Newswire: E! is making Jawbreaker into a TV series

6 hours ago | avclub.com | See recent The AV Club news »

Although it never reached the satirical heights of Heathers, or the mainstream popularity of Mean Girls, Darren Stein’s high school black comedy Jawbreaker has earned cult status in recent years, courtesy of some delightfully over-the-top queen bee performances from Rose McGowan and Judy Greer. Now, E! has announced that it’s making a TV version of the 1999 film, with Stein set to co-write and executive produce.

The original movie starred McGowan as an icy high school mastermind fighting to hide her accidental murder of her loved and hated best frenemy. The new series will apparently update that premise, centering on “a new clique whose world is rocked by an accidental killing at a bachelorette party.” We can presumably still expect the same escalating series of blackmailings, threats, and withering high school put-downs, though.

Stein’s recent projects include the gay film festival hit G.B.F.; he’s ...

"Sons of Anarchy" Spinoff "Mayans MC" Adds Edward James Olmos

FX and Kurt Sutter’s upcoming drama pilot Mayans MC, a Latino-centric spinoff set within the Sons of Anarchy universe, has located its first star: Edward James Olmos.

Per Deadline, James Olmos has come on board to play the part of Felipe Reyes, a former Mexican patriarch who is now a shadow of his former self. Aiming to keep his life – and more importantly, his son – on the straight and narrow, Mayans MC will chronicle Reyes’ day-to-day struggles as he tries to stay on the right side of the law. And if the core SOA saga is any indication, such an endeavor will be much more difficult than it seems.

Co-created by Sutter and writing partner Elgin James (Little Birds), Mayans MC will largely revolve around Ez Reyes, a young prospect of the Mayan Motorcycle Club, based on the border between California and Mexico. Plotting vengeance against the cartel, FX »

‘Outlander’ Season 3 to Premiere in September, Production Moves to South Africa

15 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

It’s been a long wait for “Outlander” fans, but there is light at the end of this particular tunnel: Season 3 will premiere in September 2017, Starz says.

That’ll make a gap (the “Droughtlander”) of about 14 months between Seasons 2 and 3. Season 3 began production in September 2016 and will finish in June — and is moving from misty, rugged Scotland to the slightly sunnier Cape Town, South Africa. Stars Caitriona Balfe and Sam Heughan taped a message to mark the occasion and thank their Scottish crew:

The story in Season 3 picks up right after Claire (Balfe) travels through the stones to return to her life in 1948. Now pregnant with Jamie’s (Heughan) child, she struggles with the fallout of her sudden reappearance and its effect on her marriage to her first husband, Frank (Tobias Menzies). Meanwhile, in the 18th century, Jamie suffers from the aftermath of his doomed last stand at the historic battle of Culloden, as »

TV Ratings: ‘This Is Us’ Enters Home Stretch, Stephen Colbert Wins Over Jimmy Fallon Again

15 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

This Is Us” stumbled just a bit as it entered its home stretch Tuesday night, but its Valentine’s Day performance was still enough to make it a big bright spot for NBC, coming in with a 2.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and 8.97 million viewers with just two more new episodes left in the season. “The Wall” led into “This Is Us” with a solid 1.4 in the demo and 5.73 million viewers. “Chicago Fire” pulled in a steady 1.5 and 6.71 million viewers.

Over on CBS, which (as usual) dunked on everyone else in terms of total viewers, “NCIS” drew a solid 1.8 in the demo and 15.05 million total viewers. “Bull” weighed in with a 1.3 and 10.57 million viewers. “NCIS: New Orleans” notched a 1.2 and 10.22 million viewers.

One interesting note: If you look at the number of 18-34 viewers as a percentage of the “NCIS” audience, that percentage is lower than many other shows on the night. But »

‘Feud’: Inside Jessica Lange, Susan Sarandon’s Take on a Hollywood Battle Royale

14 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

Dressed in a black ensemble topped by a long brown coat, Ryan Murphy darts back and forth between two rooms in the chilly Santa Monica Civic Auditorium. On this January day, a cramped space in this deliciously retro complex houses the monitors for Murphy as he directs an episode of his new FX series “Feud: Bette and Joan” that is set at the 1963 Academy Awards.

It’s a pivotal moment in the famous rivalry between legendary actresses Bette Davis and Joan Crawford. Having co-starred in “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” both women wanted the career boost of appearing on the Oscar podium. While it’s tough to spoil an event that happened more than five decades ago, let’s just say it was, to quote Davis, a “bumpy night.”

Feud” — which debuts March 5 — mines that decades-old conflict to tell a modern and highly relevant story about Hollywood, sexism, and survival.

‘American Horror Story’: Ryan Murphy Reveals Season 7 Will Tackle 2016 Presidential Election

2 hours ago | Variety - TV News | See recent Variety - TV News news »

And the theme of “American Horror Story” Season 7 is… politics?

The show’s producer, Ryan Murphy, revealed on Wednesday night that the next installment of FX’s horror anthology will zero in on the 2016 presidential election. During an appearance on Andy Cohen’s “Watch What Happens Live,” Murphy said that he’s pulling inspiration from the Nov. 8 election that saw now-President Donald Trump pull off a surprise victory over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton.

“Well, I don’t have a title, but the season we begin shooting in June is going to be about the election that we just went through,” Murphy said. “So I think that will be interesting for a lot of people.”

Will there be a character based on Trump? When asked the question by Cohen, Murphy played it coy, telling him, “maybe.”

It’s already been confirmed that “Ahs” veterans Sarah Paulson and Evan Peters will be returning for the next season, which »

‘Legion’: Noah Hawley’s ‘Romance of the Mind’ Might Be Hiding a Heart of Darkness

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Legion” Season 1, “Chapter 2.”]

Apocalypse Now

Maybe the wild premiere left me Fubar, but the opening of “Legion’s” second episode gave off major “Apocalypse Now” vibes. David’s ominous, deadened voiceover recalled Martin Sheen’s war-torn work in Francis Ford Coppola’s classic. The song — “Road to Nowhere” by the Talking Heads — served as a modern stand-in for The Doors’ “The End,” which would be far too on-the-nose (and overused) to be repurposed yet again, but the notes guided a slow, seemingly peaceful riverboat ride; an iconic wartime image, countlessly repurposed in many an action film, but never so effectively alluding to the horrors hidden on each riverbed as in the Oscar-winning 1979 film.

After an absolutely bonkers series premiere that we’re still trying to make sense of, Legion slows down in Episode 2 and goes inward, deep into the twisted psyche of gifted mutant David Haller.

They arrive safely at Summerland, a gorgeous architectural marvel of a mutant retreat run by Dr. Melanie Bird. I really admire this week’s Arrow. “Spectre of the Gun” is unlike any other episode we’ve seen from the show this season, as it tackles the very topical and highly debated issue of gun control, and it does so in a respectful way, allowing both sides of the debate to share their views and arguments for why the buying and selling of firearms should be more or less restricted. However, while Arrow executive producer Marc Guggenheim does an admirable and respectful job of showcasing the current political climate and the conflicting viewpoints on gun control, he does an incredibly poor job of
