Hepatitis B is a liver infection caused by the #HepatitisB virus (HBV). Hepatitis B is transmitted when blood, semen, or other body fluids from a person infected with the Hepatitis B #virus enters the body of someone who is not infected. This can happen through sexual contact; sharing needles, syringes, or other equipment to inject drugs; or from mother to baby at birth. The best way to prevent Hepatitis B is by getting vaccinated. Have you heard of the bacteria Elizabethkingia? The name belongs to a group of bacteria that live all around us in soil and water, and named after CDC bacteriologist Elizabeth King, whose ground-breaking work helped to characterize the genus.

In 1948, Elizabeth O. King joined the staff of the Communicable Disease Center, now CDC, in Atlanta, where she worked until her untimely death in April 1966. Chickenpox is a very contagious disease caused by the varicella-zoster #virus (VZV). It causes a blister-like rash, itching, tiredness, and fever. The rash appears first on the trunk, back, and face and then spreads over the entire body causing between 250 and 500 itchy blisters. #Chickenpox can be serious, especially in babies, adults, and people with weakened immune systems. The best way to prevent chickenpox is to get the chickenpox #vaccine. People can get Histoplasmosis, a fungal infection caused by Histoplasma, after breathing in the microscopic fungal spores from the air. Although most people who breathe in the spores don’t get sick, those who do may have a fever, cough, and fatigue. Many people who get histoplasmosis will get better on their own without medication, but in some people, such as those who have weakened immune systems, the infection can become severe. Vibriosis causes an estimated 80,000 illnesses and 100 deaths in the United States every year. People with vibriosis become infected by consuming raw or undercooked seafood or exposing a wound to seawater. Most infections occur from May through October when water temperatures are warmer.
