Oscar Best Picture Nominees Get the Honest Trailer Treatment

9 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

The ever-clever Honest Trailers produced by Screen Junkies just wouldn’t be the same without an Oscar installment. In the newest edition, Hollywood gets roasted for its selection of nine best picture nominees. “They’ve got to stop releasing all these movies at the same time,” the voiceover mocks. With less than a week to go before Hollywood’s biggest night, the industry could probably use a couple lighthearted jokes.

The video runs through all the nominees, beginning with “Arrival” and moving onto “Lion” (“If you say you’ve seen this, you’re probably lyin’.”) “Hell or High Water” gets the same treatment. Paired with clips of “True Grit,” the trailer promises viewers a chance to hear “that one grizzled cowboy voice Jeff Bridges does.”

“For a film that’s so entertaining, straightforward, and unpretentious, it has no chance of actually winning best picture,” says the voiceover. Touche, Screen Junkies. »

Shortly before his death in 2003, Sheeran confessed that he killed fellow Teamster leader Jimmy Hoffa, whose body has never been found. He also claimed that it was Hoffa who wanted John F. Japanese Auteur Seijun Suzuki Dies at 93

Japanese director Seijun Suzuki died Feb. 13 at a Tokyo hospital after a battle with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which affects the lungs. He was 93.

His death was announced by Nikkatsu, the studio that famously fired him in 1967 after 12 years and 40 films, for what is now seen as his masterpiece, Branded to Kill. The film was made in black and white as a punishment for his work on Tokyo Drifter — now also considered a classic — the year before. Both films were intended by Nikkatsu to be straightforward, B-movie yakuza gangster flicks, but Suzuki’s experimental style, »

Toronto top brass to trim 2017 festival

1 hour ago | ScreenDaily | See recent ScreenDaily news »

City To City, Vanguard axed from 2017 edition.

With seven months to go before this year’s event, the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) hierarchy has unveiled a slimmed-down event while preserving its status as an awards season platform.

Both the City To City and Vanguard strands are being retired, while several programmers will not return including, as recently announced, the popular Midnight Madness master of ceremonies Colin Geddes.

Total festival selections will drop by 20% amid a tacit acknowledgement by the leadership that historical levels had a tendency to overwhelm visitors, especially working press. Based on last year’s level of 397 films, a 20% cut would mean a total selection of about 318.

This year’s festival will comprise 14 programmes and a programming team of 21 that contains two new recruits: Kiva Reardon, a programmer at the Miami Film Festival who previously worked at the Doha Film Institute in Qatar, will programme Africa and the Middle East; while curator, producer and writer »

'Ken Loach for kids': the minds behind My Life As a Courgette

1 hour ago | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

A boy who kills his alcoholic mum is the unlikely star of this Oscar-nominated family film. Its makers tell us about taking young audiences seriously and planning to ‘crush their little hearts’

Animations made outside of the Us rarely get a look-in come Oscar night, Aardman and Studio Ghibli being the only non-American studios to win since animation was given its own category in 2001. On top of that, a “family film” whose nine-year-old protagonist kills his mother might seem a tad dark for voters. And who could fancy the chances of any film, for any prize, when it has the name of a vegetable in its title?

That said, Ma Vie de Courgette, nominated as My Life As a Zucchini and described by its director as “Ken Loach for kids”, has already been breaking the mould. With a clutch of film festival prizes and a European film award, it happens »

WGA Meeting Shows Guild On Strike Footing As Contract Talks Loom

Bargaining on a new contract isn’t expected to begin until next month, but if tonight's informational meeting is any indication, the Writers Guild of America is definitely on a strike footing. "It seems that if they took a strike authorization vote tonight, it would be favorable," said a seemingly dismayed writer upon leaving the meeting. "They were cheering speakers who were in favor of a hard line, and booing those who expressed trepidation." Non-members weren't allowed… »

‘The Expanse’: Why Season 2 Got ‘Game of Thrones’-Levels of Intense in ‘Home’

5 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

[Editor’s note: Major spoilers for “The Expanse” Season 2, Episode 5, “Home,” below.]

If you’ve never read the books written by James S.A. Corey upon which “The Expanse” is based, then Episode 5 of the second season more than likely came as a massive shock. As a show adapted from a popular book series with serious genre roots, “The Expanse” has elicited comparisons to “Game of Thrones” before. But the series reached Red Wedding-levels of surprise with “Home,” in which Miller (Thomas Jane) bonds with the protomolecule-infected Julie Mao (Florence Faivre) to prevent the Eros station from crashing into Earth.

It’s a surprisingly romantic sequence, dense with visual effects to capture the depths to which Julie has become bonded with the protomolecule. But the actual filming featured none of those trappings: Jane and Faivre were acting, according to executive producer Mark Fergus, in “a big empty room with just a chair. »

As the documentary about him, A Cinematic Life, screens in cinemas, the esteemed film critic reminisces about a life lived in front of the silver screen

Luke Buckmaster: As in your autobiography, I Peed on Fellini, the documentary David Stratton: A Cinematic Life reminisces on the time Geoffrey Wright – the director of Romper Stomper – hurled a glass of wine at you at a party. Do any other stories come to mind, about film-makers who reacted badly to what you’ve written or said?

David Stratton: When I was writing for Variety, way back in the mid-to-late 80s in Cannes, in the first week of the festival I’d been assigned to review an Icelandic film. Reviews in those days were sent off by telex or something, then they’d be printed in the weekly Variety in New York and shipped back to Cannes. So always, the reviews of the »

George Clooney: Donald Trump and Steve Bannon Are the Real Hollywood Elites

8 hours ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

If you’ve ever heard the term “Hollywood elite” used as an insult, it likely came from a Republican politician. George Clooney takes issue with that characterization in a new Canal+ interview, noting that Donald Trump and his advisor Steve Bannon fit the term as well as anyone. “Donald Trump has 22 acting credits,” the actor says. “He collects $120,000 a year in his Screen Actors Guild pension fund. He is a Hollywood elitist.”

Demi Lovato on Her New Documentary: Mental Health Is ‘Just as Important as Physical Health’

In 2008, at age 16, Demi Lovato became a rising star, landing the lead role in Disney Channel’s hit original movie “Camp Rock” alongside the Jonas Brothers, rapidly becoming a teen icon. That same year, she signed a recording deal with Hollywood Records, releasing her debut album “Don’t Forget,” which bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard Top 100. Before the release of the album, Lovato began her own tour, and appeared on the Jonas Brothers’ Burnin’ Up Tour.

Though Lovato’s success was apparent, her internal struggles were largely shielded. In 2011, with a history of drug abuse and self-harm, she entered rehab, where she was diagnosed with bipolar depression. Since her diagnosis, Lovato has been vocal about living with a mental illness and her journey through recovery. She is the spokesperson for Be Vocal, an initiative focused on helping individuals and communities with mental illness advocate for themselves and for others. »
