You’ve probably heard of vegetable boxes, but why not get your meat treats delivered to your door too? They’re a great way of ensuring meat traceability, as well as making sure you get really tasty, organic meat from top farms and butchers without having to travel for it. Whether you want a surprise box every week or month or a one-off box of steak or lamb, there’s something for everyone – and indeed every occasion, with BBQ boxes right through to bundles of roasting joints.
1. Farmison Monthly Meat Box: £45, Farmison
Changing monthly, this wide-ranging box contains a plethora of treats to keep you well fed for some time. Ours contained gammon, lamb chops, ribeye steaks, whole chicken, meatballs, steak and the best pork pies we’ve ever tasted. The beef and lamb is grass-fed and it specialises in rare breed meat, making for some fabulous flavours.
2. Rhug Organic Half Welsh Lamb: £93, Rhug
Rhug’s organic, farm-bred lambs graze clover rich pastures without any artificial fertiliser or spray, and they go to a local abattoir two miles up the road to reduce any stress – all of which produces exceptional quality meat that supplies many top restaurants. Cuts include leg, shoulder, chump steaks, loin chops, lamb and mint burgers and offal – and there’s a bigger, whole lamb box available too.
3. Abel and Cole Marvellous Meat Box: £14, Abel and Cole
This company is better known for vegetable boxes, but its meat boxes are every bit as good, thanks to the high welfare, traceable and seasonal meat. This box, which serves one to three people for seven days, changes weekly and costs only fractionally more than supermarkets, yet is so much more tender and tasty. Bigger boxes are also available.
4. Field & Flower The Pork Box: £80, Field & Flower
The sausages alone are worth the investment in this comprehensive box that celebrates all things pork. Other succulent highlights include the pork loin roasting joint, sliced ham, pork tenderloin, chorizo, bacon and pork belly boned and rolled – and that’s just the start. Make sure you have plenty of freezer space.
5. Purton House Organics Organic Mixed Meat Bundle: £25, Farmdrop
Feed the whole family with this weekly, ever-changing box. It includes quality, organic, preservative-free cuts from grass-fed herds of West Sussex cross cattle, Gloucester Old Spot pigs and Wiltshire-sourced lamb. We found it all flavoursome and succulent – a world away from cheap supermarket offerings.
6. HG Walter Steak Box: £100, HG Walter
One for Steak lovers here. This grass-fed, 30-day aged, melt-in-the-mouth beef, which is reared on the Ayrshire coast, is wonderful and includes all the classics – sirloin, ribeye, rump, fillet, burgers, cote de beouf, marrow bones and even a fabulous béarnaise sauce.
7. Donald Russell Mini Roast Trio: £42, Donald Russell
Donald Russell has a royal warrant, and with very good reason. These three mini-roasts of rump beef, saddle of lamb and pork loin – all of which arrive frozen and feed two to three people each – are so packed with flavour that they smell and taste fit for a king. The texture is unmatched and they don’t take long to cook.
8. Eversfield Organic BBQ Box: £40, Eversfield Organic
This organic Devon farm has just about every kind of meat box you can imagine, but this is our favourite, containing delicious meat for a barbecue with a difference. There are spicy chicken wings, beef burgers, sauces, kebab cubes, drumsticks and burgers. It’s a good excuse to invite all the neighbours round.
9. Well Hung Household Staples: £120, Well Hung Meat
This award-winning company ticks every box for sustainable, ethical, organic farming, with methods that maximise the flavour of the meat. This box is full of everything you need, whether you’re slow cooking casseroles, making a morning fry-ups or crafting a Sunday roast.
10. Riverford Quick and Easy Meatbox: £33, Riverford
No time to cook? This meat box, which changes contents each week, is aimed specifically at busy, time-poor people who want delectable meaty meals on their plate quickly. Our box contained skinless chicken breast fillets, lamb chops, pork and leek sausages, steak and mince – great for grilled dinners, stir-fries, speedy curries and more.
Verdict
We didn’t have one cut of meat from these boxes that wasn’t flavoursome, so no disappointments here at all. But forced to pick two favourites, we’d go for Rhug, thanks to its unforgettable lamb, and Farmison for outstanding value.
