In our showdown featuring Marvel First Sequels you can see the average second weekend drop for the four other films on the list is 57.4%, an average that would have Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 delivering over $62 million this weekend. The best hold among those comparisons belonged to Captain America: Winter »

Jesse Eisenberg, Pierce Brosnan, Vanessa Redgrave to star in 'The Medusa'

15 hours ago | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

Exclusive: Fortitude International to launch sales in Cannes.

Fortitude International will introduce international buyers in Cannes to The Medusa starring Jesse Eisenberg, Pierce Brosnan and Vanessa Redgrave.

Peter Webber will direct his second film based on a renowned work of art after 2003’s Girl With A Pearl Earring, named after the painting by 17th century Dutch master Johannes Vermeer.

The Medusa stars Eisenberg as Theodore Gericault, the early 19th century pioneer of the French Romantic movement whose masterpiece The Raft Of The Medusa was inspired by the sinking of a French frigate.

Survivors of the wreck spoke of incompetence and cannibalism and the painting stirred anti-royalist sentiment at the time of King Louis Xviii’s rule.

Brosnan will portray Gericault’s uncle Caruel, the artist’s nemesis who is hell-bent on ruining him, while Redgrave plays the painter’s anti-royalist innkeeper.

Sophia Al-Maria adapted the screenplay from Jonathan Miles’s book The Wreck Of The Medusa.

‘Wonder Woman’ on Track to Lasso $105 Million-Plus Debut – Will It Be Enough to Lift DC Films?

16 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Early tracking numbers have come in for one of the most anticipated titles of the summer: Warner Bros. and DC Films’ “Wonder Woman,” due in theaters on June 2. Following poor reviews and suboptimal box office results for “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Suicide Squad” last year, fans and WB studio execs alike are hoping that the Patty Jenkins’ film will serve as a course correction for the DC Extended Universe, and first signs look positive as independent trackers expect an opening between $105-115 million. Though an opening in that range would be less than the $166 million opening »

Tomcat review – too much pussyfooting around

52 minutes ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

The harrowing death of a pet cat marks the turning point in this psychological drama, but it’s hard to care about the bereaved owners

Dangerously flirting with stereotypes perpetuated by the media and Austrian arthouse cinema itself, this Vienna-set film explores how brutal, inexplicable violence may lurk beneath the surface of even the most idyllic, hyper-bourgeois lifestyle.

Orchestral administrator Andreas (Philipp Hochmair) and his partner, French-horn player Stefan (Lukas Turtur), live and work together in seemingly perfect harmony. In their beautiful, light-filled home, they regularly entertain friends with delicious meals, make tender, playful love to jazz music, and caper about naked, occasionally pausing to caress and cuddle their handsome tabby cat Moses, who chose to live with them some time ago. More fool, Moses.

40 years of Stars Wars – why the blockbuster saga is a galactic soap opera

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

With an evil father, a love triangle and a servant class, the George Lucas universe is full of melodramatic tropes – and there’s no sign that the storylines are running out

How far has Star Wars penetrated our culture, our language, our frames of reference? The president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, reportedly dismissed Theresa May as someone who is “on a different galaxy” when it comes to Brexit negotiations. Well, yes, although exactly how far, far away remains to be seen. That was an easy pop-culture trope to reach for – and I like to think that Jean-Claude had in the back of his mind the free trade and tax dispute that begins The Phantom Menace – although Theresa and Jean-Claude each see their adversaries as Darth Vader, presiding over an evil and superannuated empire, always likely to strike back against righteous resistance.
