Amy Schumer Drops Out of ‘Barbie’ Movie (Exclusive)

6 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Amy Schumer has parted ways with Sony’s live-action “Barbie” over a scheduling conflict, Variety has learned.

“Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts,” the actress said in a statement to Variety. “The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

The big screen adaptation of Mattel’s iconic toy line was expected to start production this summer on June 23, but Schumer’s busy schedule includes a lengthy promotional tour for her new Fox comedy “Snatched,” which opens in May.

Sony, however, needed to stick to its June 29, 2018 release date as Mattel already has merchandise and product cycles in motion–shifting the production to accommodate Schumer would have put on a strain on other partners on the film, according to insiders.

In addition to Beauty and the Beast's second weekend, three new wide releases make their debut including Lionsgate's Power Rangers, Sony's R-rated sci-fi Life and WB's R-rated comedy CHiPs, all of which will have varying degrees of success as the top twelve should top a combined $180 million, making it the second largest weekend of the year. As of Wednesday, Disney's Beauty and the Beast has brought in $217.6 million domestically and another $244.3 million internationally. This »

New York Times: ‘Trump Misleads’ About Paper’s Coverage of Obama ‘Tapp’ Claim

36 minutes ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The New York Times tonight is pushing back — hard — against statements made by President Trump, in an interview with Time Magazine, that the paper’s coverage supports his repeatedly-disputed claim that he was under surveillance ordered personally by former President Barack Obama. Stating outright that “Trump Misleads,” The Times’ rebuttal doesn’t call the President a liar, as it has several times in recent months. But nonetheless the Gray Lady offered a scathing, point-by-point fact check of Trump’s assertions about the paper’s reporting. With “Beauty and the Beast” locking in the first $100+ million opening at the box office in 2017, it is expected to soon be joined by “The Fate of the Furious,” the eighth film in Universal’s unstoppable “Fast & Furious” franchise. Early trackers project an opening weekend for “Fate” somewhere between $110-120 million. If it exceeds those expectations — which it is likely to do given the star power of its lead men, Dwayne Johnson and Vin Diesel — it would find itself in the same ballpark as the $135 million opening that “Fast & Furious 6” made in 2013. Is Exiting NBC Executive the Fall Guy for Network’s Trump Forum ‘Disaster’?

Emmy-winning NBC News executive Mark Lukasiewicz stepped down this month because of an internal “purge” tied to NBC’s handling of the 2016 election — including the September “Commander in Chief Forum” where Matt Lauer was accused of taking it too easy on Donald Trump, a knowledgeable insider told TheWrap. Lukasiewicz strongly denied that is the case. In an email to TheWrap, he said his transition was “smooth and entirely amicable” and had nothing to do with his work executive producing the special — or dozens of other specials he has produced for NBC and MSNBC. Gorsuch Filibuster? This Might Be the Best Reason for Dems to Oppose Him

3 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

If Democrats need a reason to filibuster Neil Gorsuch’s Supreme Court nomination, they may have their best one in the Hobby Lobby decision. When it came down in 2014, many liberals criticized it for limiting women’s access to birth control. But it also had another, hidden effect: empowering people to use their religious beliefs as a basis for discrimination. Among the victims, so far, is a transgender woman whose firing was deemed legal under the law. As a federal appeals court judge, Gorsuch co-authored what many court watchers call one of the most radical pro-religious court decisions in recent history. »

Ryan Gosling Explains Why He Laughed During Oscars Best Picture Mix-Up

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Nearly a full month has passed since the 89th Academy Awards show committed what many have come to regard as one of the most egregious and high-profile faux pas in Oscars history: when “La La Land” was announced as best picture instead of the actual winner, “Moonlight.”

And yet, “La La Land” leading man and beloved Hollywood “nice guy,” Ryan Gosling, is only just now offering an explanation for his oddly blithe reaction to the best picture mix-up. Amid a legion of shock, bewilderment, and light chaos following the Academy’s correction, the camera panned to Gosling’s face as he erupted into a fit of laughter — picture that has since circulated the viral rounds of cyberspace.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gosling explained that his reaction (which might have otherwise been interpreted as some derivative of bitterness) was actually motivated by a surge of relief.
