Amy Schumer Drops Out of ‘Barbie’ Movie (Exclusive)

6 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Amy Schumer has parted ways with Sony’s live-action “Barbie” over a scheduling conflict, Variety has learned.

“Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts,” the actress said in a statement to Variety. “The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.”

The big screen adaptation of Mattel’s iconic toy line was expected to start production this summer on June 23, but Schumer’s busy schedule includes a lengthy promotional tour for her new Fox comedy “Snatched,” which opens in May.

Sony, however, needed to stick to its June 29, 2018 release date as Mattel already has merchandise and product cycles in motion–shifting the production to accommodate Schumer would have put on a strain on other partners on the film, according to insiders.

'Beauty and the Beast' to Repeat at #1 Over 'Power Rangers', 'Life' and 'CHiPs'

7 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

As has been the case over the last three weekends, this weekend is looking to outperform last year and, once again, by a significant margin. In addition to Beauty and the Beast's second weekend, three new wide releases make their debut including Lionsgate's Power Rangers, Sony's R-rated sci-fi Life and WB's R-rated comedy CHiPs, all of which will have varying degrees of success as the top twelve should top a combined $180 million, making it the second largest weekend of the year. As of Wednesday, Disney's Beauty and the Beast has brought in $217.6 million domestically and another $244.3 million internationally. This »

‘Baskets’ Review: Season 2 Finale Makes a Bold Move Toward a New Family Business

1 hour ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for the “Baskets” Season 2 finale, Episode 10, “Circus.”]

After a year that saw the Baskets family driven apart, Season 2 wrapped by bringing them all together — in an unexpectedly endearing manner. Christine (Louie Anderson), who literally skipped town a few episodes prior and tried out a new family in “Denver” (Episode 7), made the bold choice to go into business with her boys instead of being taken care of by Ken (Alex Morris). He offered. She said no. And now they’re “building an empire” — a circus empire.

For as much as we loved Dale and Chip’s journeys in Season 2, which saw an increased focus on Chip being rewarded for hard work and Dale being punished for immature behavior, this finale’s focus on Christine was more than fitting. Louie Anderson earned an Emmy for his performance in Season 1, and, if we’re comparing the two for such purposes, this year’s turn was even better. He could have more gold in his future. »

Ryan Gosling Explains Why He Laughed During Oscars Best Picture Mix-Up

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Nearly a full month has passed since the 89th Academy Awards show committed what many have come to regard as one of the most egregious and high-profile faux pas in Oscars history: when “La La Land” was announced as best picture instead of the actual winner, “Moonlight.”

And yet, “La La Land” leading man and beloved Hollywood “nice guy,” Ryan Gosling, is only just now offering an explanation for his oddly blithe reaction to the best picture mix-up. Amid a legion of shock, bewilderment, and light chaos following the Academy’s correction, the camera panned to Gosling’s face as he erupted into a fit of laughter — picture that has since circulated the viral rounds of cyberspace.

In a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gosling explained that his reaction (which might have otherwise been interpreted as some derivative of bitterness) was actually motivated by a surge of relief.
