A man was convicted Thursday of first-degree murder and torture for a killing another man in Marina in 2015 that he had met through a Craigslist ad seeking sex, according to the Monterey County District Attorney's Office.

Daniel Lorenzo Petty, 23, of Salinas, admitted to police investigators that he killed Francisco Aguayo, 52, of Salinas, because he wanted to see what it was like to kill another person, prosecutors said.

He said it took 30 minutes for the victim to die. When Aguayo was found, he had been shot, stabbed, beaten and burned.

Petty and Aguayo had met three times prior to the murder. On Dec. 10, 2015, Aguayo responded to a Craigslist ad posted by Petty seeking sex and they agreed to meet at a Lucky store in Marina.

Surveillance video showed Aguayo's truck arriving at the Lucky store at about 11:30 a.m.

Two days later, at about 9 a.m., a hiker's dog found Aguayo's body about a quarter-mile from the end of Dunes Drive in Marina. Aguayo's truck was found by California Highway Patrol officers in Chualar later that day.

Petty was arrested on Dec. 21, 2015, and admitted to the crimes during the police interview.
