Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will be the first Hollywood feature to be released in the U.S. for the new panorama-like ScreenX format.

Recently launched ScreenX is a multi-projector, 270-degree cinema system from Seoul-headquartered CJ 4DPlex (the company behind the 4DX 4D cinema system). According to CJ, the new installment of Pirates is scheduled to play at 83 ScreenX locations around the world, including two in the U.S., CGV Buena Park and CGV Cinemas LA, both in California. The additional 81 screens are at select theaters in Korea, China, Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey and Indonesia.

To create the 270-degree versions of ScreenX releases, a ScreenX creative team uses CGI and footage provided by the studio. In the case of Pirates, select sequences of the film were converted to the widescreen format (not the entire film).

“ScreenX is an exciting format that we’ve been keeping our eyes on for a while now. We’re looking forward to providing moviegoers a chance to view our film in the format and are confident that the immersive 270-degree viewing experience will be a big success,” said Jeffrey Forman, senior vp, The Walt Disney Studios.

Incidentally, Jerry Bruckheimer is on the advisory board for Barco's Escape, another emerging panoramic tri-screen system, though Escape has not announced plans to release Pirates 5 in the format.

Pirates 5 will also play in 4D on 373 4DX screens worldwide, CJ reported.
