Salaries

Much has been written about the pay and allowances of members of the Houses of the Oireachtas. Here we will provide a clear and accurate account of these costs. A member’s salary may comprise one or both of the following:

  • A basic salary
  • An additional salaried allowance for specified positions

Salaries are subject to tax, PRSI, the universal social charge, pension levy and pension contribution.

Allowances

Members are also entitled to a “Parliamentary Standard Allowance (PSA)”. This allowance has two distinct elements:

  • Travel and accommodation allowance (TAA)
  • Public representation allowance (PRA)

Both the TAA and the PRA are paid in arrears as a single monthly allowance.
