It’s done very, very well for us.” Vachon co-founded Killer Films with Pamela Koffler in 1995 and has worked extensively with Todd Haynes, among many others. Among her productions to receive critical praise but little in the way »

The promo, while brief, sets up an intriguing question heading into the third installment of FX’s hit show: What’s so important about this air conditioner unit? The video certainly uses the AC to full effect, as the sound certainly establishes an eerie tone for what should be yet another compelling murder mystery.

‘Kong: Skull Island’ Review: It’s ‘Apocalypse Now’ With Monsters, Or At Least That’s Part of the Idea

King Kong has been an icon of cinema ever since the stop-motion gorilla stormed into the frame in 1933. With such a lofty reputation, it’s no wonder that subsequent versions of his story have struggled to get him right, fighting to reignite the potential of the franchise with mixed results. The campy 1976 vehicle faithfully resurrects the cartoonish aspects of the original in color (and proved an awkward launchpad for Jessica Lange’s career), while Peter Jackson’s fascinating 2005 effort melded old school escapism with new technology to such an extensive degree that it bled the concept dry. Just how much new escapism can you milk from one of the biggest faces in film history?

Kong: Skull Island” puts that question to the test, and the outcome falls somewhere in between those two earlier efforts. A visually striking reworking of the “Kong” premise that never sets foot in New York City, »

Benh Zeitlin May Finally Be Shooting His Follow-Up to ‘Beasts of the Southern Wild’ in the Caribbean

It’s been a question many of us in the indie world have been asking for a couple years now: Where in the world is Benh Zeitlin? The filmmaker had one of the most breakthrough years ever in 2012 when his “Beasts of the Southern Wild” exploded from Sundance winner to four-time Oscar nominee. Zeitlin even knocked out Ben Affleck (“Argo”) to earn a Best Director nomination.

‘The Shack’ Review: Octavia Spencer Is a Heavenly Presence in Manipulative Christian Drama

When self-published novel “The Shack” hit shelves back in 2007, first-time author William P. Young’s Christian drama was met with significant controversy, thanks to its inventive portrayal of the Holy Trinity as an African American woman, a young Middle-Eastern man and an Asian woman. Despite outcry from the exact kind of religious audience the book was pursuing, the book became an unexpected smash hit. Ten years later, it’s finally spawned a glossy, inevitable Hollywood adaptation – and one made palatable only because of that same off-beat trio. That’s particularly true for Octavia Spencer, who literally embodies God in the Stuart Hazeldine film.

‘Twin Peaks’: Hear Sheryl Lee Bring ‘The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer’ To Life In New Clips

Audible Studios has released three new clips from the audiobook edition of Jennifer Lynch‘s “The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer,” which was originally published in 1990 as a spin-off of David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks” television series. Sheryl Lee, who played the character in the series, returns to perform as Laura.

The three clips introduce the character of Laura Palmer at age 12, seemingly innocent enough, as she eagerly writes in the new diary she got for her birthday. However, Laura seems to have some dark secrets, as the clips hint at the psychosexual horror to come, when she writes about more adult conversations and intense visions of a demonic presence. You know, normal Lynch stuff.

“There are some things I can’t tell anyone,” Palmer confess, voiced ominously by Lee, as if speaking directly to the reader. “I promise to tell these things to you. »

‘The Americans’ Review: Season 5 Expertly Paints an Orwellian Future Through a Dystopian Past

It’s 1984. The Soviet Union and the United States have long been engaged in a heated Cold War. Each side has covert operatives looking to protect their country and hurt the opposition. Americans lie awake at night, fearing the sound of an air ride siren and the sight of a nuclear bomb going off in the distance.

But in the Ussr, they’re just trying to survive. They just want to have enough food for their families. Russians just want to eat.

And Americans are trying to stop them.

What seems like a simple new premise for Season 5 is stripped down to an even more basic state during the first three episodes of “The Americans,” as the complicated lives led by Philip (Matthew Rhys) and Elizabeth (Keri Russell) stateside are contrasted with the barren existence of their comrades in Russia. What feel like far-reaching suspicions lead to inhuman decisions, all »

The imperial family had previously ruled since 1613, and according to legend, only the daughter Anastasia survived being slain by escaping and taking on a new identity.
