Why did USATF make the Olympic Trials announcement Wednesday? Oregon track & field rundown

Vin Lananna's TrackTown Summer Series wasn't helped by USA Track & Field's announcement on Wednesday.

I'm not sure why USA Track & Field chose Wednesday to announce the 2020 U.S, Olympic Trials would be at Mt. Sac Community College,.

The announcement came the day before the first TrackTown Summer Series meet at Stanford.

I don't think USATF could have picked a worse moment for the summer series, already fighting an uphill battle for attention.

The announcement effectively squashed whatever chance the Stanford meet had to generate attention and momentum heading into Thursday night.

It's baffling, given the summer series is an attempt to revitalize professional track in the U.S.. something USATF should be trying to aid in every way possible.

OK, the BBC story reporting the FBI and IRS are investigating the successful bid by TrackTown and  USATF to bring the 2021 World Outdoor Championships to Eugene, also came out Wednesday. It also undercut the summer series rollout.

USATF can't control that. It could have chosen any of 364 different days to announce the trials site.

TrackTown USA president Vin Lananna also is president of USATF. I suspect he isn't happy.

It was hard to tell for sure from the TrackTown webcast of last night's meet on Facebook Live, but there didn't appear to be many people in the stands at Cobb Track and Angell Field.

The series resumes Sunday afternoon at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham. Here is more information about that meet.

I don't know if Lananna and TrackTown can make the summer series work.

But they have a better chance if USATF is helping the effort, and not hindering it.
