The Buzz: Smart move on Katherine Heigl's part to embrace her dark side on screen. If she's being super-savvy about her career moves at this point, maybe this script has a Fatal Attraction design that makes the audience feel a bit of empathy for Heigl's character, though we imagine most anyone who's interested in seeing this movie really wants to see how Rosario Dawson will dispose of her opponent.
Born in China (2016)- Documentary
Venturing into the wilds of China, "Born in China" captures intimate moments with a panda bear and her growing cub, a young golden monkey who feels displaced by his baby sister, and a mother snow leopard struggling to raise her two cubs.
Director:Chuan Lu |

The Buzz: Despite the advances of technology and global diplomacy that have bridged the divides among nations, China remains, for too many, an enigmatic and comparatively little understood part of the world. This title, the first such Chinese-made feature documentary for the Disneynature label, will undoubtedly delight viewers predisposed to a universal appreciation for nature and wildlife, in addition to helping demystify a country that is home to undeniably glorious species. Veteran director Chuan Lu sets his focus on a panda bear and her cub, a pair of sibling golden monkeys, and a heroic mother snow leopard. This, you can be sure, makes for essential Earth Day viewing. - Bret
Phoenix Forgotten (2017)- Horror | Mystery | Sci-Fi
20 years after three teenagers disappeared in the wake of mysterious lights appearing above Phoenix, Arizona, unseen footage from that night has been discovered, chronicling the final hours of their fateful expedition.
Director:Justin Barber |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: This found footage thriller has the backing of Ridley Scott and a solid screenwriter in T.S. Nowlin. Even though it works our nerves a bit with the three teenagers/Blair Witch set up, we're suckers for anything in the alien invasion/government conspiracy realm.
Free Fire (2016) - [Limited]- Action | Crime | Thriller
Set in Boston in 1978, a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two gangs turns into a shootout and a game of survival.
Director:Ben Wheatley |

The Buzz: An awesome cast, a whip-smart script, one location, and guns lots of guns. That's Free Fire in a nutshell, the story of an arms deal gone wrong that sparks a feature-length shootout. The line-up includes Brie Larson, Cillian Murphy, and Armie Hammer who fire just as many one-liners at each other as they do shots. Fans of director Ben Wheatley's work can also expect his trademark combination of stylish filmmaking and visceral violence. I was lucky enough to visit the set and saw one actor actually get his head run-over. Don't believe me? It's in the film and not a camera trick. Ask me nicely and I might tell you how they did it. - Michael
Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent (2016) - [Limited]- Documentary | Biography
Both a biopic of a complicated man and an exploration of the gathering forces that converged to shape a new American cuisine and create the cult of "celebrity chef"... A consummate hedonist, Jeremiah Tower's career spans the riotous sexual revolution of the 70's to the high rolling "greed-is-good" spirit of the '80s. Key interviews with celebrities & celebrity chefs cement Tower's influence on today's food culture and reveal how he transformed the restaurant industry and in the process changed the way we eat.
Director:Lydia Tenaglia |

The Buzz: I could likely spend the greater part of my waking life watching food-related documentaries -- thanks, in great part, to my fascination with the larger-than-life, salty-yet-so-sweet chefs who populate our culinary imaginations (not to mention our streaming playlists and cooking networks). The fact that personal hero and legitimate badass Anthony Bourdain has served as producer of this portrait of Tower, a titan among chefs well before the advent of our celebrity cooking culture, officially pathologizes my eagerness to learn more about a revered and little-understood cooking genius. There's little question this documentary will whet my viewing appetite. Only thing left to figure out? What to nosh and sip on when the lights go down. — Bret
Hymyilevä mies (2016) - [Limited]- Biography | Drama | Romance | Sport
The true story of Olli Mäki, the famous Finnish boxer who had a shot at the 1962 World Featherweight title.
Director:Juho Kuosmanen |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: This true story of a Finnish boxer who had a shot at the 1962 World Featherweight title just missed out being shortlisted for Oscar nomination and had been backed by critics since winning a major prize at last year's Cannes Film Festival. If you think you've seen it all before with boxing movies, think again and take the chance of seeing this black-and-white marvel on the big screen. - Michael
The Promise (2016) - [Limited]- Drama | History
Set during the last days of the Ottoman Empire, The Promise follows a love triangle between Michael, a brilliant medical student, the beautiful and sophisticated Ana, and Chris - a renowned American journalist based in Paris.
Director:Terry George |
|

The Buzz: Yet another example of "a warn-torn backdrop" that pushes a musty love triangle to the forefront, this time the Armenian Genocide gets marginalized in what appears to be a waste of one of the best casts of the year.
Leap! (2016) - [Limited]- Animation | Adventure | Comedy | Family | Musical
An orphan girl dreams of becoming a ballerina and flees her rural Brittany for Paris, where she passes for someone else and accedes to the position of pupil at the Grand Opera house.
|
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Hope some American girls will get in on this Parisian wish-fulfillment fantasy despite the fact that non-Hollywood animation tends to be so hard to market in the US.
Citizen Jane: Battle for the City (2016) - [Limited]- Documentary | Biography | History
Writer and urban activist Jane Jacobs fights to save historic New York City during the ruthless redevelopment era of urban planner Robert Moses in the 1960s.
Director:Matt Tyrnauer |
|
Watch Trailer |
The Buzz: Matt Tyrnauer, who offered up Valentino: The Last Emperor nearly a decade ago, returns with this story of the ideological battle between author and public spaces champion Jane Jacobs and developer Robert Moses, who is essentially responsible for turning Greenwich Village into the high-end shopping mall it is today.
