Your first weeks

You won't be on your own

Your first few weeks will be fast-paced and packed with new information and chances to socialise. You’ll be in a new city, trying to make sense of everything coming your way, surrounded by people you don’t know yet – but everybody around you is in the exact same situation.

That's why the University provides plenty of information and support to cover every aspect of your new student life once you've arrived.

Meet other new students

Before you start, come to some of our icebreaker events, where you can:

  • meet staff and current students
  • make friends with other students starting with you
  • get answers to any last-minute questions.

Welcome Weekend

Most first year students move into halls during Welcome Weekend, just before our current students arrive. To make it as easy as possible, most of you will move in on the Saturday – we’ll let you know in good time when you’ll need to arrive.

Get Ahead

If you have a disability, health condition, learning difficulty or mental illness, our Get Ahead programme will give you the best possible preparation for student life. It takes place on the Thursday and Friday before Welcome Weekend and includes workshops, tours and social events.

Enrolment and induction

You’ll usually enrol for your course online. Don’t worry if you’re not sure about anything or don’t know what modules you want to study, as we’ll be here to advise and support you.

When you’ve enrolled you’ll get your student ID card, which means you can use our facilities and services, as well as receive your student loan.

During your induction you’ll:

  • receive lots of information about your course
  • meet your lecturers and other students on your course
  • be able to talk to your programme leader about your module choices.
