Will a Judge's Ruling Against CNN Make It Easier to Sue the Media?

Donald Trump probably doesn't know about it, but the guy who once said he wanted to open up libel laws will probably be quite pleased by a new ruling from a Georgia federal judge. In fact, the stakes in this case are so high we wouldn't be surprised if it eventually lands before the U.S. Supreme Court and potentially makes it easier to sue entertainment and media outlets. There's a reason why the Motion Picture Association of America submitted an amicus brief in this case.

The lawsuit is Davide Carbone v. Cable News Network.

David Letterman's Worldwide Pants Incorporated has beaten contract claims from Worldwide Subsidy Group, an entity that was retained in 2002 to collect royalties from secondary transmissions on cable and satellite television.

Worldwide Subsidy Group was founded by Raul Galaz, a former entertainment lawyer, and his company's agreement with Letterman's allowed for royalty collection in exchange for 20 percent of the pot.

But in 2002, less than two months after the agreement was signed, Galaz was convicted of mail fraud in connection with royalty collection. He served more than a year in prison. Letterman's company says the agreement was thereafter terminated.

Critic's Notebook: Trump's Press Conference Echoes Death Throes of Watergate

On Thursday, President Donald Trump's press conference to announce Alexander Acosta as his new nominee for labor secretary turned into an extended psychodrama, the likes of which we haven’t seen since Richard Nixon during the death throes of Watergate.

It’s frowned upon for members of the psychiatric profession to deliver armchair analysis of public figures, but Trump is not making that temptation easy to avoid. During his rantings and ravings, you expected white-uniformed figures to burst in with a straitjacket and a rubber net.

After spending the briefest amount of time extolling the virtues of his new nominee — we »

Hollywood Flashback: In 1980, Bob Costas Was the (Baby) Face of NBC Sports

<!--[Cdata[

Bob Costas, who announced Feb. 9 that he'll no longer anchor the Olympics in primetime after 24 years, was the original baby-faced broadcaster when he first signed with NBC in 1980 at age 28.

"You look like you're 14," Don Ohlmeyer, who then headed the network's sports division, told him. "How much older would you look if you grew a beard?" When Costas replied that a beard would make him look five years older, "Don perked up," recalls Costas. "Then I said, 'Because that's how long it would take me to grow it.' And that ended the beard idea."

Even Trump Voters Oppose Defunding PBS

As uncertainty looms over how the Trump administration will handle federal funding for public broadcasting, a new survey shows that Americans overwhelmingly want PBS to stay untouched.

Per the joint study by Republican pollsters American Viewpoint and Democratic Hart Research Associates, 73 percent of the U.S. voting public oppose the elimination of federal funds for PBS. The poll, conducted on behalf of public television, found that while left-leaning voters are more unanimous in their protection of PBS, a decisive majority of Gop voters feel the same way. Eighty-three percent of Democrats oppose defunding, while 62 percent of Republicans do.

Jeff Zucker Cautions Journalists About "Authoritarian Regime" Targeting CNN en Espanol

CNN worldwide president Jeff Zucker opened his remarks at Turner's press lunch by urging the journalists in the room to take a brief hiatus from the flurry of White House news.

He asked those gathered to take note that CNN en Espanol was taken off the air by the Venezuelan government after it reported that Venezuela was selling visas, possibly to terrorists, and that the scheme went all the way to the vice president's office.

"Everyone in this room should be concerned about this," said Zucker. "That's what happens when an authoritarian regime [targets] a network because they don't like »

TV Ratings: Little Optimism for CBS' 'Doubt'

CBS midseason drama Doubt did not get off on strong footing on Wednesday. Even by the more forgiving standards of the current TV-viewing climate, its night of draw was a disappointment.

At 10 p.m., Doubt averaged a 0.8 rating among adults 18-49 (the lowest demo score of a Big Four show on the night) and 5.3 million viewers. It's the second TV effort from Katherine Heigl in recent years, following on the heels of NBC drama State of Affairs.

ABC led the night, despite Modern Family hovering at a season low 2.0 rating among adults 18-49. The rest of the »
