CORVALLIS -- Blake Brandel used to have trouble bulking up.

But during the 2016 season, when players typically lose weight, the Oregon State offensive tackle gained 10 pounds. Then during the offseason, he added another 15 pounds to up his weight to about 325.

"It's kind of like a second puberty or something like that," Brandel said with a laugh last week. "I've been eating normal and everything. I just gained another 15 pounds. I'm like 'Oh, this is great.'"

Brandel's growing frame could prove beneficial. The sophomore is now suddenly one of the more experienced members of a Beavers new-look offensive line facing questions as fall camp begins Tuesday.

"I'm trying to step into a leadership role," Brandel said.

OSU lost three starters from last season's unit that helped the Beavers set a program record for yards per carry -- left tackle and future NFL draft pick Sean Harlow, tackle-turned-guard Dustin Stanton and center Gavin Andrews. Yet Brandel gained valuable experience as a redshirt freshman in 2016, beginning the season as the starting left tackle before flipping to the right side when Harlow returned.

Brandel also believes in the progress of his returning teammates.

He called Gus Lavaka and Trent Moore "freaks" in the weight room, gushing that Lavaka can easily squat 700 pounds. He praised the emotional leadership of senior Fred Lauina, a part-time starter throughout his career, and the intelligence of Sumner Houston, who is moving from the defensive line to center. Junior college transfers Justin Sattelmaier and Clay Cordasco will also compete for immediate playing time.

The Beavers need the offensive line to open holes for a deep running back group, which returns all-conference candidate Ryan Nall and Artavis Pierce and welcomes transfers Trevorris Johnson and Thomas Tyner. That offensive line will also need to hold in pass coverage, particularly if more traditional gunner Jake Luton wins the job.

And Brandel trusts his new-look unit.

"No matter what, I know we're gonna be alright," Brandel said. "We've got a great group of guys (and) lots of talent."
