Rare Russian Hill mid-century modern with original details and panoramic bay views asks $3.5 million

Located only a block and a half from Ghirardelli Square, 836 Bay St. stands apart from the Victorians, Edwardians, 1920s-era apartment buildings and Mediterranean Marina-style homes that make up most of the housing in this stretch of Russian Hill.

Built in 1958, this four-story single-family still has many mid-century modern details, as well as five balconies that take advantage of the Russian Hill Park views in the front of the home and the panoramic bay views in the back.

The mid-century design elements and the incredible views are both front and center in the home’s split-level living/dining room. There are wood built-ins and original hardwoods in the raised dining area and sunken living room, which also has a large brick fireplace and floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors that lead out to the bay view deck.

Four of the home’s five bedrooms, including two en-suite, are located one floor above, providing even better views. The bedroom level is accessed via a central glass atrium stairwell, which floods the home with light. Like the living and dining area, the bedrooms also have original built-ins and wood floors.

The kitchen and bathrooms also appear to be in largely 1958 condition, though that may not be as much of a selling point, depending on your feelings on brown ovens and mint green tile. We have a feeling that the future owners, mid-century fans though they may be, will have some updates to make in these spaces.

Or it’s possible the future owners will do away with all the original details and reconfigure the home completely, as the listing notes that the home is zoned RH-3 (meaning three units could be built there) with a 40-foot height maximum and unfinished basement level.

In either case, the $3.5-million asking price is surely just a starting point for the total budget that will go into modernizing this mid-century.
