Certificate Programs

Community Health Worker

The Community Health Worker (CHW) Certificate program prepares students to work as a member of the healthcare team providing services as part of the patient-entered medical home (PCMH). The program includes lecture, laboratory and clinical components designed to prepare students for entry into professional practice as Community Health Workers in the state of Ohio. Graduates will be able to apply to the Ohio Board of Nursing for their certificate to practice as Community Health Workers.

• Program courses begin in the fall semester (August).
• Two semester program of study
• First Semester - Classes offered two days per week
• Second Semester – Classes are held in a variety of days and times, including evenings, weekends, as well as online courses

Emergency Medical Technician - Basic

Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT) represent the first responders in the emergency medical system. This level of training prepares students to care for patients at the scene of an accident and while transporting patients by ambulance to the hospital under the direction of more highly trained medical personnel.

• Program courses begin in the fall semester (August) on the Toledo campus.
• One semester program
• Students are able to progress into the Paramedic program the semester following successful completion of the EMT program.
• Program content was developed using curriculum and material defined by the National Standard Curriculum.

Medical Coding

The Medical Coding certificate program will prepare students to work as part of the healthcare team as integral members of the health information industry. Medical coders are responsible for selecting the appropriate diagnostic and procedural codes of various medical services for data analysis and reimbursement. The Medical Coding Program is ONLINE!!

• Three semester, online program
• Program courses begin in the fall semester (August).
• Coursework in the program is applicable for students who wish to pursue the HIT program.

Ophthalmic Technology

Lecture courses for the Ophthalmic Technology Certificate Program are offered online with clinical and lab requirements available in Toledo, Youngstown, and Cincinnati. 

If you want a short-term program that will allow you to work directly with patients in a challenging, high-tech and in-demand career, Mercy College’s Ophthalmic Assistant Technology Certificate program might be the perfect program for you. Ophthalmic Assistants are specialists in eye health care that assist the Ophthalmologist in caring for the patient. Our program will prepare students to work as part of the healthcare team in the growing fields of ophthalmology and optometry.

• Two semester program
• Lecture courses are offered online
• Hands-on clinical and lab requirements available in Toledo, Youngstown, and Cincinnati
• Program courses begin in the fall semester (August)

Paramedic

The Paramedic Certificate program prepares students for the State of Ohio Paramedic Certification, eligibility to take National Registry (NREMT) exam, the ability to apply for licensure in other states, and the option of applying college credit earned in certificate program toward advanced degrees in related healthcare fields.

• Program courses begin in the spring semester (January).
• Program content was developed using curriculum and material defined by the National Standard Curriculum

Phlebotomy

The Phlebotomy non-credit certificate program offers content pertaining to routine venipuncture and dermal techniques; non-blood collection procedures; proper specimen handling; safety and infection control; venipuncture equipment; complications; medical ethics; confidentiality; and effective communication. Students will also learn about the function of a full-service laboratory. The clinical experience is scheduled as if it were a full-time job (day shift, Monday-Friday, 8 hours per day, no evenings or weekend hours). Students who successfully complete the lecture, lab and clinical components of this program will be eligible to sit for the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT) Phlebotomy Certification Exam.

Polysomnographic Technology

If you want a short-term program that will allow you to work directly with patients in a challenging, high-tech and in-demand career, Mercy College’s Polysomnographic Technology Certificate program might be the perfect program for you.  Polysomnographic Technologists are the health care practitioners who perform and help interpret sleep studies, which gather extensive data concerning an individual’s physiologic activity while sleeping. Our program will prepare students to work as part of the healthcare team in the growing fields of sleep medicine and polysomnography.

• Three semester, on campus program
• Program courses begin in the spring semester (January).
• Coursework is conveniently offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
• Clinical Practicum is required in the second and third semesters with rotations beginning at 7pm and going into the night.
• Curriculum includes both lecture and lab coursework, providing both knowledge and hands-on experience.
