Children’s experiences during their early years create the foundations of who they become. As they grow into young people, their environment, education and relationships will shape their lives.
Our childhood studies courses are designed to develop your understanding of how children develop, learn and think, from birth to age 19. You’ll discover the importance of identifying and meeting children’s needs, including supporting their emotional wellbeing and cognitive development.
You’ll enhance your learning through work placements, which will equip you with the skills and values sought after by employers. You’ll also have the chance to gain additional practical skills, in areas such as First Aid and Makaton (sign language).

Hana currently works as a children’s nurse after completing a graduate entry MSc in Children’s Nursing.
International Fieldtrips
If you study BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies or BA (Hons) Child and Youth Studies, you’ll have the chance to apply for a place on exciting international fieldtrips and the Go Places, Go Further Scheme. Previous students have visited Budapest and Milan.
Expert Teaching Team
Our expert childhood studies teaching team are from a range of backgrounds, including social work, psychology, children’s nursing, teaching and community work. They will share their experiences to help shape your understanding of childhood.
What our Working with Children and Young People graduates do
Career opportunities open to graduates include:
- nursery manager
- early years teacher
- family support worker
- play worker
- senior teaching assistant
You may also wish to undertake further training in the field of social work, or train as a teacher by completing a PGCE. Graduates have also gone on to train as children’s nurses by completing a shortened two-year paediatric nursing qualification.
