‘Twin Peaks’: Hear Sheryl Lee Bring ‘The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer’ To Life In New Clips

Audible Studios has released three new clips from the audiobook edition of Jennifer Lynch‘s “The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer,” which was originally published in 1990 as a spin-off of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” television series. Sheryl Lee, who played the character in the series, returns to perform as Laura.

The three clips introduce the character of Laura Palmer at age 12, seemingly innocent enough, as she eagerly writes in the new diary she got for her birthday. However, Laura seems to have some dark secrets, as the clips hint at the psychosexual horror to come, when she writes about more adult conversations and intense visions of a demonic presence. You know, normal Lynch stuff.

“There are some things I can’t tell anyone,” Palmer confess, voiced ominously by Lee, as if speaking directly to the reader. “I promise to tell these things to you. »

‘The Americans’ Review: Season 5 Expertly Paints an Orwellian Future Through a Dystopian Past

It’s 1984. The Soviet Union and the United States have long been engaged in a heated Cold War. Each side has covert operatives looking to protect their country and hurt the opposition. Americans lie awake at night, fearing the sound of an air ride siren and the sight of a nuclear bomb going off in the distance.

But in the Ussr, they’re just trying to survive. They just want to have enough food for their families. Russians just want to eat.

And Americans are trying to stop them.

What seems like a simple new premise for Season 5 is stripped down to an even more basic state during the first three episodes of “The Americans,” as the complicated lives led by Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) stateside are contrasted with the barren existence of their comrades in Russia. What feel like far-reaching suspicions lead to inhuman decisions, all »

‘Mad Men’ Creator Matthew Weiner Finally Reveals Details About New Amazon Series ‘The Romanoffs’

It’s been nearly two years since “Mad Men” went off the air, and fans have been waiting for details about creator Matthew Weiner’s next series. Last we heard, he had landed an anthology series at Amazon (with the Weinstein Co. producing) after an intense bidding war.

Finally, fresh details have emerged: Weiner’s new series “The Romanoffs” isn’t a period piece but a look at modern-day people who believe they are the descendants of the famed Romanoff family – the clan supposedly wiped out when the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917. The imperial family had previously ruled since 1613, and according to legend, only the daughter Anastasia survived being slain by escaping and taking on a new identity.

Reza Aslan on the Only Way We’ll Ever See Religious Tolerance — IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast

Last Week’S Podcast: Dan Bucatinsky on ’24: Legacy,’ ‘Scandal’ and His Partnership with Lisa Kudrow — IndieWire’s Turn It On Podcast

Reza Aslan has met Jezus.

Yes, thats “Jezus,” with a “z.” He’s the leader of a doomsday cult in Hawai’i, and “weirdly looks like Jesus, who thinks he’s receiving messages from the heavens,” Aslan said. “He has a vision for the end of the world, a catastrophic flood that’s a result of climate change.”

As a result, Jezus’ community is building an arc for the coming flood. Sounds crazy – until you realize there’s some truth in what may eventually be coming. “What they are afraid of is real, climate change is a real thing!”

Aslan, an author and religion scholar whose credits also include consulting on HBO’s “The Leftovers,” is hoping to find common religious ground in a world where that seems pretty impossible. »

You spend a lot of time looking at Robbie Coltrane’s face when you watch “National Treasure.”

The camera lingers on it often over the course of the four-hour miniseries, now available on Hulu, letting every conflicted emotion and moment of vulnerability play across his wide friendly features. 7 New Netflix Shows to Binge Watch in March 2017, and The Best Episodes of Each

1 March 2017 12:38 PM, PST

1. “Grace and Frankie” Season 3 (available March 24)

Why Should I Watch It? If Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda aren’t reason enough — not to mention the rest of the cast, including Martin Sheen, Sam Waterston, and June Diane Raphael — then know this: “Grace and Frankie” is a living embodiment of progressive beliefs. Not only does the show cover an array of taboo topics from the dramatic weight of right-to-die debates to casually breaking cultural stigmas surrounding post-menopause sex, but “Grace and Frankie” consists of half-hour episodes that don’t adhere to comedic or dramatic formulas. The tone is unique to the series, respecting the characters and building to moments of great power and great humor. So give it a try.

Best Episode: We haven’t seen Season 3 yet — Netflix, please send screeners at your earliest convenience — so we’ll simply say this: Midway through last year, when debating the best TV »

Michael Shannon Sings ‘Russians’ by Sting on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’

‘Samurai Jack’ Review: Adult Swim Resurrects the Best Samurai of the 21st Century, and It’s Already an Action-Packed Masterpiece

1 March 2017 10:54 AM, PST

Decades ago, the samurai warrior created a template for the modern action hero, inspiring silent western heroes and gunslinging detectives alike. So it follows that any modern take on the samurai really needs to prove its worth. Quentin Tarantino’s two-part “Kill Bill” charts the history of stylized action from the East to the West, but Genndy Tartakovsky’s “Samurai Jack” fuses them into a spectacular whole. The animated series originally aired on Cartoon Network between 2001 and 2004, but returns as a miniseries this March to conclude the story — and so far, it remains some of the best action-based storytelling out there. Exploiting the pliability of animation to its greatest potential, Tartakovsky transforms his influences into a hugely satisfying formula of his own making, delivering an action-packed masterpiece on par with the best of the genre.

For the uninitiated, the premise of “Samurai Jack” is relatively straightforward: In feudal Japan, a »
