He is also the founder and CEO of Hamilton Captive Management, LLC, one of the most admired and respected management firms in the country, as well as numerous other insurance companies. Mr. Strauss has authored several books on captive insurance, including Captive Insurance Companies for the Small Business Owner and The Definitive Guide to Captive Insurance Companies. The Business Owner's Definitive Guide to Captive Insurance Companies: What You Need To Know About Formation and Management by Peter Strauss is an informative guide to finding the best way to create captive insurance. I didn't know anything at all about captive insurance until I started looking into it. The best way that I can summarize it is to say that sometimes a business can create its own insurance company strictly with the intention of insuring itself. This is know as captive insurance and I believe it is meant to replace self insurance, which sounds the same but has a few differences between the two. What this book did was explain what captive insurance is and then explain the benefits of using it. It saves the business lots of money which also focusing specifically on the areas where the loss may take place. It also allowed the business owners to have control of the insurance of their own company which has lots of benefits to it as well. Anyone who is looking to start their own business should give this a read, or anyone who already owns their own business and is looking for ways to save some money. They book is organized well and flows from one chapter to the next. Nice job to the author for bringing up a topic that lots of people know nothing about and will help them greatly in the business endeavors.

South Carolina author Peter J Strauss has an impressive resume – founder of two firms (including the Hamilton Captive Management LLC, quite pertinent to the content of this fascinating book), graduate of the New England School of Law, Harvard Business School, and a degree in estate planning from University of Miami! He is a regular speaker for important organizations and has written both articles and books on the subject of this sound guide.

For those unfamiliar with the term, a Captive Insurance Company is defined as an insurance company that is wholly owned and controlled by its insureds. While this concept may seem ominous to some, the manner in which Peter defines and discusses and guides in this writing is so rational and comprehensible that it begs close attention – and learning.

An example of Peter’s writing style follows: ‘Life is filled with risk. Every day, you take risks in your business. Some of those risks are calculated – after all, you must take on some risk in order to make a profit in your business. Other risks may not be so well known to you or may not usually be at the forefront of your mind. For example, you may carry insurance on the truck used to make deliveries in your business, but you may not think to carry similar insurance on the computer used to track your deliveries or inventory. There may be other risks that you know about but that are simply too expensive for you to insure or that you didn’t know insurance was available for. To further compound the issue, there is no tax benefit to self-insurance – it is not tax deductible…The solution – self-insurance trough a captive structure can create substantial tax deductions, resulting in tremendous tax savings.’

What follows is one of the most lucid explanations of just what captive insurance is, how to maximize the full potential of a captive insurance company, how to manage and how to protect assets from lawsuits, and how to decide if captive insurance is right for a business. Well documented and with a fine appendix sharing captive insurance cases and rulings, this is a guide that is useful for all business people, no matter the size of business addressed. This title provides the A to Z when it comes to captive insurance companies. I was unaware of what this meant before I started reading this book. However, it covers pretty much everything you need to know, starting with the history of how the concept started. There are also details on how to implement this type of company for your business. This means that this book would be invaluable to someone that is an entrepreneur or operates a small business. The information is easy to understand and even if you don’t know anything about insurance, it is explained well overall. If you do know about insurance, it should make even more sense to you. The chapters are quite expansive, and there’s even a chapter to help you figure out if it is something you’d want to use for your company. The appendix is also quite fascinating, since it lists court cases to research for more information.

I've read a lot of books that help your business grow, but this one seemed unique to me because here the author tells us about Captive insurance. This book will definitely be useful to all business owners, as they can reduce their costs, thereby increasing profits. Previously, I did not know about such a concept as captive insurance, but the author who knows the topic about which he writes, told everything in detail and it was interesting. I really respect the authors who are professionals in their field and they share their experience with readers. I liked how the author structured the information, it was easy for me to understand. It is also a modern and useful book. I advise you to read this book, as this will help you better understand the details of the business. Just take a little time and you will realize how much it was worth it. Highly recommended!

To start off, I'd like to say that I had no idea that a thing like captive insurance even existed. I stumbled on this book while reading about the current market situation where I live at the moment, where businesses are shutting down because of rising insurance costs due to a 'suing left and right' culture. Captive insurance seems like a very good way for companies to perhaps navigate the current scenario and come out fighting. Captive insurance is basically like self-insurance, but slightly different. It's a way for companies to create an insurance company within the organisation and insure themselves instead of looking outwards. I particularly like this idea because of the massive twists and turns that one needs to navigate when it comes to the daunting concept of insurance. That's just my opinion, but I think this book should be read by more people because of the sheer depth of information that it provides on a very interesting and useful concept.
