The Independent Online

Indoor plants are a big trend this year, with more and more of us getting inspired to “green up our gaffs”. Plants add natural softness and texture to our homes and some species have been shown to have great health benefits: improving indoor air quality and removing toxins. The abundance of varieties means there’s something to suit every interior style and green-fingered capabilities.

A good stand should show off your plants to their best, whether a tall pedestal-style stand for a single pot, or a group of smaller stands. Practically, they should keep the plant looking tidy, be sized to suit anticipated growth, contain excess water, and not damage with the occasional spill.

Check whether yours is suitable for indoors or out, ones that can do both prove more useful in the long term. Wheeled or folding versions are good for practicality, and of course many stands can provide storage for more than just plants.

1. Mia Fleur Grey Plant Stand: £84.95, Mia Fleur

A good all-rounder, this stepped wooden shelf can hold books, blankets and knick-knacks as well as plants. It folds away for storage when not in use, and the shelves are trays that keep objects from falling. The stand is 65cm high and made from FSC-certified pinewood. The design is fairly straightforward, but the quality and price are among the better of similar products.

This set of plant pots look great as a trio. The brushed brass pots are a good size, and deep enough to accommodate tall plants. Better used indoors than out, these decorative pots bring a luxurious touch to the conservatory or living room. The wood stand is solid, has a good finish and makes a striking contrast to metal. The largest costs £120 and is 35cm high.

The industrial-looking Serax Marie trolley is made from metal coated in a deep green finish. The bottom shelf has a good height for allowing smaller plants room to grow. This piece comes at a price, but consider it much more than a plant stand – wire shelves can hold trays for books, ornaments or drinks. The castors are practical, meaning you can easily wheel plants in and out.

Slim iron legs give these plant stands a modern look. They come in two sizes (50cm and 65cm high) and are great for plants with trailing leaves and flowers. The stands are designed to hold Ferm Living’s Hexagon pots (sold separately), which come in a range of sizes to help customise your arrangement. Large heavy pots can look out of balance with the thin legs.

6. Urban Outfitters Zoe Plant Stand: £200, Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters’ stepped plant stand makes a good bedside table too.  The iron frame has been finished in brass, and the two glass shelves have a decorative mottled effect. The shelves give a good capacity for placing lots of smaller plants and objects together into a neat display. The drawback here is that the quality of the Zoe stand doesn’t quite match up to the price.

Great for brightening up an underused corner of your home or garden, is this simple wooden stand from Ikea. Like most products from the Swedish superstore, it’s designed with compact urban living in mind, although the shelves are a little too small to house a good range of plants and other objects. It can be used indoors and out (with the right treatment).

8. Bloomingville Bamboo Tray Table: £319, Amara

Bloomingville’s three-tier table makes a great piece for showing off your plants and flowers. It’s on four castors for ultimate maneuverability indoors and out, and each bamboo tray has a generous 50cm diameter. The trays are removable, so you can do the messy work of re-potting out of the house. It’s expensive, but worth considering for quality and flexibility.

The mosaic top on this antique-style stand brings a touch of the Mediterranean to the garden. Its metal construction makes it heavy enough for windy weather outdoors, but it could also be used in the hallway or living room too. At 54cm high, it’s smaller than it looks online, but is quite a decent size for the price. Delivery is free for orders over £40.

Habitat’s simple metal table folds away easily, and at 66cm high makes a good plant stand if you are looking for height. It’s light and versatile to have around the house for other uses, and has a hook for carrying and stacking away neatly. The powder-coated metal surface is easily wiped clean. It comes in a choice of blue, white, black or grey. This table isn’t for outdoor use.

The Verdict: Plant stands

The grey plant stand from Mia Fleur is practical with a familiar rustic form. But the tasteful finish in grey paint makes it an elegant piece to have indoors too. It folds away, has practical shelves and lends itself to other uses too. The price is a good match for the quality.
