We're Moving the Lockkeeper's House

Trust for the National Mall and the National Park Service will restore the historic Lockkeeper's House with interactive educational exhibits!

December 1, 2016 marked the groundbreaking of the relocation and restoration of the Lockeeper's House, the oldest structure on the National Mall. For more than 180 years, the house has witnessed the history, development and commerce of our nation's capital. Located just inches from heavy traffic at the corner of 17th Street and Constitution Avenue NW, the house will be lifted and moved about 20 feet from the road and outfitted with an educational exhibit space welcoming visitors to Constitution Gardens and the National Mall.

In its new location, the Lockkeeper’s House will serve as a ceremonial entrance to the National Mall, with a visitor information plaza and a digital exhibition space with educational programming to enhance the visitor experience. The digital content within the house will help explain the rich history of the National Mall and efforts to protect and preserve the Constitution Gardens. In addition, the construction will include a new stone wall and landscape improvements.
