This week a decision was filed in the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands in the case of Joseph v. Virgin Islands, CV No. ST-11-CV-419, stating that the government of the United States Virgin Islands can be sued under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (“USERRA”).

The more you know, the safer you will be. That axiom is certainly true for campuses that are working to prevent and reduce sexual assault. When campus communities know more about the many interconnected aspects of sexual assault, the safer their campus will be.

Supreme Court Rules That Bankruptcy Courts Must Follow Priority of Payment Rules Established by Congress in the Bankruptcy Code

The United States Trustee Program (USTP) within the Department of Justice (DOJ) was established as the “watchdog” of the bankruptcy system. Among our duties is to ensure that all parties follow the rules set out by Congress in the Bankruptcy Code. The recent United States Supreme Court decision in Czyzewski v. Jevic Holding Corp., et al., No. 15-649 (U.S. Mar. 22, 2017), helps illustrate why those rules are so important.

ENRD Marks National Park Week and Earth Day with Project at Meridian Hill Park

Today, at Meridian Hill Park in Washington, D.C., employees of the Environment and Natural Resources Division joined Washington Parks & People to plant trees, remove trash and invasive species, and spruce up the Josephine Butler Park Center. Continuing an ENRD tradition, it was the 14th consecutive year the Division’s staff have recognized Earth Day with local public service. Jeff Wood, Acting Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division, opened the event. Following below are his remarks as prepared for delivery:

Agencies Began Posting Their 2017 Chief FOIA Officer Reports During Sunshine Week

Last week the Department of Justice released its 2017 Chief FOIA Officer Report and agencies across the government began posting their reports as well. The 2017 Chief FOIA Officer Reports detail agency efforts to: apply a presumption of openness, ensure effective systems are in place to respond to requests, increase proactive disclosures, increase the utilization of technology, and improve timeliness and reduce backlogs.
