Chief of Staff

Sarah Wiley is the Acting Chief of Staff for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  In this position, she resolves issues that cross organizational lines, coordinates decision-making processes, and ensures that CDC focuses on its highest priority initiatives.

Before assuming this role, Ms. Wiley was Senior Advisor in the Office of Infectious Diseases (OID), CDC.  In this position, she worked closely with the  Deputy Director for Infectious Diseases, the leadership of CDC’s three infectious disease national centers, and other internal and external partners to lead, promote, and facilitate science, programs, and policies to reduce the burden of infectious diseases in the United States and globally. She played a key role in OID- and CDC-wide improvements to laboratory safety practices, including serving as Designated Federal Officer for the agency’s external Laboratory Safety Workgroup of the Advisory Committee to the Director, CDC.

Prior to the establishment of OID in 2010, Ms. Wiley worked for 13 years in CDC’s infectious disease policy arena, including as Associate Director for Policy, Planning, and Legislation in the National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID) from 2004-2006 and as Associate Director for Policy in the National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-borne, and Enteric Diseases from 2006-2009, where she provided leadership, guidance, and oversight for infectious disease policy initiatives, significant issues, and legislative and strategic priorities.

Ms. Wiley began her career at CDC in 1990 in NCID’s Hematologic Diseases Branch, first as a data manager and then as program manager for HIV prevention programs for persons with hemophilia and their families and partners.  She has a BS degree in mathematics from Furman University and an MPH degree in public health policy from Emory University.
