New Look At Suicide Squad's Killer Croc

29 October 2015 2:00 AM, PDT

World meet the Suicide Squad, Suicide Squad meet... okay, never mind. Empire’s December issue debuts some of the most twisted, antisocial bunch of psychopaths we've ever run into - to paraphrase Ralph Meeker in The Dirty Dozen - and the squad’s ensemble of gnarly crims have now been unleashed over a series of spectacular new covers. Here are some exclusive stills from the film to fill in some gaps, including, to kick off, a closer look at the villain of a piece that’s hardly short of villainous types to chose from.Amanda Waller – played, of course, by Angela Bassett in Green Lantern and Cynthia Addai-Robinson in Arrow – is given menacing new life in Suicide Squad by double-Oscar nominee Viola Davis. Waller is, officially at least, the government apparatchik who'll be giving out the squad’s orders. Of course, it’s more complicated than that. As this exclusive on-set image hints, »

Kristen Stewart And Chloe Sevigny Circling Lizzie Borden Biopic

28 October 2015 5:14 PM, PDT

Played just this year and last in a pair of campy Christina Ricci movies for the Lifetime Channel, famous axe murderer Lizzie Borden is also heading to the cinema screen in yet another project. Belgian director Pieter Van Hees (Waste Land) will direct an as-yet-untitled psychological thriller based on Borden's sordid story, with Chloe Sevigny and Kristen Stewart both in line to star."Lizzie Borden took an axe and gave her mother 40 whacks," goes the rhyme. "When she saw what she had done, she gave her father 41."Borden was actually acquitted of the 1892 murders of her father and stepmother in Fall River, Massachusetts, but she remains the prime suspect for Bordenologists who continue to study the case. Other potential perps that have been suggested include the Bordens' live-in maid Bridget Sullivan, Lizzie's sister Emma, her illegitimate half-brother William, and her uncle John Morse. In the new film, Sevigny will take the role of Lizzie, »

Oldboy's Pom Klementieff Cast In Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

28 October 2015 1:02 PM, PDT

Writer/director James Gunn is in Atlanta preparing to start shooting the next Guardians Of The Galaxy. While we might expect to learn a lot of casting information from him via Facebook, the first piece has actually broken before he had the chance, with news that Pom Klementieff has been cast in a mystery role in Vol. 2. In true Marvel fashion, nothing has been released about the part, other than it called for an Asian actress and required a wide search and several auditions. Klementieff, usually found in French films, but who made her English-language debut messing with Josh Brolin’s mind in Spike Lee’s version of Oldboy, is now joining the Thanos man in the Guardians universe.Gunn is working further on the script and setting up to shoot the Guardians sequel in February, with main cast Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista and voice performers Vin Diesel »

Ash Vs. Evil Dead Scores A Second Season

28 October 2015 1:01 PM, PDT

As Ash himself might say, “Groovy.” Mere days before it's set to premiere in the United States and a few other countries, Evil Dead TV series Ash Vs. Evil Dead has been renewed for a second season by American cable channel Starz. It’s a big vote of confidence for the show, which has been getting plenty of buzz, not least for the fact that it brings full-power, old-school Evil Dead back to our screens. And it’ll be welcome news for Sam Raimi, Ivan Raimi, Bruce Campbell, Rob Tapert and the team who told Empire at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con that they had big plans for several seasons stewing in their brains. This also means Raimi could be getting a phone call from one of his family members thanks to fan demand that regular comedy stooge (and brother) Ted should show up…  “I heard the call loud »

Now we also know that Peter Sarsgaard is joining the film as Robert Kennedy.Jackie chronicles the four days in Kennedy’s life after the assassination of her husband, President John F. Kennedy in Dallas in 1963. She’s dealing with losing the love of her life while a nation rallies around her in a time of tragedy.Darren Aronofsky had been developing the project to star then-partner Rachel Weisz back in 2010, but it fell into limbo when they split. Portman was mooted as the new Jackie in 2012, but it has taken a few years to come together. Aronofsky remains on board as producer, with No director Pablo Larraín now calling the shots. While the cast is still not quite together and a domestic distributor remains to be found, Larrain should be starting »

Exclusive: First Look At Will Smith.s Suicide Squad Cover

28 October 2015 9:09 AM, PDT

Deadshot is the new American Sniper. Kinda. Will Smith’s troubled assassin is a marksman whose deadly aim is put into the service of Suicide Squad in David Ayer’s new comic-book movie, but a jutting-jawed patriot this guy emphatically isn’t. Here, on Empire’s fourth and final newsstand cover, is the man himself in full combat regalia and boasting enough ammo to fill even John Woo’s bullet drawer.“On Bad Boys I trained in Miami with special-ops guys, but this is a whole other level,” laughs Smith of the training process. He hints at a complex dynamic with Quinn and the Joker along the way. “Deadshot’s actually eyeballing [Harley] a little bit. There’s a pretty ragged romantic triangle there.”Deadshot, Aka Floyd Lawton, is Suicide Squad's walking arsenal. He brings the firepower to a crew that also includes Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje »

Exclusive: Margot Robbie.s Harley Quinn Makes Her Bow

28 October 2015 8:37 AM, PDT

If you thought the Watchmen were messed up, get a load of Suicide Squad. Leading off Empire's rogues gallery of new covers was Jared Leto’s wild card, not a member of the squad but still the beating heartlessness at the core of David Ayer’s comic-book adaptation, and Cara Delevingne’s Enchantress. Now comes Margot Robbie's post-transformation Harley Quinn, the third newsstand star to adorn the new Suicide Squad issue.A mischief-making case-study in how not to conduct therapy sessions, not only will she not improve the Joker’s mental equilibrium, her own psychological health will be sent spinning along the way. Along with her work attire. “When I got the role I started looking up Harley costumes online, with my mum sitting next to me,” Robbie tells Empire. “She was like, ‘My daughter is going to dress like a prostitute!' There are a lot of angry mothers out there! »

Michelle Rodriguez Starring In Tomboy, A Revenger's Tale

28 October 2015 7:09 AM, PDT

Walter Hill is tackling gender reassignment themes in his next film, albeit in the guise of an action thriller. Michelle Rodriguez and Sigourney Weaver are on board to star in Tomboy, A Revenger’s Tale. Hill has written the script based on a story by Denis Hamill, which sees a top assassin double-crossed by gangsters and handed over to a rogue surgeon (Weaver) who turns him into a woman. Now a hit woman, she heads out for some vengeance, aided by a nursed named Johnnie who also has secrets. It’ll be an interesting role for Rodriguez to tackle and a welcome leading performance give how often she’s been in ensembles recently. She’s taking over the job from Freida Pinto, who was attached a couple of months ago before the film made its initial rounds at the Toronto Film Festival’s market. Hill will start rolling the cameras next month in Vancouver. »

Exclusive New Look At Leonardo DiCaprio In The Revenant

28 October 2015 7:08 AM, PDT

If Hollywood scuttlebutt is to believed, The Revenant’s wintry shoot was an anguished time littered with the souls of the damned, where the crew members looked like Jack Torrance at the end of The Shining and even the on-set snowmen were chain-smoking. “Hellish” is a word that’s often associated with those snowbound months. But as Apocalypse Now and Fitzcarraldo prove, from even the most arduous and remote shoots can come majestic movies. Judging by all we’ve seen so far – including this beautiful, widescreen new still from the film - Alejandro González Iñárritu’s survival epic has every chance of joining them in the canon of greats.Making great art can require big sacrifices, and as Empire discovers in the new issue, Iñárritu demanded plenty of his cast and crew along the way. “It was an extremely challenging shoot,” he tells us in the warmer climes of his Santa Monica offices. »

She's also written and will star in Prevenge, a "post-feminist revenge movie" set to shoot imminently in Cardiff and London. Not much has yet been revealed about the story, other than that it revolves around a pregnant woman on a killing spree, "targeting individuals from different walks of life". Her motivation only becomes clear as the movie progresses.Herself currently seven-and-a-half months pregnant, Lowe says the film was inspired by “my real experience. People automatically assume you’re a lovely person because you’re pregnant... I wanted to write something which defied that image of the pregnant woman as this safe, sweet, kind person… I felt like motherhood is a crazy, interesting experience and it’s rarely seen on screen. Pregnancy could be a very alien, existential »

Exclusive: Jared Leto Talks Suicide Squad.s The Joker

27 October 2015 10:15 AM, PDT

Glimpsed on Instagram, teaser in the trailer and much discussed online, Suicide Squad's Joker has remained tantalising unknowable - up to now. The new issue of Empire pokes through the bars of Arkham Asylum and lays bare the nuts and bolts of Jared Leto’s wild-eyed reimagining of DC’s supervillain. Nuts, of course, being the operative word for this character. "There was definitely a period of… detachment,” the actor tells us of his immersion in Suicide Squad’s wild-eyed outsider. "I took a pretty deep dive. But this was a unique opportunity and I couldn't imagine doing it another way. It was fun, playing those psychological games.” When quizzed on exactly how arduous that process was, Leto unleashes an allusion you’re unlikely to hear from, say, Tom Hanks anytime soon. “It was painful, like giving birth out of my prick-hole.” Ouch. The role of the Joker in David Ayer’s vivid, »

Exclusive: Cara Delevingne Talks Suicide Squad

27 October 2015 9:34 AM, PDT

Of all the characters in Suicide Squad, the one most shrouded in mystery is Enchantress. We know she's played by Cara Delevingne. We know she's immensely powerful. But we've not had a proper look at her in all her unearthly glory — until now. One of the covers for the new issue of Empire features the grungy but alluring entity known in some vintage comic-book issues as "The Switcheroo Witcheroo".  And inside is an exclusive interview with Delevingne, who spoke to us on-set while clad in her elaborate costume. "She's an ancient sorceress," says the star. "A feral being. She's been trapped for so long and now she's finally let out." The hapless human whom Enchantress takes over is June Moone, who finds more than she bargained for while exploring a creepy cave. "June is an adventure-seeker who's always wanted some excitement. And she gets what she wished for, in a terrible way. »
