The Lovers opens in limited release on Friday, May 5.

The Plot: A long-married, dispassionate couple are both in the midst of serious affairs. But on the brink of calling it quits, a spark between them suddenly reignites, leading them into an impulsive romance.

The Buzz: One of the more intriguing premises of the season (and easily one of the best trailers as well) finds Azazel Jacobs, who directed the underrated HBO series "Doll & Em," partnering with A24, the hottest indie studio around. And the cast? Superb.

The Dinner opens in limited release on Friday, May 5.

The Plot: Two couples engage in a fierce showdown over the course of an ornately prepared meal at a fancy restaurant as they wrestle with, among other things, whether or not to protect the identities of their respective sons, a pair of 16-year-olds who have shocked the country with a horrible crime they committed.

The Buzz: Provocateur Oren Moverman is back behind the camera with his adaptation of Herman Koch's novel, which has sharply divided critics since its debut at the Berlin International Film Festival (where it was nominated for the Golden Bear for Best Film).

3 Generations opens in limited release on Friday, May 5.

The Plot: After Ray decides to transition from female to male, his mother, Maggie, must come to terms with the decision while tracking down Ray's biological father to get his legal consent.

The Buzz: Formerly titled About Ray, it seems the title to this transgender drama was changed perhaps to take advantage of Susan Sarandon's "Feud" moment. The updated trailer reveals more of the dynamic between Sarandon, Naomi Watts and Elle Fanning's characters.

Burden opens in limited release on Friday, May 5.

The Plot: A probing portrait of Chris Burden, an artist who took creative expression to the limits and risked his life in the name of art.

The Buzz: Much of the conversation about Chris Burden, who passed away two years ago this May, and his work is centered around his early career where he placed himself in danger in each of his performance pieces and installations. Undoubtedly this documentary will provide plenty of that footage but it looks to also focus on his later work, where he became equally known for his sculpture.

The Buzz: Jill Campbell observes NBA legend Kenny Anderson at a crossroads in his post-hoops life and career. This could be one of those documentaries that catches serious word of mouth.

The Buzz: Guy Ritchie gave Sherlock Holmes his makeover, and now he's out to do the same for the swords and sandals genre. The Buzz: Brett Haley had a breakout hit in 2015 with I'll See You in My Dreams, and his new film follows a similar path as Sam Elliott (who had a key role in Dreams) faces issues of aging and mortality in his personal and professional life. The Buzz: Siblings Doug and Kristin Archibald have gained attention a bit of attention co-writing and starring in this comedy that takes the focus off of romance and places it on what's happening between these twins. Maybe we've just read too many thinkpieces on the end of "Girls," but these two seem like they could have been outlaying character in that particular universe (though they seem a lot nicer and more respectful than anyone on that show).
