The Plot: Troubled high school student Clare is gifted an old music box whose inscription promises to grant its owner seven wishes. While Clare is initially skeptical of this magic box, she can't help but be seduced by its dark powers, and is thrilled as her life radically improves with each wish. Clare finally has the life she's always wanted and everything seems perfect - until the people closest to her begin dying in violent and elaborate ways after each wish.

The Plot: The studio behind this horror movie is having myriad distribution issues so hopefully Joey King, who already survived The Conjuring, has one wish left in that evil octagon she was gifted. Barb from "Stranger Things" and Audrey from "Twin Peaks" help ramp up the mystery factor.

Nobody has nice stuff. They have no money. They have no technology. It’s all rubber band technology, and that’s what I thought was fun about it."

G**K U.S. Release Date: August 18 The Plot: Eli and Daniel are two Korean American brothers who own a struggling shoe store and have a unique and unlikely friendship with a young 11-year-old African American girl, Kamilla. The film is set during the first day of the LA riots forcing them to defend their store while contemplating the future of their own personal dreams and the meaning of family.

The Buzz: Anyone over a certain age will draw parallels between Justin Chon's Sundance hit and Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing as Chon throws back to the Rodney King era and shows the effects of that landmark verdict from a fresh perspective.

Polaroid U.S. Release Date: August 25

The Plot: High school loner Bird Fitcher has no idea what dark secrets are tied to the mysterious Polaroid vintage camera she stumbles upon, but it doesn't take long to discover that those who have their picture taken meet a tragic end.

The Buzz: Norwegian director Lars Klevberg got the chance to turn his short movie into a feature after the short made waves at film festivals. Obvious comparisons to The Ring abound, which will only help attract genre fans, and it's great to see Mitch Pileggi (Skinner from "X-Files") in a lead role and Grace Zabriskie (Sarah Palmer from "Twin Peaks") supporting.

Birth of the Dragon U.S. Release Date: August 25

The Plot: In 1960s San Francisco, as Bruce Lee teaches his own type of martial arts to non-Chinese, kung fu master Wong Jack Man is sent from China to stop Lee's heretical ways.

The Buzz: Audiences who managed to catch this biography have called out everyone involved for making a movie that feels anti-Asian and places Steve McKee, a Caucasian character played by Billy Magnussen, at the center of the action. Quietly tucked into the end of the summer calendar, perhaps the idea here is that controversy will help create a profit for the micro-budgeted picture? The Plot: An aimless teenager on the outer edges of Brooklyn struggles to escape his bleak home life and navigate questions of self-identity, as he balances his time between his delinquent friends, a potential new girlfriend, and older men he meets online.

The Buzz: Two features films in, writer/director Eliza Hittman is earning comparisons to Claire Denis and backing herself with admirable crew members such as cinematographer Hélène Louvart to tell her stories of youthful abandon. Underneath this seemingly standard coming-out narrative is Hittman's desire to frame pivotal moments in the lives of her young characters in a distinctive manner. Critics and festival audiences alike have tagged her as a director of note.
