Oscars: A Closer Look at the Results That Were Overshadowed By the Best Picture Confusion

15 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

It's early Monday morning, and I'm finally back at my desk and starting to process what I witnessed only a few hours ago, but one thing's for sure: Bonnie and Clyde ended better for Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway than the 89th Oscars did.

When the two Hollywood legends took the stage to present best picture — something that I reported was going to take place — and Dunaway shouted the name "La La Land," the storyline for the evening seemed like it couldn't be more positive for the Academy. Jimmy Kimmel, who ABC had persuaded the »

Oscars Best-Picture Flub Explained: Read PWC’s Full Statement

17 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

The Oscars’ accounting firm, PWC, has just released a statement taking the blame for the error that led to “La La Land” being incorrectly named the Best Picture. The producers of “La La Land” had to hand over the Best Picture Oscar to the team behind “Moonlight” (pictured) — the film that truly won Best Picture. Warren Beatty, who incorrectly announced “La La Land” as the Best Picture winner with his “Bonnie and Clyde” co-star, Faye Dunaway, explained after “Moonlight” was named as the real winner that they had been given an envelope containing the name of “La La Land” star Emma Stone, »

Oscars: Australian Producer Jan Chapman Devastated by Mistaken In-Memoriam Photo

17 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Leading Australian producer, Jan Chapman was “devastated” by another mistake in the Oscars telecast.

In addition to the best picture gaffe, during the show’s In Memoriam segment, a photo of a living woman was mistakenly used.

Janet Patterson, an Australian costume designer and four-time Oscar nominee (“The Piano,” “Portrait of a Lady,” “Oscar and Lucinda” and “Bright Star”) passed away in October 2016.

Her name and occupation were correct in the montage, but the photo used was of Jan Chapman, a still-living Australian film producer. Check out the erroneous image above.

“I was devastated by the use of my image in place of my great friend and long-time collaborator Janet Patterson. I had urged her agency to check any photograph which might be used and understand that they were told that the Academy had it covered. Janet was a great beauty and »

With ‘Moonlight’ Win, Dede Gardner Becomes First Female Producer With 2 Best Picture Oscars

19 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Moonlight” didn’t only win Best Picture in an unprecedented manner, it also shattered glass ceilings as well. When Warren Beatty admitted to having read the wrong Best Picture winner as “La La Land” when it was really “Moonlight,” he gave Plan B producer Dede Gardner her second Best Picture statue, which makes her the first female producer to have that many. On Sunday night, it was clear something was amiss when Beatty, presenting with “Bonnie and Clyde” co-star Faye Dunaway, took a long pause after looking at the card inside the envelope that was supposed to contain the name of the. »

As confusion enveloped the Oscars stage on Sunday night, and it became apparent that a mistake had been made in announcing the Best Picture winner, host Jimmy Kimmel’s writers felt another tinge of panic.

“My immediate reaction, when Warren came out and said ‘I read the wrong card,’ was ‘oh my God, Jimmy is going to be blamed for this,” “Jimmy Kimmel Live” head writer Molly McNearney said. “Everyone right now thinks Jimmy Kimmel is playing a prank on the Oscars. And this is not good.”

Added her fellow head writer Danny Ricker: “I had to convince my mom that it wasn’t fake!”

As they prepped for Monday’s all-new edition of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (no rest for the Oscar weary!), McNearney and Ricker took a moment to share with IndieWire some of the evening’s most memorable moments. And there were a bunch – starting with that »

10 Legendary Live Flubs, From Steve Harvey to ‘Saturday Night Live’

16 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Live TV comes with certain risks, and Sunday’s Oscars snafu – in which “La La Land,” not “Moonlight,” was mistakenly named Best Picture at first – is a reminder of that. The occasional slip of the tongue or even pranks can lead a few buzzy, unpredictable moments, which may explain why live TV is experiencing a resurgence in popularity among TV programmers.

But there are times though when major snafus take over a live broadcast, causing embarrassment or controversy. It’s in those moments when the networks probably wished there was time for a do-over or edit.

The U.S. State Department on Monday sent out and then deleted a tweet congratulating an Oscar win by director Asghar Farhadi, who criticized President Donald Trump’s travel ban as “inhumane.”

The state department’s official Persian-language Twitter account, @USAdarFarsi, posted the congratulatory tweet to the Iranian people and Farhadi, director of “The Salesman,” after the movie won an Oscar for best foreign-language film on Sunday.

Though the ban was blocked by federal courts, the administration is currently working on a new order.

Study Ranks American Actors’ British Accents, and Vice Versa

1 hour ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Anyone who’s seen “Mary Poppins” knows what a bad Cockney accent sounds like. But for the first time, British actors have ranked Dick Van Dyke’s “mockney” as the worst attempt at a U.K. accent in a pool of the highest grossing films’ leads.

Language-learning app Babbel commissioned ex-pat professional actors from both the UK and Us to vote on a five-point scale on how convincing the accents were for leading parts in blockbusters grossing over $100 million.

For the United States accent, American Actors UK awarded British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor a 4.5/5 for his work as Solomon Northup in “12 Years a Slave.” Tied for second are the DC superheros; Christian Bale as Batman and Henry Cavill as Superman both garnered 4.2/5 scores.

Best in show for the Americans attempting the over-the-pond accents, awarded by British Actors in La, are Meryl Streep, Gwyneth Paltrow and Renée Zellweger. Streep’s Margaret Thatcher »

The movie — currently in production — is being produced by Tucker Tooley and Mark Canton, as well as Butler and Alan Siegel from G-Base, Butler’s production company.
