‘Doctor Who’ Showrunner to Press: ‘Shut the Hell Up’ About Jodie Whittaker Backlash

Outgoing “Doctor Who” showrunner Steven Moffat blames the media for what he says is a false narrative about backlash against the casting of a woman in the show’s title role.
“There has been so many press articles about the backlash among the ‘Doctor Who’ fandom against the casting of a female Doctor,” Moffat said Sunday at Comic-Con. “There has been no backlash at all. The story of the moment is that the notionally conservative ‘Doctor Who’ fandom has utterly embraced that change completely — 80 percent approval on social media, not that I check these things obsessively. And yet so many people wanted to pretend there’s a problem. There isn’t.”
Jodie Whittaker will take over the role of the Doctor from Peter Capaldi beginning next season. Whitaker will be the 13th actor to portray the character, and the first woman.

Who was happier to see new “Black Panther” footage at San Diego Comic-Con: The fans or the cast?
It was a close call as the audience in Hall H on Saturday leapt to its feet, while the star-studded ensemble grinned and joined together for a group hug. The moderator of Marvel’s panel on Saturday, Chris Hardwick, informed the crowd that the stars had just seen the fresh film footage for the first time as well. Basically, it was loud.
Director Ryan Coogler introduced the footage, which was for the Comic-Con crowd’s eyes only, following a brief Q&A with a long lineup of cast members, including Chadwick Boseman, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Daniel Kaluuya, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.

The Comic-Con panel for “Doctor Who” was always going to be a bit bittersweet since this was the last one for Peter Capaldi as the Doctor. Sadly, Pearl Mackie, who plays new companion Bill Potts, also confirmed that she will be leaving the series after the Christmas special.
Mackie has become an instant fan-favorite from her very first episode. Bill Potts had the honor of being the first openly gay companion in the series. While her sexuality wasn’t the main focus for her character, it wasn’t ignored either. In scenes throughout the season, various characters were seen accepting the fact that she is gay with no real issues. In the season finale, she was seen joining her love interest from the first episode to explore space aboard an alien ship.

“Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency” was one of the final pop culture pieces to present at San Diego Comic-Con this year, but fans of the BBC America sci-fi series were not left disappointed.
That’s because a new sneak peek for Season 2 has officially dropped, featuring stars Samuel Barnett, Elijah Wood, and Jade Eshete.
In the clip, Barnett’s titular Dirk finds himself held captive in some sort of futuristic prison. Wood and Eshete then break into the building in an attempt to rescue their eccentric friend — complete with their same masks from Season 1. Unfortunately, it turns out just to be a bad dream with Dirk remaining in the clutches of his captors.
“Dirk Gently” is based on novels by Douglas Adams, the beloved British author who wrote “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.” Max Landis created, primarily wrote, and exec produced the series.

Golden Screen Rejects MM2 Asia’s Bid to Acquire Stake in Singapore’s Largest Cinema Chain

Singapore-based MM2 Asia’s plan to acquire a 50% stake in the country’s largest cinema chain has collapsed after the owner of the rest of the shares did not approve the plan.
It was announced Monday that the Singaporean media mini-conglomerate failed to get approval from Golden Screen, which owns half the stakes in Dartina Development. Dartina Development runs the Golden Village cinema business in Singapore.
MM2 Asia is the first film company listed on the Singapore Stock Exchange. On June 13, the company made the acquisition plan public, announcing that it was in talks with Village Cinemas Australia to buy Village’s 50% share of Dartina for $133 million (S$184 million).
The deal was made on condition that approval from Golden Screen, which owns the rest of the stakes in the Golden Village theater chain, be granted by July 21. But such approval was not obtained by the deadline.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised Oscar-winning Hollywood director Oliver Stone, commenting in favorable terms on his recently released The Putin Interviews.
The news came as organizers unveiled Monday that Stone is set to collect the Sarajevo Film Festival's Heart of Sarajevo Award next month.

Sarajevo Film Festival To Pay Tribute To Oliver Stone

Oliver Stone will be honored at this year’s Sarajevo Film Festival. Stone will be in town for the 23rd edition of the Festival, where he will receive the Honorary Heart of Sarajevo.
Stone is a three-time Oscar winner and one of the preeminent filmmakers of his generation, making movies including “Platoon,” “Wall Street,” and “Natural Born Killers.”
He has also made documentary series, with his four-part interview series with Russian president Vladimir Putin, “The Putin Interviews,” launching on Showtime earlier this year.
The Sarajevo Film Festival runs from August 11 to 18. The organizers have already said that comedy actor John Cleese will also receive the Honorary Heart accolade this year.

The director general of the BBC, Tony Hall, has responded to a letter from the public broadcaster’s female stars over its gender pay gap, acknowledging that the organization must do more to fix the problem and adding that the salary figures for next year will “look very different.”
Last week, the BBC was forced to publish the earnings and names of the stars whom it pays more than £150,000 ($195,600), revealing a startling pay gap between men and women.
Two thirds of the top earners were men, prompting a group of the BBC’s female stars to sign an open letter to Hall in which they wrote: “You have said that you will ‘sort’ the gender pay gap by 2020, but the BBC has known about the pay disparity for years.
