaia, which he sold in 2004, Vidal entertained his vast network of high-profile friends and acquaintances, including Greta Garbo, »

Jane Campion: ‘The clever people used to do film. Now they do TV’

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

From Sweetie to The Piano, she has made some of cinema’s strangest, strongest films. So why has she switched to the small screen?

Jane Campion, one of the world’s great film directors, has had it with the movies. It is eight years since she last made a full-length feature (the Keats biopic Bright Star), and 14 years since her sexually explicit thriller In The Cut almost did for her career. Now she is having a Gloria Swanson moment: she’s still big, it’s just the pictures that got small.

Movies, she says, have become conservative cash cows. “The really clever people used to do film. Now, the really clever people do television. I’d been feeling, in the film world, that if you come up with ideas, and you share them, the first concern is: how is the audience going to react?” Television has reinvigorated her. “Cinema in »

Update, Saturday 12:53Am: Dunkirk is excelling with a $20M opening day, bound for a $51.8M opening weekend at 3,720 venues. That’s a very good start for this movie I’m told, one which will enable this British World War II title to leg out to a 3x multiple. Director Christopher Nolan’s previous movie Interstellar posted a 3-day of $47.5M and churned a near 4x multiple at the domestic B.O. ending with $188M. His films just have great holds. ‘The Defenders’: Cinematic Episode 1 Premieres at Comic-Con in Marvel Panel Full of Surprises

Marvel likes to catch people off guard, which it more than did today at Comic-Con with its highly anticipated event series “The Defenders.” After a short panel moderated by executive producer Jeph Loeb, featuring the massive cast of the Marvel crossover event, the actors “goaded” him into screening the first full episode of the series, which premieres August 18 on Netflix.

“Frank’s very much in my heart,” Bernthal said. “I’m eternally grateful to get another crack at him.

‘Twin Peaks’: David Lynch’s Short Film, The Cast Reacts to Dougie, and More Highlights From Comic-Con

6 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Because “Twin Peaks” creators David Lynch and Mark Frost were unable to attend the series’ Comic-Con panel in San Diego, the director created a video greeting for the fans.

And, as you can imagine, it was beyond words. But since the short film has yet to be released, we’ll try to do it justice.

Lynch’s message never got past a simple greeting — “Good afternoon ladies and gentleman” — but he made the most of a static camera in a dark room. Pointed at the director sitting in a wooden chair, Lynch kept getting distracted by action offscreen.

First, someone walked out a door and fell, presumably, to his death. Then Lynch showed off a clinched hand holding a golf ball Lynch described as “the last golf ball O.J. Simpson hit before going into prison in Nevada” before the camera cut out. When it started up again, a horse, a gun, »

And, by the by, I don’t say ‘B-Squad’ in a condescending or dismissive fashion. Luke Cage, Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist have all made the most of their smaller scale TV roots, tackling far more adult content (rape, racism, ninjas) than their big screen counterparts.
