Talk about putting the meta in metaphysics: Laurie Metcalf’s real-life actress-daughter Zoe Perry is being eyed to play the mother of Young Sheldon in CBS’ in-the-works prequel spinoff. Metcalf, as you know, currently recurs on Big Bang as the mother of Adult Sheldon (Jim Parsons).

Additionally, as TVLine just reported, Parsons’ prepubescent predecessor is set to be portrayed by Big Little Lies breakout Iain Armitage.

‘Mad Men’ Creator Matt Weiner Reveals Details of New Amazon Drama ‘The Romanoffs’

10 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Matt Weiner is back in his element – a writers room stocked with “Mad Men” alums as he tackles his ambitious and unconventional new series, Amazon’s “The Romanoffs.”

“Romanoffs” will consist of eight hourlong episodes, each of which will tell a standalone story with no recurring plot elements or actors. The only common thread is that each episode will tell the stories of people in contemporary times who believe they are descendants of the imperial family that ruled Russia from 1613 until the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917.

Czar Nicholas II, empress Alexandra and their five children were sent into exile and brutally murdered by a Bolshevik execution squad in July 1918. The Romanoffs’ legend has been burnished for a century by the lore that daughter Anastasia survived the slayings and wound up taking on a new identity.

For Weiner, creator and exec producer of AMC’s hallowed period drama “Mad Men,” the attraction of “Romanoffs” is not to revisit »

Matt Damon's 'The Great Wall' to Lose $75 Million; Future U.S.-China Productions in Doubt

13 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

The Great Wall at the domestic box office (it has made $34.8 million in North America) has iced any notion of a significant future for U.S.-China co-productions. The movie likely will end up with losses of more than $75 million, sources say, and Universal Pictures will be on the hook for at least $10 million.

The studio funded about 25 percent of the film's $150 million production budget, the rest coming in equal parts from Legendary Entertainment, China Film Group and Le Vision Pictures. But Universal also covered Wall's global marketing expenses, conservatively estimated at $80 »

The company paid $400,000 total in bonuses for the 12 features from Sundance acquired through the Avd program. The films include “Manifesto,” starring Cate Blanchett (pictured above), in which she inhabits 13 different characters; China-set absurdist comedy “Free and Easy”; Indian sweatshop documentary “Machines”; and writer-director Kristen Tan’s “Pop Aye” dramedy set in Thailand. Film Review: ‘The Ottoman Lieutenant’

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Hot on the heels of George Mendeluk’s “Bitter Harvest,” Joseph Ruben’s “The Ottoman Lieutenant” offers another theoretically noble if B-grade and somewhat propagandistic attempt to shed light on a murky historical chapter — while falling into a similar puddle of romance-novel cliches from which it can’t get up. After premiering at San Jose’s Cinequest on March 1, this handsome but creaky melodrama set at the onset of World War I opens in limited release in the U.S. on March 10. Less discriminating viewers jonesing for some old-fashioned costume hokum will get just that, but lack of critical support and marquee names should make the theatrical stay of this dusty slice of exotica a short one.

Immediately piling on the stale dramatic devices, both antiquated and revisionist, Jeff Stockwell’s screenplay opens with the retrospective voiceover musings of our heroine, Lillie Rowe (Icelandic actress Hera Hilmar, serving up a »

PwC Accountant Wanted to Perform Sketch at Oscars (Exclusive)

3 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Unlike most accountants, PriceWaterhouseCoopers’ Brian Cullinan did not want to stay anonymous. He commonly tweeted selfies with celebrities and relished his trips down the red carpet at the last four Academy Awards.

Before he became famous for his involvement in handing over the wrong envelope on Sunday’s telecast, he’d been angling for a spot on the stage, Variety has learned. Cullinan had pitched Oscar producers on doing a comedic sketch involving him and his colleague Martha Ruiz, interacting with host Jimmy Kimmel. Sources said that Cullinan enjoys being in the spotlight and likes the fact that people frequently compare his looks to actor Matt Damon.

But according to two sources with knowledge of the exchange, the idea was shot down.

Representatives from PwC didn’t immediately respond for comment.

In past years, the Oscars accountants were sometimes introduced on TV, with their briefcases in tow, to explain their »

‘Transformers’ Spinoff ‘Bumblebee’ Finds Director in ‘Kubo and the Two Strings’ Helmer

2 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Travis Knight is moving on from stop animation to try his hand at live action as the Laika CEO has been tapped to direct the “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee.”

The movie would mark his live-action directorial debut after helming the Oscar-nominated “Kubo and the Two Strings” for Laika last year. Paramount was clearly eyeing someone with an animated background as execs also met with “Lego Batman” director Chris McKay. The studio had no comment.

While plot details are still unknown, the story will focus on the popular character who has appeared in all of Michael Bay’s “Transformers” films.

Does ‘X-Men: Apocalypse’ Post-Credits Scene Actually Have Anything To Do With ‘Logan’? (Spoilers)

33 minutes ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

(Some spoilers for “Logan” are ahead.) It can be tough to follow the “X-Men” film franchise continuity. Often the films tease each other, but elements like time travel have gummed up the works. “Logan” functions more as a stand-alone “What If” story than a sequel to the last “X-Men” film, “X-Men: Apocalypse.” Still, last year, it seemed as though “X-Men: Apocalypse” was teasing elements that would make their way into “Logan.” The former film ended with a post-credits scene that seemed to introduce conflict for the next movie (you can read all about that mysterious scene here). How ‘Logan’ Fits With the Other ‘X-Men’ and ‘Wolverine’ Movies (Spoilers)

57 minutes ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

(Note: This story contains spoilers for the plot of “Logan.”) When “X-Men: Days of Future Past” sent Logan (Hugh Jackman), better known as Wolverine, back in time, it rewrote the continuity timeline of the “X-Men” franchise. “Logan,” the final film in which Jackman will play the role of Wolverine, takes place in 2029, years after all the other “X-Men” movies featuring him have taken place. Just where “Logan” fits in the “X-Men” timeline isn’t made explicitly clear — it’s more of a standalone story, and likely isn’t intended to fit inside the greater continuity. But it does reference several past events. »

Katy Perry Inches Toward Britney Spears Moment With Dramatically Short ‘Do (Video)

Maybe Katy Perry has more in common with Britney Spears than she thought. Perry, who was criticized last month for seeming to make light of Britney Spears‘ 2007 meltdown by boasting that she hasn’t “shaved my head yet,” veered dangerously close to the cueball look on Thursday with a dramatically short-cropped hairdo. Te “Chained to the Rhythm” chanteuse showcased the new look, which features close-shorn sides beneath a mop of blond locks, via an Instagram video. Does ‘Logan’ Have a Post-Credits Scene?

The first Marvel movie of the new year is finally upon us, and it’s quite a doozie. “Logan” has received rave reviews from critics, who have been describing it as one of the best comic book movies ever made. It’s also 20th Century Fox’s second attempt at an R-rated superhero movie in as many years, after “Deadpool” was a huge hit in 2016. “Logan” is the first “X-Men” movie to let Wolverine really cut loose with bloody violence and a whole lot of swearing. »
