Olmsted Light Retrofit

The lighting system along the National Mall from 3rd to 15th streets was significantly improved upon in 2012, thanks to support from Osram Sylvania and Pepco. Osram Sylvania donated 175 retro-fitted LED bulbs and kits, while Pepco provided the installation of the environmentally friendly lighting systems.

The new LED lights brightly illuminate the turf on the National Mall, increasing visitor safety on America’s Front Yard while allowing for recreational activities to continue later into the night. By replacing the lights, which have a life expectancy of 25 years, the Trust for the National Mall, through the generosity of Osram Sylvania and Pepco, have helped the National Park Service save 65% of the energy previously used in the park.
