Rebuilding Sylvan Theater

A monumental connection to history and the arts.

Sylvan Theater is an iconic symbol on the National Mall, the only site on the Mall that speaks directly to the arts and its long tradition of free performances. The winning design needed to reflect the importance of the landscape while accommodating to the monumental scale and symbolism of the site.

A green landscape and architectural plan will beautifully and responsibly restore the theater area to the south of the iconic Washington Monument. The winning design by Olin, Weiss/Manfredi restructures the lawn and creates a wooded canopy, a new all-weather café, and an amphitheater to feature the Monument as a backdrop for performances. The new plans allow for a connection from the Washington Monument to the Tidal Basin that has never before existed.
