‘Captain Fantastic’s’ Matt Ross to Direct ‘Tomorrow and Tomorrow’ for TriStar

After helming the Oscar-nominated “Captain Fantastic,” Matt Ross will direct an adaptation of Tom Sweterlitsch’s debut novel “Tomorrow and Tomorrow” for TriStar.
Mark Gordon will produce via The Mark Gordon Company along with Entertainment 360 and Lynette Howell Taylor.
Published in 2014, the novel is set in a near future world where humanity’s relationship with evolving virtual environments becomes isolating.
“‘Tomorrow and Tomorrow’ is prescient,” Ross said. “It posits a world not so dissimilar from today, a direction we are all clearly headed where technology has altered the ways in which we interact with each other and the world around us.”

Lauren Graham is returning to broadcast television.
Fresh off Netflix's Gilmore Girls revival and NBC's gone but not forgotten family drama Parenthood, the actress has booked the lead role in the Fox comedy pilot "Linda From HR," The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The pilot was picked up pending casting, with Graham's commitment to the single-camera comedy lifting the contingency. Graham had received multiple offers this pilot season — all for comedies.

Look for Universal and Jason Blum to score another win at the box office this weekend with the micro-budgeted Get Out, a thriller and social commentary on race relations that marks the feature directorial debut of Jordan Peele (Key & Peele).
Pre-release tracking suggests the film, costing under $5 million to make, could approach or cross $20 million in its debut. Universal is being more cautious and suggesting high teens. John Gay, known for writing movies including “Run Silent Run Deep,” “Separate Tables,” “The Hallelujah Trail” and “The Courtship of Eddie’s Father,” died on Feb. 4 in Santa Monica. He was 92.
Gay shared an Oscar writing nom with Terrence Rattigan for the screenplay for “Separate Tables,” a 1958 romantic drama starring Burt Lancaster, Rita Hayworth, Deborah Kerr, and David Niven.
Long active in the Writers Guild of America, Gay wrote 14 feature films and 39 miniseries and TV movies, scripting projects for John Huston, Vincent Minnelli and John Sturges. He helped lead the Writers Guild through difficult negotiations while serving on the Wgaw’s Board of Directors (1971-75, 1977-79), and as Vice President (1985-87).
Gay started out in live television starring with his wife Barbara in “Mr. and Mrs. Mystery,” and went on to write for numerous live TV dramas. Lancaster helped recruit him to Hollywood, where he wrote Clark Gable-Lancaster starring submarine film “Run Silent Run Deep.” He »

Marking its first international co-production, Loic Magneron’s Paris-based Wide Management has boarded the Georgian prison-rugby drama “Negative Numbers,” signing on to co-produce with Brett Walker and Miguel Govea of Tbilisi-based Alief LLC and David Isakadze at Tbilisi’s Magnet Studio.
Wide will also serve as the sales agent on “Negative Numbers.” When it is completed, he aims to put it through Eye on Films (EoF), the festival and distribute support program for first and second features, backed by the E.U.’s Media Mundus program.
The first feature from Georgian screenwriter-director Uta Beria, “Negative Numbers” is set in Georgia in the early years of the last decade, when an economic crisis pushed many of the country’s out-of-work young into petty crime, which saw them ending up, under a zero-tolerance policy, in juvenile detention centers.

A dazzling cinematic style becomes the dreamy, death-obsessed substance of a troubled teen’s mind in Polish helmer-writer Kuba Czekaj’s wild coming-of-age tale “The Erlprince.” While riffing on Goethe’s famous poem “The Erlking” to reflect the world in a mirror of fables, the drama reflects on, among other things, an approaching apocalypse and the possible existence of parallel worlds. Started before Czekaj’s even wilder Venice and SXSW entry “Baby Bump” (2015) but completed afterward, it, too, gives an unorthodox spin to archetypes and confirms the helmer as a talent to watch. Adventurous fest and small-screen programmers should take a look.

For a film in which a Tibetan mastiff with big musical dreams stalks a jaded feline rock star while honing his supernatural martial arts powers and dodging kidnapping attempts from a gang of lupine Mafiosi who run a pro wrestling business on the side, “Rock Dog” is surprisingly uneventful.
Based on a graphic novel by Chinese musician Zheng Jun, this animated Chinese-American co-production cribs freely from “Kung Fu Panda,” “Ratatouille,” “The Muppets,” and “Flashdance,” taking those influences and flattening them out into an easy-listening version of the classic rock star origin story. “Rock Dog” is entirely inoffensive, and its low-key pace and no-frills animation style might come as a bit of a relief in contrast to so many frenetic kids movie spectacles. But taking an ode to the power of musical rebellion and running it through the mill of committee-thinking winds up being no rock and roll fun.

Hit by a slump at the Chinese box office, Imax China reported Friday that adjusted profit for 2016 fell 13 percent from the year prior, totaling $37.6 million.
The giant-screen exhibitor, which is a subsidiary of Toronto-based IMAX Corp. but is listed separately on the Hong Kong stock exchange, said the profit slide also reflected increased investments in revenue-sharing theaters, which carry upfront marketing and launch costs.
After nearly a decade of averaging 30 percent year-on-year growth, China's box office stalled in 2016, growing just 3.7 percent.

Last week’s shocking episode put Rayna (Connie Britton) through the ringer. The country star barely survived a scary attack at knifepoint, but the police got to her just in time to escape her stalker. But moments after she survived, her life was put on the line once again — on her drive home, the car was hit by a truck.
This week’s episode started with Rayna being rushed into the hospital after the car crash. By the time Deacon (Charles Esten) arrives to the hospital, Rayna is conscious and in good spirits. Then she goes into surgery and the procedure goes well. The doctors tell Deacon and their daughters that she’s expected to make a full recovery and be released from the hospital within a few days.
