About

I am a Senior Lecturer on the Early Years Teacher Status Programme, a post graduate accreditation endorsed by the National College for Teaching and Leadership. The programme supports those who want to lead and support the delivery of high quality early years services.

Teaching responsibilities

I teach on all aspects within the programme, consisting of theory based sessions, workshops reflecting on the professional Standards for Early Years Teacher Status and assessment prep sessions.

We offer different pathway options for trainees dependant on their experience levels and employment. Teaching strategies are therefore tailored to different pathways. I primarily teach the full time trainees who receive the maximum input within University, supporting their knowledge and understanding of early years practice with a strong foundation in child development theory.

Professional interests

Professional currency is imperative within an academic environment. I therefore ensure I keep up to date with initiatives and legislation within the sector. As a team we have introduced a Professional Development Network which I am partly responsible for hosting. This enables us to bring together representatives from employment, local authorities, children's centres and more, in order to collaborate on the developments within the programme. As a professional it is an important means of keeping up to date.

Membership of professional bodies

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy

Recent conferences

The Early Years Teacher Status team deliver an annual conference for the professional sector. As a member of the team I am partly resposible for the planning and delivery of the conference.

Experience in industry

I have worked within the Early Years sector for 14 years.

From leaving university I undertook a senior management role with a chain of private nurseries, supporting the delivery of the Early Years Foundation Stage framework across a number of settings. It was here that I undertook Early Years Professional Status in its first year of delivery.

From here I progressed to working for Lincolnshire Local Authority within the Birth to Five Service, where I supported the professional development of those with Early Years Professional Status and Early Years Teacher Status within the county. This involved organising CPD opportunities, facilitating study trips, and running regular networking meetings. Whilst doing this I also worked as an Assessor for two different organisations delivering the Early Years Professional Status.

I began working at the University of Derby in 2012.

In the media

As a team we have recently produced a video exploring the potential opportunities for career progression with Early Years Teacher Status.
