Push the boundaries of medical science with a degree in biomedical health or human biology.

Our BSc (Hons) Biomedical Health is a progressive, challenging course which focuses on the latest advances in medical research aimed at preventing ill health and prolonging life. We will provide you with a firm grounding in human physiology and anatomy, biochemistry, genetics, medical microbiology, human diseases, environmental health and global health. This will enable you to understand the basis of human disease, diagnosis and treatment. You could also consider our four-year integrated masters degree - the MSci Biomedical Health.

Our BSc (Hons) Human Biology course has been designed to provide you with a comprehensive and clear understanding of the human body, drawing upon fundamental principles of bioscience such as anatomy, genetics and physiology. Your studies will address some of the most pressing health concerns facing society today, such as dementia, cancer and obesity. We examine how these affect the body and how diseases can impact an individual’s mental, as well as physical, wellbeing.

Paid Internship Opportunities

HPV Cells

After being inspired to by her lecturer to help with our teaching team’s research, Agata secured a University funded internship with our Human Health Research Team. She worked on developing a novel screening methodology to detect oral infection with the Human Papilloma Virus, that causes head and neck cancer. The work has now been published and the laboratory-based molecular research that Agata developed helped her secure employment on graduation.

Specialist Facilities

Both courses give you access to high-specification laboratories with modern instrumentation and specialist containment facilities for the growth and manipulation of bacteria and viruses as well as the sequencing and characterisation of DNA. In your second year, there is the chance to observe a post-mortem examination at Royal Derby Hospital.

Expert Teaching Team

All of our teaching team are active human health researchers - covering issues such as potential new treatments for ovarian cancer; the role of the Human Papilloma Virus in the development of head and neck cancers; and antibiotic resistance bacteria in healthy individuals.
