7 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

Thus far, 2017 is without a $100 million opener, but that will all change this weekend as Disney's latest animated classic turned live action film, Beauty and the Beast, is set to open in over 4,200 theaters in Us and Canada. All told, this weekend will see the top twelve smash the $122 million the top twelve grossed from the same weekend last year. In fact, Beauty and the Beast should easily top $122 million all on its own. Anticipation for Disney's Beauty and the Beast has been sky high for some time now as Disney has taken every opportunity to market the fantasy feature online and across all its media channels. Domestically, some think Beauty has a shot at scoring the top launch of all time for a PG title, besting Pixar and Disney's Finding Dory, which swam off with $135 million in summer 2016. And the musical is nearly assured of securing »

‘Like Me’ Review: Addison Timlin is a Psychopath for the Viral Media Age — SXSW 2017 Review

2 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

There may be no idea more contemporary than a demented character using the internet in the reckless pursuit of fame. Writer-director Rob Mockler’s debut, “Like Me,” distills that motif to a ferocious young woman so compelled to create online sensations that they drive her insane. It’s an obvious conceit and doesn’t offer new insights, but Mockler transforms the material into a solid thriller with an edgy vision of millennial lunacy, sketching out a psychopath unique to the viral video age.

That would be Kiya (Addison Timlin), a mysterious prankster first seen recording a convenience store clerk late at night as she puts a gun to his head and he begs for his life. The video instantly takes off, generating heated debates across the web and Mockler’s stylish montage captures the overlapping conversations with a knack for featuring the disorienting chaos of modern discourse.

‘Beauty and the Beast’ Sells Out More Than 1,000 U.S. Shows

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Disney’s live-action “Beauty and the Beast” has sold out more than 1,000 shows prior to its opening, according to online ticketing service Fandango.

The service, a subsidiary of NBCUniversal, said that “Beauty and the Beast” represents more than 90% of its ticket sales for this weekend. It’s the fastest-selling family film in Fandango history.

“It’s rare to see a family film opening like a superhero movie but this ‘Beauty’ is a beast in ticket sales, defying expectations and then some,” said the company’s managing editor, Erik Davis.

Sales are being driven by nostalgia for the original Disney animated classic, released in 1991, and the recent popularity of live-action fairy tales is translating into massive ticket sales.
