Terms of Use

These electronic resources subscribed to by DCU Library may be used within the DCU network, or off-campus, by DCU registered staff and students only. They can also be used by bona fide walk-in users within the library.
Use of these resources is for the purpose of non-commercial DCU-related teaching, learning, research and administration work only. It is not permitted to facilitate database access to any other person(s) for any other purpose. Such use will breach licence terms and may leave the parties concerned, and/or users as defined above who facilitate such third party use, open to legal sanction. Systematic downloading or retention of information from databases using robots, spiders or manual means is not permitted. Where publishers suspect misuse in the form of systematic downloading they will cut off access to resources for the whole DCU community, thus depriving responsible users of access to material for their research and learning.  July 2013.

ACLS Humanities E-Book  
ACLS Humanities E-Book is a digital collection of 3,000 full text e-books from 250 publishers including most humanities disciplines.

ACM Digital Library  
Citations and full-text access to approximately 95% of all ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) journals, transactions, proceedings and newsletters.

American Chemical Society (ACS)   
Full-text access to all 53 peer-reviewed titles from the American Chemical Society. Includes archive access to all titles, some as far back as 1879 (Journal of the American Chemical Society).
Coverage: From 1st issue of 1st volume for each title except 'Chemical and Engineering News': 1998 onwards only.

American Institute of Physics (AIP)  
Full text access to 13 AIP journals focusing  on interdisciplinary and applied topics in physics, astronomy and related fields of science and technology.

American Mathematical Society (AMS)  
Full-text access to nine AMS journals.

American Medical Association (AMA)  
AMA Journals are among the most widely circulated family of peer-reviewed medical journals in the world. Each journal ranks among the top clinical journals in its respective field in terms of citations. Provides full text access to JAMA (Journal of American Medical Association) plus 9 speciality archives journals.

American Physical Society (APS)  
APS strives to 'advance and diffuse the knowledge of physics'. Provides full text access to the 8 APS journals with archival access to all APS titles as far back as 1893 through PROLA (Physical Reviews Online Archive).

American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)  
Full text access to 25 journals published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Analytical Abstracts
Formerly Analytical WebBase. Abstracts for over 3,000 journals in the field of analytical chemistry.
Coverage: 1980 - present.

Annual Reviews  
Authoritative, analytic reviews in 34 disciplines within the Biomedical, Physical, and Social Sciences. Annual Reviews saves you time by synthesising the vast amount of primary research literature and identifying the principal contributions in your field. Annual Reviews publications are among the highest cited publications by impact factor according to the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).

The Bibliography of British and Irish History provides bibliographic data on historical writing dealing with the British Isles, and with the British Empire and Commonwealth, during all periods for which written documentation is available - from 55BC to the present. BMJ   
Provides access to a wide range of medical journals, including BMJ, and covers a broad spectrum of medical specialities. All journals are peer reviewed and titles such as Thorax, Heart and Gut are leaders in their fields.

British Education Index  
The British Education Index provides information on research, policy and practice in education and training in the UK. Strengths include aspects of educational policy and administration, evaluation and assessment, technology and special educational needs. It covers all aspects of education from preschool to higher education. Sources include education and training journals, mostly published in the UK. Some international literature is included 

Business Source Complete (previously known as Business Source Premier) 
Full text access to over 3,500 journals covering accounting, economics, finance, international business and management. It also includes full-text books, company profiles, country economic reports, market research reports, trade journals and business magazines.

Cambridge Journals Online  
Full text access to over 260 peer-reviewed journals covering all the main subjects in the humanities, social sciences and hard sciences:  mathematics and applied science, neuroscience and biomedicine, history, language and linguistics, political science and international relations.

Campbell Library

The Campbell Library is part of the Campbell Collaboration. The Campbell Library consists of systematic reviews on the effects of interventions in the areas of education, crime and justice, social welfare and international development. 

Cell Press   
Full text access to 14 Cell Press titles including Cancer Cell, Cell, Cell Metabolism, Developmental Cell, Molecular Cell, Neuron and Structure.

CERL (Heritage of the Printed Book Database)
The HPB Database (previously called the Hand Press Book Database) is a steadily growing collection of files of catalogue records from major European and North American research libraries covering items of European printing of the hand-press period (c.1455-c.1830) integrated into one file.

CINAHL Complete
Indexing for approximately 3,000 journals from the fields of nursing and allied health.  In addition, this database offers access to health care books, nursing dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of practice, educational software, audiovisuals and book chapters. Cochrane Library
Part of the Cochrane Collaboration. The Cochrane Library is considered to be the prime source of evidence-based healthcare.  Contains Systematic Reviews, Controlled Trials Register and more.  This database is freely available to anyone on the island of Ireland.

Communication Abstracts
Comprehensive source of information about communication-related publications on a world-wide scale. Containing over 244,000 records, Communication Abstracts covers major journals in communication, mass media, and other closely-related fields of study to create research and reference resource that encompasses the breadth of communication discipline and depth encompasses the breadth of the communication discipline.

Communication and Mass Media Complete (CMMC)
Fulltext access to 308 comprehensive, top quality journals in areas related to communications and mass media studies. CMMC originated with the merging of CommSearch and Mass Media Articles Index. Includes thesaurus.

Compendex (EI Engineering Village)  
Compendex is a major interdisciplinary engineering database offering abstracts from 5,000 engineering journals, conference papers and  technical reports. Covers 175 disciplines and major specialities within these broad engineering areas: mechanical, civil, environmental, electrical, materials science, chemical, optics, solid state physics, control, and engineering management.

Datastream Advance  
A financial and economic information database covering financial instruments and indicators for over 140 countries and 60 markets. Available only on selected PCs in DCU - see user guide for details. Guide for DCU Users. 

Dictionary of Irish Biography 
The Dictionary of Irish Biography, a collaborative project between Cambridge University Press and the Royal Irish Academy, is the most comprehensive and authoritative biographical dictionary yet published for Ireland. It contains 9,014 signed biographical articles which describe and assess the careers of subjects in all fields of endeavour, including politics, law, religion, literature, journalism, architecture, painting, music, the stage, science, medicine, engineering, entertainment and sport.

Dissertation Abstracts  
Dissertations Abstracts is the largest single source of information about doctoral dissertations and master's theses available.  It contains over 2 million entries, ranging from the first U.S. dissertation accepted in 1861 to those just accepted.
You can now search our two theses & dissertations databases together: Index to Theses (UK and Ireland) and Dissertation Abstracts (international: mainly North American theses, with a smaller selection from around the world). Here are the search options:

Dynamed
DynaMed is a clinical reference tool created by physicians for physicians and other health care professionals for use at the point-of-care. With clinically -organized summaries for more than 3,200 topics, DynaMed provides the latest content and resources.

Econlit with Full Text  
EconLit with Full Text contains all of the abstracts and indexing available in EconLit, plus full text for more than 500 journals, including the American Economic Association journals.
Econlit covers abstracts for over 400 economic journal articles, books, book reviews, collective volume articles, working papers and dissertations in the fields of economics, including capital markets, country studies, econometrics, economic forecasting, environmental economics, government regulations, labor economics, monetary theory, urban economics and more.

Economist Intelligence Unit - Country Reports (EIU)
Ireland, UK, Germany, France, Spain and Japan: reports from 1996/97 to present through EIU (other countries: embargoed access (6 months) through Business Source Complete).

EcoWin   
Economic and financial data for over 100 countries and for aggregates such as Eurozone, Africa, Americas and World. Data is collected from more than 800 primary sources, including national statistical offices, central banks, financial exchanges and private institutes. Updated daily.

Accessing Ecowin:

• Staff/researchers: install EcoWin software on your computer on or off campus. Contact your Subject Librarian for installation instructions.

Education-Line
Education-line is a freely accessible database of the full text of conference papers, working papers and electronic literature which supports educational research, policy and practice.

Education Research Complete
Education Research Complete is a bibliographic and full text database covering scholarly research and information relating to all areas of education. Topics covered include all levels of education from early childhood to higher education, and all educational specialties, such as multilingual education, health education, and testing. Education Research Complete also covers areas of curriculum instruction as well as administration, policy, funding, and related social issues. The database provides indexing and abstracts for more than 1,500 journals, as well as full- text for more than 750 journals. This database also includes full text for more than 80 books and full text for numerous education-related conference papers.

EMBASE  
EMBASE (Excerpta Medica), is the most comprehensive database in biomedicine and pharmacology and gives you access to the most up-to-date information about medical and drug-related subjects with over 11 million records. The EMBASE journal collection is international with over 4,500 biomedical journals from 70 countries. Allows simultaneous searching of the Medline database.

Emerald Management Xtra  
Access to full text of Emerald's 216 management and marketing journals. Additional reviews of articles in the top 300 management journals from other publishers.

Environment and Planning  
Environment and Planning is a collection of four urban and regional planning journals. They focus on everything from the environment and nature through planning and policy to theory and design.

ERIC International  
ERIC International consists of two abstract databases which can be searched together or separately:

• The Australian Education Index is Australia's largest source of education information. Its sources include reports, books, journal articles, online resources, conference papers, book chapters and theses. Coverage: 1977 to date.
• ERIC (the US Educational Resources Information Center) is the world's largest education database, indexing over 650 journals, as well as grey literature. Publication types include journal articles, books, research syntheses, conference papers, technical reports and policy papers. Coverage: 1966 to date.

ESRI reports
Full-text of the Economic and Social Research Institute publications.  Search or browse and download PDF documents.  Covers a wide range of topics including education, health, gender issues, housing, industrial development, and social disadvantage.

FAME

Company accounts, ratios, activities, ownership and management for the largest 2.6 million UK and Irish companies, summary information for a further 1 million smaller businesses.

FAME is best viewed using Internet Explorer: some advanced features may not work with other browsers.

Screen Studies Online (previously known as Film Indexes Online)     
Film Indexes Online is three film databases which can be searched together or separately.

• American Film Index Catalogue (AFI) is the premier, authoritative resource of American film information, covers the history of American cinema comprehensively from 1893 to 1974, with records for selected major films from 1975-2008.
• Film Index International (FII). Produced in collaboration with the British Film Institute and based on the Summary of Film and Television (SIFT) database collated by the BFI over the past 70 years, FiIm Index International provides in-depth indexing of over 120,000 films and biographical information for more than 737,000 personalities.
• FIAF Index to Film Periodicals Plus is a bibliographical index of the world's foremost academic and popular film journals from 1972 to the present day. It also included full-text access to 47 journals.

Geoscience World   
Provides full text access to  peer-reviewed articles from high impact geoscience publications. GeoScienceWorld is the result of a collaboration by six leading earth science societies and one institute to develop cooperatively an electronic research resource for earth sciences.It is interoperable with GeoRef, the bibliographic search database published by the American Geological Institute which includes information on over 3500 publications.

HeinOnline is the world's largest image-based legal research database offering access to tens of millions of pages of research material. Fully searchable and browseable access to full-text collections, including:

HUDOC - European Court of Human Rights Portal
The European Court of Human Rights HUDOC Portal is a powerful, user-friendly information system which provides free online access to the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights, the European Commission of Human Rights and the Committee of Ministers.

IEEE Xplore  
Represents 30% of electrical engineering and computer science literature. IEL provides access to all IEEE journals, transactions, magazines and conference proceedings; IEE journals and conference proceedings; and current IEEE standards. Full-text is available from 1988 and selected content available from 1950.

With over a third of a million full-text works of poetry, prose and drama in English, together with the definitive online criticism and reference library, Literature Online is the world's largest cross-searchable database of literature and criticism. MEDLINE
Provides authoritative medical information on medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, the health care system, pre-clinical sciences, and much more. Created by the National Library of Medicine, MEDLINE uses MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) indexing with tree, tree hierarchy, subheadings and explosion capabilities to search citations from over 4,800 current biomedical journals.

MLA International Bibliography  
Provides a classified listing and subject index for books and articles published on modern languages, literatures, folklore, and linguistics. It comprises a collection of 1.6 million citations drawn from 4,400 journals and other key global sources. Runs from 1963 to the present.

Nature Publishing Group  
Includes access to Nature magazine and 34 other titles from Nature Publishing Group.

Naxos Music Library
This resource streams over 350,000 tracks, all fully indexed and searchable by composer, artist, period, year of composition, instrument or genre. NBER Working Papers
Full texts of working papers produced by researchers at the National Bureau of Economic Research. Over 700 papers are added to this database every year

New Catholic Encyclopedia
Hosted by Gale Virtual Reference Library, this e-book version of the 15-volume second edition of the New Catholic Encyclopedia is fully indexed and searchable. Among the 12,000 entries in the encyclopedia are articles on theology, philosophy, history, literary figures, saints, musicians and much more 

OECD iLibrary   
Formerly SourceOECD the iLibary hosts statistics and factbooks for the 34 OECD member states and for selected non-OECD countries. Its areas of focus include: economics, education, health, goverance and science and technology.
