My Oregon A public blog to share your ideas. Note: Not all submissions will be published. A mean-spirited raid on Medicaid recipients (Letter to the editor)

Secretary of State Dennis Richardson

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 22, 2017, 10:00AM
Secretary of State Dennis Richardson shouldn't accuse the people of Oregon of stealing essential and necessary health care benefits. Health care to one Oregonian benefits all Oregonians. Health care is a human right. Why is the extraction of exorbitant profits at every point in the health care supply chain not the focus of Richardson's probe ("Secretary of State: Oregon... Full story »

Principal who quit owned up to his error (Letter to the editor)

thumbnail_David_Wood.jpg

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 22, 2017, 8:00AM
David Wood did it right.  The former principal of Access Academy admitted his mistake and offered to resign ("Portland principal who abruptly quit was under investigation for forging teacher evaluations," May 19).  I wish more people at the federal level would follow his example.  If you goof up, take responsibility and accept the natural consequences.  That's what we hope to... Full story »

Stacked against Trump from the start ... (Letter to the editor)

Donald Trump

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 21, 2017, 12:00PM
It's amazing how many times during the Obama administration a special counsel should have been appointed. But none was, and here we are with no crime or evidence, and one is appointed. Talk about the door not swinging both ways! The big question is: When Robert Mueller comes back with findings that exonerate President Trump, will The New York Times,... Full story »

Masks on protesters evading cops should be deemed illegal (Letter to the editor)

Portland May Day Rally 2017

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 21, 2017, 10:00AM
In recent demonstrations in downtown Portland, some people have been seen with their faces covered, or wearing other disguises.  I can see no reason that they would do that, other than to hide their identities while committing illegal acts. Oregon should pass a law forbidding the covering one's face in public if it is done to evade police. California... Full story »

Wheeler gets it right in police chief search (Letter to the editor)

Ted Wheeler

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 21, 2017, 8:00AM
I'm writing in response to Rev. Charles Heath's letter to the editor ("Top cop's job description is so much pandering by Portland's mayor," May 19). Simply "acknowledging" that Oregon has a racist history, and that it extends to the current day, especially within our police department, is not "making it sound like we're holding weekly Klan rallies in Pioneer... Full story »

On a downward spiral with Trump (Letters to the editor)

Donald Trump

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 20, 2017, 10:00AM
President Trump has shut off all useful intelligence from other nations.  What intelligence service would provide data to the U.S. knowing it will be funneled to Russia? Angus McCamant, Aloha How in the world can the American people have any respect for what has been happening since the presidential election?  President Trump has been hell-bent to destroy everything President... Full story »

The state budget's a mess. Time to fix it (Letter to the editor)

May Day Protests

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 20, 2017, 8:00AM
State economists forecast revenue in next budget cycle will be at an all-time high of $21 billion. The Oregon Health Authority discloses that it has no idea whether or not 115,000 Medicaid recipients qualify for millions of dollars of benefits they are receiving. Fast forward to the Oregon's SNAP (food stamp) statistics: our Department of Human Services continues to... Full story »

Top cop's job description is so much pandering by Portland's mayor (Letters to the editor)

Ted Wheeler

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 19, 2017, 10:00AM
Thank you to Portland Police Association President Daryl Turner for objecting to the Mayor Ted Wheeler's job description for a new police chief. The required qualification "to protect and serve" should be it - without references to past injustices committed, often, against minorities. Police should protect citizens against those who commit crime, no matter what their race, gender or... Full story »

HOT BUTTON responses: James Comey's firing is deeply disturbing (Letters to the editor)

James Comey

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 19, 2017, 8:00AM
Last week's events were extremely consequential for our country. We are in a very dangerous place of sliding into authoritarianism. The firing of the FBI director is an egregious offense by the Trump administration. The following actions are the first steps Congress can take to stabilize this situation: 1)   Hold all business in Congress until a special counsel to... Full story »

Use of force by Portland police needs close review (Letter to editor)

Portland May Day Rally 2017

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 18, 2017, 10:00AM
When Mayor Ted Wheeler begins interviewing for a new police chief, the most urgent questions he must ask potential candidates is what their views are on use of force and whether they will fight the union to develop better use-of-force guidelines. Research has shown that strong guidelines reduce unnecessary killing of civilians by police. We also need to be... Full story »

Mounted patrols are peace-keeping (Letter to the editor)

2016 Grand Floral Parade

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 18, 2017, 8:00AM
A mounted patrol is necessary in Portland. In 2014, Washington State University found youth who worked with horses experienced a reduction in stress. People don't have to interact with horses, just be near them. Other studies have continued to align reduced stress in humans with being around horses. This is one reason why horses are an effective peace-keeping tool.... Full story »

Portland traffic has gotten ridiculous (Letter to the editor)

Work continues on closed Sellwood Bridge to connect new east-side approach

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 17, 2017, 12:00PM
I have lived in Portland my entire life and on the east side of town since 2007.  The traffic is horrible. My four-mile commute from Eastmoreland to Old Town, in downtown, took 1.5 hours.  Most of the time was spent on East Burnside Street between Southeast 11th Avenue and the entrance to the Burnside Bridge.  With the Morrison Bridge... Full story »

My pre-existing condition? Cancer (Letter to the editor)

ACA Exchanges Insurers Exit

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 17, 2017, 10:00AM
I have survived cancer twice and one medical bankruptcy.  Without an improved Obamacare, I might not be able to survive cancer again if there is a next time. Without affordable health care, I will very likely have to declare bankruptcy again and lose my home.  I am retired and have worked very hard to get this far.  We all need... Full story »

Unfair treatment of anarchists (Letter to the editor)

Portland May Day Rally 2017

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 17, 2017, 8:00AM
The Oregonian's reporting regarding May Day is disgusting ("Portland must be done with punk fascists," May 5). It is no one's job or responsibility to educate you or explain the use of black bloc tactics. May 1 is a holiday celebrating anarchist martyrs who died for YOUR rights as workers. The attempt at discrediting anarchists as somehow "illegitimate" protesters is... Full story »

Health care coverage must be safeguarded (Letters to the editor)

Paul Ryan

By Letters to the editor OregonLive.com

May 16, 2017, 10:00AM
If passed, the new health care bill would eliminate coverage for millions by making it unaffordable for many as well as the elimination of coverage for pre-existing conditions. The only people who would seem to benefit are the rich. We the people must do everything in our power to make sure that our interests are protected. Katherine Wright, West... Full story »
