Melora Walters and Tracy Letts in Porn (1994)

The Lovers opens in limited release on Friday, May 5.

The Plot: A long-married, dispassionate couple are both in the midst of serious affairs. But on the brink of calling it quits, a spark between them suddenly reignites, leading them into an impulsive romance.

The Buzz: One of the more intriguing premises of the season (and easily one of the best trailers as well) finds Azazel Jacobs, who directed the underrated HBO series "Doll & Em," partnering with A24, the hottest indie studio around. And the cast? Superb.

Richard Gere, Laura Linney, Steve Coogan, and Rebecca Hall in The Dinner (2017)

The Dinner opens in limited release on Friday, May 5.

The Plot: Two couples engage in a fierce showdown over the course of an ornately prepared meal at a fancy restaurant as they wrestle with, among other things, whether or not to protect the identities of their respective sons, a pair of 16-year-olds who have shocked the country with a horrible crime they committed.

The Buzz: Provocateur Oren Moverman is back behind the camera with his adaptation of Herman Koch's novel, which has sharply divided critics since its debut at the Berlin International Film Festival (where it was nominated for the Golden Bear for Best Film).

Elle Fanning in 3 Generations (2015)

3 Generations opens in limited release on Friday, May 5.

The Plot: After Ray decides to transition from female to male, his mother, Maggie, must come to terms with the decision while tracking down Ray's biological father to get his legal consent.

The Buzz: Formerly titled About Ray, it seems the title to this transgender drama was changed perhaps to take advantage of Susan Sarandon's "Feud" moment. The updated trailer reveals more of the dynamic between Sarandon, Naomi Watts and Elle Fanning's characters.

Chris Burden in Burden (2016)

Burden opens in limited release on Friday, May 5.

The Plot: A probing portrait of Chris Burden, an artist who took creative expression to the limits and risked his life in the name of art.

The Buzz: Much of the conversation about Chris Burden, who passed away two years ago this May, and his work is centered around his early career where he placed himself in danger in each of his performance pieces and installations. Undoubtedly this documentary will provide plenty of that footage but it looks to also focus on his later work, where he became equally known for his sculpture.

Mr. Chibbs opens in limited release on Wednesday, May 5.

The Plot: An observational documentary that follows NBA All-Star Kenny Anderson, in the midst of a mid life crisis and on a journey to find himself 10 years post retirement. Everything came easy, but when he lost it all, he had to figure out who he was minus his famous handle.

The Buzz: Jill Campbell observes NBA legend Kenny Anderson at a crossroads in his post-hoops life and career. This could be one of those documentaries that catches serious word of mouth.

Charlie Hunnam in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword opens Friday, May 12.

The Plot: Robbed of his birthright, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy - whether he likes it or not.

The Buzz: Guy Ritchie gave Sherlock Holmes his makeover, and now he's out to do the same for the swords and sandals genre. Anything it takes to mint Charlie Hunnam as a bona fide movie star is fine by us. Plus, we're hoping Jude Law taps into his "Young Pope" outrageousness to become villain of the year.

Snatched opens Friday, May 12.

The Plot: After her boyfriend dumps her on the eve of their exotic vacation, Emily persuades her ultra-cautious mother Linda to travel with her. Soon after they landed in paradise, however, they find themselves kidnapped and thrust into an adventure where they realize that working through their differences as mother and daughter is the only way to escape.

The Buzz: Amy Schumer returns two summers after Trainwreck with Goldie Hawn as her movie mom in one of the most unlikely (and welcome) on-screen pairings of the year, with a screenplay by Kate Dippold (The Heat/Ghostbusters) and Jonathan Levine (Warm Bodies/The Night Before) at the helm.

The Buzz: This look at Mexican-American youth culture in Los Angeles has an 8 Mile feel to it as super-producer Jason Blum takes a moment away from cranking out micro-budget horror movies to see how he fares in a different genre.

The Buzz: Eleanor Coppola makes her feature directorial debut with this romantic comedy starring Diane Lane and Alec Baldwin, 25 years after making an Emmy Award-winning documentary about husband Francis Ford Coppola’s epic, Apocalypse Now.

John Cena and Aaron Taylor-Johnson in The Wall (2017)

The Wall opens in limited release on Friday, May 12.

The Plot: Two American soldiers are pinned down by an Iraqi sniper, with nothing but a crumbling wall between them. Their fight becomes as much a battle of will and wits as it is of lethally accurate marksmanship.

The Buzz: Director Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) returns with this war film, the first ever original spec script bought by Amazon Studios. It first appeared on the 2014 Black List of hot un-produced screenplays. Impressively, Liman shot the picture in six weeks.

Meri Pyaari Bindu opens on Friday, May 12.

The Plot: In an attempt to deal with his writer's block, Abhimanyu returns to Kolkata reminisce about Bindu and create an old fashioned love story. Fueled by an old mixtape the estranged lovers used to listen to together, Abhi waltzes in and out of his past and present as the story seems to write itself.

The Buzz: Though India movie fans are fixated on Baahubali 2, this breezy summer romance stands the chance of becoming a hit thanks as co-star Parineeti Chopra looks to stage a comeback after a couple disappointing movies.

The Wedding Plan opens in limited release on Friday, May 12.

The Plot: At 32, Michal is finally looking forward to the comfort and security of marriage, when she is blindsided by her fiancé's decision to call off the wedding with only a month's notice. Unwilling to return to lonely single life, Michal decides to put her trust in fate and continue with her wedding plans, believing Mr. Right will appear by her chosen date.

The Buzz: Israeli-American director Rama Burshtein follows her award-winning debut, Fill the Void, with this Bridget Jones-style comedy set in the orthodox Jewish community.

The Plot: Five top bodybuilding and fitness megastars work to achieve the ultimate physique and take it to the next extreme level. In the world of social media and the internet, the rules have changed as to what makes an iconic bodybuilding mass-monster.

The Buzz: he generation of bodybuilders coming up after Pumping Iron get a second documentary from director Vlad Yudin after the breakout success of Generation Iron in 2013/14. As you might expect, the stardom that can be found online via social media is pushed toward the front of the story.

Alien: Covenant opens Friday, May 19.

The Plot: The crew of the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy, discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise. When they uncover a threat beyond their imagination, they must attempt a harrowing escape.

The Buzz: Ridley Scott wants to put Prometheus haters in their place and through their paces with Alien: Covenant's hard-R gore and a story that leads right up to his original masterpiece.

The Buzz: Disney's promotional campaign for the long-in-the-works fifth POTC outing has kept the focus on Javier Bardem's Captain Salazar and his ghost crew who are out to wipe out all pirates - especially Captain Jack Sparrow. With nods back to the original movie and plenty of inventiveness to be found in the trailers, this could be the most welcome sequel of the season.

The Buzz: 20th Century Fox, which has made a quiet fortune on its Wimpy Kid movies, will undoubtedly apply some of the same formula to its plans for the elementary-school universe created by Dav Pilkey. For CU die-hards: There're no plans for a Dog-Man spin-off at the moment.

The Mummy opens Friday, June 9.

The Plot: Though safely entombed in a crypt deep beneath the unforgiving desert, an ancient princess, whose destiny was unjustly taken from her, is awakened in our current day bringing with her malevolence grown over millennia, and terrors that defy human comprehension.

The Buzz: As the summer movie season kicked into gear, Universal unveiled their Dark Universe, a shared universe of action-adventure/horror films based on their classic monster characters. If their casting decisions remain as exciting as the thought of Sofia Boutella playing the ancient princess Ahmanet, we imagine audiences will welcome back The Bride of Frankenstein (coming February 2019 from director Bill Condon) and all the reintroductions to come.

Beatriz at Dinner opens Friday, June 9.

The Plot: Beatriz, an immigrant from a poor town in Mexico, has drawn on her innate kindness to build a career as a health practitioner in Los Angeles. Doug Strutt is a cutthroat, self-satisfied billionaire. When these two opposites meet at a dinner party, their worlds collide and neither will ever be the same.

The Buzz: This time last year we never would have guessed that one of the biggest summer-movie showdowns of 2017 would find Salma Hayek pitted against John Lithgow as they sit down to supper. Hayek might have a career-best performance in this race- and class-conscious comedy from writer Mike White and director Miguel Arteta.

The Hero opens Friday, June 9.

The Plot: Lee Hayden is an aging Western icon, but his best performances are decades behind him. He spends his days reliving old glories and smoking too much weed with his former-co-star-turned-dealer, until a surprise cancer diagnosis brings his priorities into sharp focus.

The Buzz: Brett Haley had a breakout hit in 2015 with I'll See You in My Dreams, and his new film follows a similar path as Sam Elliott (who had a key role in Dreams) faces issues of aging and mortality in his personal and professional life. Based on the film's Sundance reception, Haley could have another sleeper hit this year.

I Love You Both opens Friday, June 9.

The Plot: Krystal and her twin brother/roommate confront twenty-eight years of their codependency when they start dating the same guy.

The Buzz: Siblings Doug and Kristin Archibald have gained attention a bit of attention co-writing and starring in this comedy that takes the focus off of romance and places it on what's happening between these twins. Maybe we've just read too many thinkpieces on the end of "Girls," but these two seem like they could have been outlaying character in that particular universe (though they seem a lot nicer and more respectful than anyone on that show).

Night School (2016)

Night School opens in limited release on Friday, June 9.

The Plot: A documentary that follows three student determined to graduate from their high school in Indianapolis despite the fact that the institution has one of the lowest graduation rates in the country.

The Buzz: Indie studio Oscilloscope Laboratories, which is rapidly become a home for some of the finest documentaries available, offers this look at determination in the face of a crumbling education system. Fans of Frederick Wiseman might want to take note.

Cars 3 opens Friday, June 16.

The Plot: Blindsided by a new generation of racers, Lightning McQueen is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of a young race technician with her own plan to win, inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet, and a few unexpected turns.

The Buzz: Cars has always been Pixar's cutesy merchandising cash cow, but the franchise's tone looks to be changing up for this third time around the race track since the movie's first look teased a life-changing accident that befalls Lightning McQueen.

All Eyez on Me opens Friday, June 16.

The Plot: From his early days in New York City to his evolution into being one of the world's most recognized and influential voices before his untimely death at the age of 25, experience the true and untold story of prolific rapper, actor, poet and activist Tupac Shakur.

The Buzz: Litigation between this project's main production company and Tupac's mother, Afeni Shakur, held up filming since 2011. But it looks like the drama helped director Benny Boom and co. create a realistic portrayal of the struggles and triumphs faced by the eternally influential rapper and poet.

47 Meters Down opens Friday, June 16.

The Plot: In 17th Century Amsterdam, an orphaned girl is forcibly married to a rich and powerful merchant. After her husband commissions a portrait, she begins a passionate affair with the painter. Seeking to escape the merchant's ever-reaching grasp, the lovers risk everything and enter the frenzied tulip bulb market, with the hope that the right bulb will make a fortune and buy their freedom.

The Buzz: Justin Chadwick's movies (Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom/The Other Boleyn Girl) always have an awards sheen and his latest once enjoyed a plum, Oscar-baiting release date. But the tulip mania didn't last at the Weinstein Company, which quietly re-potted the movie at the very end of the summer season. Still, what a cast!

The Buzz: Two features films in, writer/director Eliza Hittman is earning comparisons to Claire Denis and backing herself with admirable crew members such as cinematographer Hélène Louvart to tell her stories of youthful abandon. Underneath this seemingly standard coming-out narrative is Hittman's desire to frame pivotal moments in the lives of her young characters in a distinctive manner. Critics and festival audiences alike have tagged her as a director of note.
