[Warning: This story contains spoilers for War for the Planet of the Apes]
War for the Planet of the Apes is here to wrap up the trilogy started in 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but in many ways the latest entry in the decades-old franchise is really a setup for the 1968 original.
Loaded with Easter eggs and references to other installments in the series, War carries on the story of Caesar (Andy Serkis), the hyper-intelligent chimpanzee who went from James Franco's pet project in Rise to a leader in 2014's Dawn of the Planet of the »

Disney, Pixar and Marvel and yes, Star Wars collide at the D23 Expo, Disney's fan convention, the latest of which is taking place this weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Star Wars' Carrie Fisher was honored posthumously with the Disney Legends Award, the highest honor the Walt Disney Company can bestow on an individual. The late star's daughter, actress Billie Lourd, penned an emotional acceptance letter on her behalf, which was read aloud by Disney Chairman Bob Iger. Fisher's co-star Mark Hamill received the same honor, as did The View co-host and Egot recipient Whoopi Goldberg, Marvel legend Stan »
Box Office: ‘Planet of the Apes’ Wages $57 Million War Against ‘Spider-Man’
2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »
The “War for the Planet of the Apes” has only just begun, but the primates may have already bested their opponent, Spider-Man. That’s because “Apes” is on its way to a $57 million opening weekend, all but officially usurping “Spider-Man: Homecoming” in its second frame.
After taking in $5 million in Thursday night previews alone, the third film in Fox’s “Planet of the Apes” reboot did not monkey around as it pulled in $22 million from 4,022 theaters on Friday. Unless Peter Parker somehow throws a monkey wrench into their plans, “War” will walk away with a win this weekend to the tune of $57 million.
That number would put it on par with 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes’” $54.8 million debut, but noticeably behind 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’” $72.6 million domestic launch.

Director Matt Reeves' War for the Planet of the Apes is stomping past holdover Spider-Man: Homecoming at the Friday box office for a likely No. 1 finish in its North American debut, according to early returns.
Heading into the weekend, it was unclear whether the final installment in 20th Century Fox's refurbished trilogy would be able to beat Sony's Spider-Man, which swung to a stellar $117 million last weekend.
Apes is projected to gross $18 million or more from 4,022 theaters on Friday for a domestic opening in the $50 million-$55 million range. That would be behind the 2014 sequel »

Disney is heading to space.
After an emotional ceremony honoring this year's Disney Legends, D23 continued in earnest Friday with the company's animation panel — where it announced the next chapter in its Cars universe.
John Lasseter came onstage, using a merch gun to whip the crowd into a frenzy, and he showed off footage from a new Disneytoon project he dubbed "the speed test."
The footage was something akin to Top Gun on steroids, with planes that go all the way into space. The planes had faces, like those seen in the two installments of Cars spinoff Planes, »

Alexander Payne's Downsizing has been selected to open the Venice Film Festival, which runs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 9.
The satire, written by Payne and his frequent collaborator Jim Taylor, stars Matt Damon as a man who decides to shrink himself in order to find a better life. The cast also includes Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, Laura Dern and Jason Sudeikis.
The Venice berth is a first for Payne, whose films have played Cannes, Telluride, Toronto and Sundance, but not the Italian fest, where Downsizing's opening-night slot should position it for high-profile awards-season bid.

Capaldi is the fourth actor to play the hero since the 2005 reboot of the ’80s science fiction show: Christoper Eccleston played the Doctor for the first season, with David Tennant (arguably the most well-received actor) taking on the role for the second, third, and fourth seasons. Matt Smith stepped into the Doctor’s shoes for the following three seasons leading up to Capaldi’s tenure. The ability to cast different actors in the role hinges on the fact that the alien Doctor, when »

'The Wrong Light': Film Review

A dramatic reminder of how easy it is to exploit Westerners' good intentions in cultures they don't understand, The Wrong Light explains how documentarians Josie Swantek Heitz and Dave Adams avoided becoming the mouthpieces of a self-proclaimed rescuer of young Thai girls being sold into prostitution. Despite occasionally shaky storytelling, the doc sticks to its mission even as the most fundamental obstacles arise, producing a dramatic account that will make all do-gooders think twice about how they spend their charitable dollars. Theatrical appeal is modest, but word of mouth should help get the film seen on small screens and in »

You can’t have “the best words” if you can’t correctly spell those words. Even more serious than the Trump administration’s beef with CNN is its beef with grammar–as is evidenced by a score of tweets and official White House documents that are riddled with spelling errors, misused words, and downright gibberish. Here are 20 of the worst (and most laughable) offenses. “Innaccurately” Oh, the irony! The White House tried to call out the Congressional Budget Office for inaccuracy but inaccurately spelled the word “inaccurately.” “Honered” Before “covfefe,” there was “honered.” Of course, newly-inaugurated Trump meant to tweet that he was “honored, »
