The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2017 Top 20 university for teaching quality

Our ecosystem is an intelligent force that has sustained its own existence since the beginning of time. However, despite global efforts to promote coexistence, its natural balance has been disturbed by human progress. Discover how you can apply your passion to protect it.

Our undergraduate zoology and biology courses offer high-quality teaching, first-rate facilities, access to cutting-edge research and exciting real world opportunities. Fieldwork is a vital part of our courses; past students have travelled to Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, Mallorca and the Maldives to explore natural environments.

"One of the best decisions I've ever made"

Arthropods

"One of the things I really liked about Derby was that in my second and third years I was able to choose which modules I wanted to take, meaning I could focus on what interested me most. I particularly enjoyed my third year independent study module where I was able to design my own research project. I am now studying my PhD. I would never have made it this far were it not for the help and encouragement I received. Choosing to study here has been one of the best decisions I've ever made."

Partnerships

Our partnerships with organisations such as Sea Life, Derby Museums, Royal Derby Hospital, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust and Twycross Zoo give you great opportunities for relevant work experience and internships. You’ll also have the opportunity, on a competitive basis, to help with our teaching team’s research.

Expert Teaching Team

You’ll be taught by a highly qualified team who are supportive, friendly and approachable - keen to pass their knowledge on to you. They include active international researchers whose work is shaping debates in areas including ecology, entomology and biodiversity.

Specialist Facilities

Our modern and well-equipped facilities include a Class ll containment suite to grow and manipulate bacteria and viruses, an insectary, brand new Aquatic Research Facility, and glasshouse.

BSc (Hons) Biology and BSc (Hons) Zoology are accredited by the Royal Society of Biology

The Royal Society only accredits degrees that offer students a solid academic foundation in subject knowledge, technical abilities and transferable skills. This means that, when you graduate, you’ll meet the requirements for Associate Membership of the Society (AMSB). Following appropriate professional experience, you can then apply for full membership, which is widely recognised throughout the industry and by potential employers.

BSc (Hons) Biology and BSc (Hons) Zoology are Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management accredited degree pathways

CIEEM accredited pathway status reflects the quality of our degrees and ensures our graduates have the underpinning knowledge and practical skills required by employers in the sector. The CIEEM accredited pathways require certain modules to be taken and passed, and graduates who do this are able to gain graduate membership of the organisation which then permits them to use the post-nominal letters “GradCIEEM”.
