‘Beauty and the Beast’ Soaring to Epic $155 Million Opening at Box Office

22 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Beauty and the Beast” is already having a magical weekend at the nation’s multiplexes with an estimated opening of $155 million-plus already in sight, estimates showed early Friday.

Disney indicated that it expects the live-action musical to finish in a range between $140 million to $155 million while a rival estimate placed the number in the $167 million-plus range.

Beauty and the Beast” had already banked nearly $40 million at noon Pdt with pre-sales and a stellar $16.3 million from Thursday night previews. The first-day total could approach $60 million.

The new numbers blow away earlier forecasts from Disney, which had indicated earlier in the week that “Beauty and the Beast” would open to more than $120 million domestically this weekend at 4,210 locations. The film — the only new film opening wide — should add between $80 million and $110 million in international box office as Disney is launching in about 70% of markets.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts Talks Alternate Post-Credits Scene & Opening For ‘Kong: Skull Island’

1 hour ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Kong: Skull Island” does something remarkable, especially in the context of contemporary blockbuster, franchise films: it has fun and a real individual spirit. Even though the film serves as a connective piece of Warner Bros. larger monster movie universe, Jordan Vogt-Roberts treats it as his own, and brings his own rule book to the table. He doesn’t waste time bringing out the monster, the thrills are equally balanced by a lighter touch, and the setpieces are big, bold, and spectacular.

Box Office: ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Roars to $16.3 Million on Thursday

5 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney’s live-action musical “Beauty and the Beast” has opened with a magical $16.3 million at Thursday night preview screenings in North America.

The preview gross was the biggest of the year and the biggest ever for a Disney live-action title, coming in above “Iron Man 3” and “Furious 7.” Premium formats, including 3D and Imax, generated 41% of the preview take.

Beauty and the Beast” is expected to open to more than $120 million domestically this weekend at 4,210 locations. The film — the only new film opening wide — should add between $80 million and $110 million in international box office as Disney is launching in about 70% of markets.

The most optimistic forecasts have “Beauty” finishing with the best March opening ever, eclipsing last year’s $166 million launch for “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and 2012’s opening of “The Hunger Games” at $152.5 million.

Is It Time to Revive the Animated Live-Action Movie?

7 hours ago | FilmSchoolRejects.com | See recent FilmSchoolRejects news »

As the major studios tinker with photorealistic character designs, can Hollywood find the future of animation in its past?

This weekend, families with hit their local multiplex to relive the wonder of Beauty and the Beast in its new live-action format. And whether the film is a runaway hit or only a modest success, Disney shows no signs of plugging its pipeline of live-action remakes. According to this 2016 Time piece, Disney is currently working on no fewer than twelve (that’s one-two) remakes of their popular animated films, meaning twelve more movies featuring up-and-coming actresses, revamped musical numbers, and CGI creatures that take a deep, deep dive into the uncanny valley.

While this brand new surge of Disney movies are likely to each be a technical wonder, for my money, there’s something oddly pedestrian about converting the beautiful Disney animated character designs into a series of photorealistic CGI models. While »

Screen Anarchists On Kong: Skull Island

9 hours ago | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

Unless you've been living under a (skull-shaped?) rock, you're probably aware there is a new King King film in theaters. It's called Kong: Skull Island, and opinions about it within Screen Anarchy are divided, to say the least. Kwenton Bellette was the first of us to see it, and he wrote our official review. He was not benevolent-minded towards it. In fact, Kwenton basically tore Skull Island a new eye-hole. Here are some nice quotes, taken from Kwenton's article: ...As if to revert expectations, the direction instead drains all the interest, intrigue and humanity, resulting in a bloodless theme park ride. (...) The bad direction ensures the film remains surface-level shallow, with genuine ideas and moments thrown at the screen, and almost discarded in...

'Beauty And The Beast' bests 'Kong' in UK social buzz

Live-action remake triumphs on buzz chart ahead of its release today (March 17)

Beauty And The Beast, Disney’s live-action remake of its animated classic, garnered the most buzz on UK social media between March 9-15, besting runner-up Kong: Skull Island.

Of the 20,775 comments received by Beauty And The Beast across the internet, including news and social media, 2,037 displayed an intent to view, according to numbers provided by analysis firm Way to Blue.

The Emma Watson-led film, which is released in the UK today (March 17), has made national headlines recently due to its “gay moment” which has led to it being pulled from release in Malaysia and an adults-only rating in Russia.

Kong: Skull Island, now in its second week of release, received 1,142 intent to view comments out of 13,073 total comments, an increase in its second week of release.

Power Rangers, the sci-fi action film starring Elizabeth Banks, ranked third in social media buzz with 5,739 total comments »

‘Logan’s’ James Mangold to Direct Fox’s NYPD Drama ‘The Force’

22 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Logan” director James Mangold is in negotiations with Fox to develop and direct an adaptation of Don Winslow’s upcoming novel “The Force” about corrupt NYPD officers.

The talks with Mangold are taking place six months after Fox bought the movie rights to the crime thriller and set it up with Ridley Scott to produce through his Fox-based Scott Free company.

Fox’s sister company HarperCollins Publishers’ imprint William Morrow will release the new novel in June, which centers on a corrupt sergeant at the NYPD’s most elite crime-fighting unit who must choose between his family, his partners, and his life. Michael Schaefer and Shane Salerno are producing with Scott.

'Beauty and the Beast' Hopes to Tell a Tale of a March Opening Weekend Record

16 March 2017 12:53 PM, PDT | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Thus far, 2017 is without a $100 million opener, but that will all change this weekend as Disney's latest animated classic turned live action film, Beauty and the Beast, is set to open in over 4,200 theaters in Us and Canada. In addition to becoming the first $100 million opener of 2017, this "tale as old as time" may challenge Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice for the March opening weekend record and rank among the top ten all-time domestic openers. All told, this weekend will see the top twelve smash the $122 million the top twelve grossed from the same weekend last year. In fact, Beauty and the Beast should easily top $122 million all on its own. Anticipation for Disney's Beauty and the Beast has been sky high for some time now as Disney has taken every opportunity to market the fantasy feature online and across all its media channels. As of March 6, online ticket retailer Fandango. »

Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston’s Tour Across Asia Is Making Us Very Hungry

16 March 2017 12:12 PM, PDT | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Brie Larson and Tom Hiddleston are on the Asian food tour of our dreams.

The Kong: Skull Island costars have been posting enviable food photos while overseas promoting their new film. Larson kicked things off on Tuesday with a little sake in Japan. “Picking a sake glass at Nihonryori RyuGin was hard. Each one is a hand crafted work of art,” she wrote on Instagram, followed by a mesmerizing video of the liquor being poured.

Hiddleston, on the other hand, snapped himself outside a Tokyo restaurant with their other Kong co-star Samuel L. Jackson. “My first time in Japan,” he wrote. »

Samuel L. Jackson Would Rather Do John Wick 3 Than a Nick Fury Movie

16 March 2017 11:30 AM, PDT | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Though Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D. has had a good run on ABC, there has always been talk of Samuel L. Jackson getting his own stand-alone Nick Fury movie. But guess what? The actor doesn't seem so interested in that. And he has a better idea. He wants to co-star in John Wick 3.

Samuel L. Jackson hasn't ever really held the same kind of 'franchise viagra' mantra that fueled Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson's path to superstardom, but he has appeared in his fare share of sequels, outside of the Marvel universe. After becoming a true household name with his appearance in Pulp Fiction, Jackson immediately took on a key role in Die Hard 3. He also brought quite a bit of gravitas to the Star Wars prequels as Mace Windu. And he's a permanent fixture in the xXx movies. Now, he wants in on John Wick's territory. »

Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Talks Getting Rid Of The “Romantic Part” Of The Big-Screen Experience

Last night, I went to see “Kong: Skull Island” (again) on 70mm, and simply put, it looked fantastic, and I’d say even better than the IMAX 3D version I first saw. I’ve also been streaming “Riverdale” on Netflix, and I’m fully wrapped up in the series, which is spurring all kinds of water-cooler conversation. Both methods of consuming media have their merits, and can make for memorable viewing experiences, and it’s the point that Ted Sarandos continues to hammer home about the role Netflix plays in the changing film and television landscape.

Logan TV Spot Separates Beauty From Beast

16 March 2017 10:01 AM, PDT | We Got This Covered | See recent We Got This Covered news »

Venturing out to see Disney’s Beauty and the Beast this coming weekend? The latest TV spot for James Mangold’s Logan asks you to kindly reconsider.

Clocking in at TV spot number 33 (!), the bite-sized promo focuses on the opening segment of James Mangold’s critically-adorned thriller, when James Howlett is simply trying to make ends meet as a limousine driver. It’s a miserable life for Hugh Jackman’s world-weary mutant, and it’s small wonder why Wolverine’s signature temper gets the better of him just as today’s new promo closes out. That being said, the teaser is more of a cheeky wink to Logan‘s forthcoming box office tussle with Beauty and the Beast than anything else, so you needn’t worry too much about spoilers.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ Will Topple ‘Kong’ and ‘Logan,’ But Everyone’s Going to Make Bank

16 March 2017 8:00 AM, PDT | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Beauty and the Beast” (Disney) should accelerate the now-surging 2017 box office: Expect to see a domestic opening above $100 million, the first since “Rogue One.” Like other recent Disney hits, it’s timed to play during staggered spring breaks.

A live-action musical based on the studio’s 1991 smash, it fills what has become Disney’s annual slot for updated children’s classics. It began with Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” in 2010, which opened to $126 million and a domestic $334 million (both adjusted) and over $1 billion worldwide. From 2013 on, they have provided a spring offering, with last year’s “The Jungle Book” topping “Alice” as the biggest so far ($364 million total domestic after opening to $103 million).

“Beauty” would exceed all of these if its opening hits the consensus guess of $130 million. That would be more than $40 million ahead of “Logan” (20th Century Fox); at $89 million, it’s currently the year’s best opening. »

Forget Nick Fury and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it seems Samuel L. Jackson wants to delve into the world of high-ranking assassins and espionage via John Wick: Chapter 3.

At least, that’s according to reporter Simon Thompson, who appeared on the latest episode of Meet the Movie Press (via Screen Rant). Thompson didn’t deliver a direct quote from the Hollywood A-lister; rather, the entertainment journalist recounted a recent meeting he had with Jackson, and it was here that the actor allegedly gushed about the John Wick universe and, perhaps most enticing of all, his desire to check into the Continental.

Keanu Reeves’ ruthless hitman came up in conversation while the pair were discussing the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Jackson’s ongoing role in it. One glance at IMDb – not the most reliable of sources, »

Logan receives a Beauty and the Beast-inspired TV spot

16 March 2017 2:45 AM, PDT | Flickeringmyth | See recent Flickeringmyth news »

As Logan enters the third week of its theatrical run, it is set to face some pretty steep competition in the form of Disney’s live-action remake of beloved animated masterpiece Beauty and the Beast – and that’s not even factoring in last week’s release of Kong: Skull Island.

As such, 20th Century Fox has released a new TV spot for Logan advising moviegoers to skip the beauty and come see the beast. Check it out below…

Brie Larson Scared 'Kong: Skull Island' Co-Star Tom Hiddleston With Her In-Flight Face Mask -- See the Pic!

Tom Hiddleston has no problem facing off against a gargantuan gorilla, but apparently Brie Larson in a spa mask spooks him.

To Hiddleston's credit, that mask is the stuff of nightmares. It looks like something a serial killer would wear in a high-brow French horror movie.
